the affordable housing communitys strongest allies, announced he was introducing legislation that would create a Housing Investment Fund and called on the state to invest $500 million annually in affordable housing. The Housing Investment Fund, seeded with the Mortgage Insurance Funds excess reserves and resources from the federal Trust Fund, would provide dedicated funding for affordable housing development and preservation. The Housing Investment Fund would also allow developers to leverage public and private resources that will result in housing that is truly affordable. Because the Housing Investment Fund would be designed locally, it would represent the most flexible funds jurisdictions have available to address their affordable housing needs. Deb Howard, Executive Director of the Pratt Area Community Council and ANHD Board Member, spoke on behalf of ANHD and our 98 members. Deb thanked Assemblyman Lopez for his leadership on affordable housing and for recognizing that it was time for New York to join the 43 other states that have created an affordable housing trust fund. One of the principle messages heard from advocates and elected officials alike is that affordable housing development is an effective economic development tool. n August 19, housing advocates from across the state joined Assemblyman Vito Lopez and several other elected officials on the steps of City Hall to demand more resources for affordable housing. ANHD was represented well as over a dozen member groups participated including Brooklyn Congregations United for Action, Cooper Square Committee, Fifth Avenue Committee, Flatbush Development Corporation, Good Old Lower East Side, Make the Road New York, Mirabal Sisters, NHS, Northern Manhattan Improvement Corp, Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, Pratt Area Community Council, Queens Community House, Indeed, with a state budget deficit exceeding $2 billion, an unemployment rate of 8.7%, and well over 25,000 reported foreclosures since January, it seems rational to invest public resources in programs that create jobs, revitalize neighborhoods, generate tax revenues, and create decent, safe and affordable homes. Another common message was that this rally is only the beginning and that advocates from across the state will continue to work together and with Assemblyman Lopez to ensure that sufficient funding is allotted for affordable housing so that every New Yorkers has an affordable place to call home.
