formal academic instruction.

The apprentices were identified and

selected through a rigorous, multifaceted
process that began this past May and
ended in July. All of the apprentices
demonstratedthrough both their work and
actionsleadership and/ or an interest in
doing community organizing work. Each
apprentice is supported by a minimum
stipend of $22,800, health insurance, and
academic certification or accreditation
through Empire State College (SUNY) for
the work and studies completed.
There is at least one apprentice from each
of New York Citys five boroughs and
collectively they represent the rich diversity
and complexity of the city as well as the
promise of a vibrant future.
A similar, parallel process was used to
identify and recruit the 10 host
organizations where the apprentices will
work. The host organizations are all well-
established, well-known community-based
organizations with outstanding track
records of improving the economic and
housing security of low-income and
immigrant households.
In addition to being the Centers first
apprenticeship class, these apprentices are
also the first group of emerging community
organizers to be part of the Public Allies
program. Funded by AmeriCorps, Public
Allies is recognizing -- for the first time
he Center for Neighborhood
Leadership, founded last year by
the Association for Neighborhood
and Housing Development (ANHD)
and the New York Immigration
Coalition (NYIC) launched its first cycle
of comprehensive training for new
community organizers on September
8, 2009. The 10-memberclass of
apprentices has been placed in
organizing positions with ANHD and
NYIC member organizations
throughout the city. Over the next 10
months, the Centers Apprenticeship
Program will help these emerging
leaders develop skills and knowledge
that will enable them to effectively
serve their communities. In addition to
their hands-on training, the apprentices
will receive personalized mentoring,
coaching, peer-to0peer learning and
community organizing as making a
unique and distinctive contribution to
furthering its mission of leadership
development, community engagement
and civic participation. the Center is
incredibly excited about this
groundbreaking partnership and future
collaboration with Public Allies to
promote our shared goals.

The Center aims to establish a permanent infrastructure in New York
City that will promote community organizing and leadership
development, and foster the identification, recruitment and training
of new organizers and leaders. It will also offer career development
support to the organizers and their respective organizations.
The Center has three major components: the Mid-Career Seminar
for more experienced organizers, the Strategic Assistance Unit for
short-term technical assistance to individuals and organizations, and
the Apprenticeship. In combination, the three components will result
in increased recruitment and retention of well-trained, highly
competent community organizers and leaders to the benefit of
neighborhoods across the city.
For more information about the Center for Neighborhood Leadership
or the Apprenticeship, contact Hector Sector, Director, at (212) 747-
