All of the apprentices demonstratedthrough both their work and actionsleadership and/ or an interest in doing community organizing work. There is at least one apprentice from each of New York Citys five boroughs and collectively they represent the rich diversity and complexity of the city as well as the promise of a vibrant future. A similar, parallel process was used to identify and recruit the 10 host organizations where the apprentices will work. The host organizations are all well- established, well-known community-based organizations with outstanding track records of improving the economic and housing security of low-income and immigrant households. In addition to being the Centers first apprenticeship class, these apprentices are also the first group of emerging community organizers to be part of the Public Allies program. Funded by AmeriCorps, Public Allies is recognizing -- for the first time he Center for Neighborhood Leadership, founded last year by the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development (ANHD) and the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) launched its first cycle of comprehensive training for new community organizers on September 8, 2009.
