Robin Lane Fox writes:

Every keen gardener knows that Crg Farm Plants is utterly special. Many would say that the range here is the outstanding nursery collection of its kind in Britain.

Dan Hinkley writes:

My frequent travelling companions Bleddyn and Sue Wynn Jones .. are unparalleled in regards to an astute eye and near maniacal approach to plant exploration,

James Alexander-Sinclair writes:

a dream nursery at the foot of Mount Snowdon.Their list contains mouthwatering stuff and their packaging is a work of art in itself

Roy Lancaster writes:

With limited time it is impossible to do justice to the many riches at Crg Farm and I left reluctantly, with one thought in my head; if heaven is like this, heres hoping

We are pleased to report that the nursery is going from strength to strength. Partly due to a more flexible approach to access and a conscientious workforce, many thanks to all concerned. Without forgetting all the support from our loyal customers. Dont forget we accept appointments all year round to collect containerised plants or select open ground plants for lifting at a convenient time. Our sales area will not be open over the winter months, but the plants are accessible to our staff. Approaching the end of our 20th season may mean that we will be coming of age in 2011. Sue at least has risen to the challenge and has singed up to exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Fingers crossed. Luckily for me Im banned from helping them, which must also mean I have come of age as a grumpy old man. At last we made it back into the collecting fields of Asia this autumn, having finally shaken off the gangsters that masquerade under the respectability of banking. More interesting woodies to look forward to in the coming years as well as a good sprinkling of climbers and herbaceous. Great country to collect in, Korea is so buoyant, its a pity that our American colleagues did not feel safe enough there to join us. Sue and I had a great time for one of the weeks exploring the islands off the south coast. Lots of thanks to Kihun Song for helping us, saved us a bomb on transport. As always all the details of our opening hours are on the back cover of this list as well as a list of our events. For those of our customers who are unable to visit the nursery we are offering an online shopping experience, with deliveries throughout the UK and Europe, from www.mailorder.crug-farm.co.uk. Where there are search facilities by many criteria (i.e. colour), as well as by plant name, while indicating availability, pot sizes and prices. Our carrier, City Link offer an overnight fragile service, which should have your plants delivered in fresh condition before 5.30pm the following day to dispatch (UK).We have specially made boxes in 3 sizes giving us the option of dispatching plants from 30cm (1ft) to 295cm (10ft) tall. Our carriage charges are by the box, (volume not weight) hence please consider ordering enough plants to fill a box, rather than one plant as the carriage charge would be the same. There is no minimum charge for the plants purchased. For additional queries on plant availability etc contact Sue at mailorder@crug-farm.co.uk. We try our best to reply to any queries, a brief e-mail can be the surest way of a prompt reply. For any other information visit our nursery website via www.crugfarm.co.uk where there is additional information on our events, accommodation and some seasonal plantings.

Please note the lay-out of the following list avoiding repetition of collected plants, (etc signifying more collections available) the full list and descriptions are on our mailorder web-site where space is unlimited. Here there are not only descriptions of all of our plants, but photographs of most as well, this information is also accessible on the computer in our sales-area. We should forewarn our customers that as the season progresses many of our lines will be out of stock. Conversely new lines highlighted bold on this list, will be offered from January 1st on as they become available. Please note that some of the plants are ordinarily only available bare rooted, : indicating those plants. Collectors References These combination of initials and numbers are accession numbers that are assigned to collections we and others gather from wild populations from all over the world. These are assigned to each collection as they are made to enable interested parties to track their origins. Some notes on our 2011 introductions :Woodies including some climbers primarily from our own wild seed collections Acer is always a good place to start, A. albopurpurascens CWJ12361 is a collection from our last encounter with this species, from Dasyueshan Forest western Taiwan in 2007. Bearing slender simple evergreen leaves with long tail-like tips and seed held in widely parted pairs. Our other additions are re-identifications, A. campbellii ssp. campbellii was A. campbellii v. serratifolium, while A. pectinatum ssp. pectinatum was A. campbellii v. fansipanense. Our thanks to Peter Gregory for his sterling work in identifying our stock of maples. Actinidia tetramera v. maloides will go down a bundle as a replacement name for A. pilusola, the wonderfully colourful species which unfortunately entered commerce with the wrong name. Ever since we collected Alnus pendula in Japan our appreciation of this genus has been aroused. Add the influence of Hugh McAllister sweet-talking us around the gardens at Ness and of course there are some must have species amongst both Alnus and Betula which we have grown from their seed. A. maximowiczii was a must as this AM form originated from a collection gathered by the late Kenneth Ashburner from the island of Ullngd off the eastern coast of Korea. Described as a large shrub with heart-shaped ribbed leaves bearing yellow-maroon catkins resulting in handsome cones by the winter. Meanwhile A. sieboldiana originates from across the Sea of Japan, with a similar shrub-like habit bearing broader more conspicuously ribbed leaves and larger cones, while being totally drought tolerant. Betula alleghaniensis originates from north America forming a small tree with attractive light brown bark with a silvery metallic sheen which peels into thin strips, with the added bonus of good autumnal colour to the foliage. While B. insignis BSWJ11751 was re-identified by Hugh, these trees have gray exfoliating bark and ovate papery leaves with upright reddish cylindrical catkins. Clematis viorna is a curious small sub-shrubby species originating from the eastern side of the USA, with pendant violet-purple urn-shaped flowers. Cotoneaster moupinensis may be well know to some more experienced gardeners, all the same my collection BWJ8167 from Baoxing in China has been very appealing in our woodland garden. Our inventory of Euonymus is growing steadily E. alatus f. subtriflorus BSWJ11051 is of note in not bearing the winged branches normally associated with the spindle tree. While E. europaeus from Slovakia was an outstanding fruiting selection from Ness. E. oxyphyllus is steadily becoming better known and appreciated for its rounded red fruit, conversely E. sachalinensis is scarcely known. BSWJ10835 was distinct in its shortly winged fruit on long slender stalks as we collected them in northern Japan. Fuchsia nigricans BSWJ10664 and F. petiolaris BSWJ10675 are both collections from the high mountains of Colombia where we photographed the tiny humming birds feeding

31

from their pendant red flowers. Only relatively few additions to the Hydrangea inventory this year with H. chinensis from Sichuan BWJ8000 being a short chunky form with yellowish inflorescences. Also H. involucrata BSWJ4790 was a charmer that we happened upon on our way to visit a friend in Chiba, Japan. No fluke involved with H. indochinensis f. purpurascens KWJ12233b. These were collected in a determined attempt to introduce this colourful form into cultivation, which has the undersides of the leaves decorated in different hues of red-purple. The same area of northern Vietnam is rich in Illicium and Magnolia. This is where I. aff. griffithii WWJ11911 formed a large evergreen shrub with polished leaves on red-pink petioles, while the star-like (hence the name star anise) seed-heads were conspicuously large a consequence of the papery many petalled flowers. We are also adding additional collections of the superb evergreen trees M. floribunda v. tonkinensis and M. foveolata, which I suspect I extolled the virtues of last year. We should also have some spiny Oplopanax japonica by early in the year, another exceptionally hardy cool-growing species, that has never before been offered. For somewhere warmer Pentapanax castanopsisicola CWJ12411, this time a hemi-epiphyte from Taiwan, the species I had been chasing for years, initially assuming it to be an aerial rooting climber. Still not able to come to terms that it is now considered to be a non spiny woody Aralia. Before we leave Taiwan Polyspora axialis CWJ12363 was in full flow November-December 2007.What the Camellia-like flowers lacked in size (in comparison to our other species) they certainly made up with numbers.A great way to make oneself unpopular is to launch too few of a plant that everyone will crave. Such is the case with Rhodoleia aff. henryi BSWJ11782, which initially we had hundreds of, but unfortunately most of them damped off as tiny seedlings, hence our return to Vietnam is long overdue. Sarcococca coriacea HWJK2428 will require a warm preferably frost-free site. It possesses the largest leaves that we have seen in the genus borne on stems to 3m tall. Schefflera multinervia BSWJ11727 formed a small tree where we collected this seed, from a large inflorescence above the exotic large bi-whirled foliage. Schisandra were stunning in fruit this autumn, not neglecting the colourful flowers such as those we expect on our new hybrid S. rubriflora x incarnata.Which will incorporate the bright rose-pink of S. incarnata with the red of S. rubriflora. Sorbus caloneura GUIZ80 were given to us as seedlings by Ness gardens some time back. Long enough for them to have formed small trees with red flushed emerging ribbed leaves a fresh green by late spring, providing the perfect foil for the large dome-topped cymes of white flowers, which later mature into marble sized speckled fruit. S. carmesina B&L12545 came at the same time, when it was still considered to be S. huphensis, which it differs from in bearing its crimson fading to pink fruit dependently annually. One reason why Ness regard it to be one of the most beautiful as well as a drought tolerant species. S. aff. cashmiriana Berger 7512 is written up in Hughs book

32

SORBUS, where it is compared to the species and S. gilgitana. It is another species with white ovoid fruit, but is more amenable to cultivation, due to its readiness to fruit at a young age, consistently heavy fruiting while frugal on space. S. rosea SEP492 was a stunning site at Ness both this and last autumn. Named for its pink flowers and fruit, it is one of the most impressive of its group in the gardens. For rarity S. discolores sect. KR5585 will be difficult to beat, a white fruiting tree with an attractive weeping habit originating from the Showa valley Tibet, collected by Keith Rushforth. Always leave the best till last, S. vestita, the Himalayan whitebeam is yet again grown from Ness seed. From their best form, with large parchment textured leaves silver on the undersides contrasting well with the warm russet fruit. The tender climber Thunbergia laurifolia BSWJ7166 managed to make itself at home in our stock tunnel, where it performs annually with long pendant racemes of its exotic yellow flowers encased in large orange bracts. The Flora Of China states that there is only one species of the little known Tripterygium, yet here we are offering our fourth. Do we loose faith in that publication or carry on? Admittedly there is not a huge difference in the second recognised Japanese species, T. doianum, mostly in the foliage being a different shape and smaller as well as the glabrous inflorescence. Viburnum brachyandrum BSWJ5784 is easily distinguishable from the rest of its clade within the genus. It fruits and flowers as well as its exuberant brethren, but in a somewhat more refined fashion, on slender reddened branches. V aff. clavum WWJ12012 is a best guess with the available . information to date (Viburnum still not compiled for FOC). The plants I collected seed from were only around 1m tall evergreen conspicuously veined with glaucous fruit contrasting with their red . . stalks. Both V aff. foetens (Dcne) GWJ9227 and V aff. griffithianum GWJ9388 are identifications from my copies of Flora of British India by Joseph Hooker (7 vol.), as we are unable to find them in any modern literature. I have also had to rake back to . another relic tome for the identification of V aff. kansuense BWJ7737, a very pretty small palmate-leafed species I collected in China in 2000. V aff. lautum BSWJ10290 was previously listed as . . sp. from Mexico, while V aff. tinoides BSWJ10612 is an evergreen species from our Colombian collections. It had been hiding amongst the vast number of viburnums we have amassed, for no other reason that they are too good not to cultivate once we find them. V. luzonicum v. formosana BSWJ3585 is a re-identification not to be confused with V formosanum when we introduce it. The . . similarly named Filipino V luzonicum v. sinuatum BSWJ4009 fooled us for years, as its foliage was tiny (while juvenile), indicating another species that you will find next inline in this ranting. At long last we do have a decent stock of the afore mentioned small leafed . V parvifolium BSWJ6768, which claims to be the smallest foliage in the genus. This is not its only charm, as these are hidden midsummer by the sheer bulk of flowers, on the high mountains of Taiwan this is followed by corresponding fruiting. While still on

33

Taiwan V propinquum CWJ12426 requires a proclamatory . mention. Partly due to its geographical location, one can only presume is the resulting superior form of this collection, with more orbicular stiff foliage and superb blue fruit on those contrasting red . stalks. Meanwhile the fruit on our Japanese collections of V phlebotrichum BSWJ11058 resembled cherries hanging below the leaves on long slender stalks. Too many to choose from I can already hear.At least that will not be a problem for this season with V sambucinum v. tomentosum HWJ733, as we have already sold . out. We had to use our stock to supplement the high demand for the species, which we introduced last season. Oh I almost forgot, its bigger and better.

More notes on our 2011 introductions :Herbaceous to tuberous including a few ferns Aconitum sennanense v. incisum BSWJ11032 was growing as a relatively short upright species to 1m, with a terminal inflorescence of bright blue helmets, when we found it on a steep hillside amongst a vast colony of Iris japonica under tall conifers. It so happened that Adenophora maximowicziana BSWJ11008 was collected just a bit further north in Gifu western Japan in part shade. A most unusual looking wiry species with a mass of small slender palest blue pendant flowers in succession for months. A. aff. trachelioides BSWJ8614 is at the other end of the spectrum being relatively robust growing, forming a compact slowly expanding clump of stems to 90cm tall. With heart-shaped leaves and by mid-summer bearing broad pale blue bell-flowers on long slender side branches. A. verticilliata BSWJ8608 is a distinct species bearing tiered leaves in whorls of 3-6 up the slender stems to 1.5m tall. Terminating in a large diffuse inflorescence, of distinct blue flowers from May to November. Back to Japan for another endemic, Ainsliaea uniflora BSWJ11336 a definite woodlander, forming a basal rosette of deeply lobed palmate leaves with tall slender wands of pendant purple protruding ray flowers encased in scaly bracts. Anisodus carniolicoides BWJ7501 is more intriguing than beautiful forming a stout clump of lax stems with a steady supply of the large flared bell-shaped flowers typical of the potato family. Intriguing is also a fair description of our new Asarum, A. cardiophyllum BSWJ11742 and A. aff. caudigerum BSWJ12164 are both collected from limestone areas of northern Vietnam. With dark green glossy leaves and purple-brown flowers, the first mentioned possessing long spidery tips to the flowers. Similar in that spidery aspect is the deciduous form of A. caudatum from North America. A. magnificum also joins our long list with silvered leaves and a bi-coloured flowers. More intrigue with Aspidistra aff. daibuensis 'Tidy Trim' BSWJ6866 a small form of this Taiwanese species we found in 1999 in the south of Hualien County. Of the same species A. 'Totally Dotty' BSWJ3236 was from further into the mountains in 1996. Both cultivars will be formally described at the end of this text. Begonia ferruginea BSWJ10479 meanwhile is a charming white flowering species which had formed a large colony in dense moist shade on the high Cordillera de Talamanca in Costa Rica. Cestrum roseum BSWJ10255 has been offered before, but with the incorrect name, this is a fine red flowering species from Mexico, which we are still trialing for hardiness. Amongst our many members of Convallariaceae is a new batch of Japanese Clintonia udensis with its broad foliage. Followed by Disporum cantoniense v. y-tiense HWJ104 a recently named variety we discovered in northern Vietnam, distinct for the length of its dark red flowers. Maianthemum bifolium ssp. kamtschaticum v. minimum is a very long name for a tiny plant, which supposedly originates from Yakushima, Japan, but the only place we have seen it was back on the mainland on Kyushu. M. flexuosum v. erubescens BSWJ10403 is a reddish flowering variety of this Central American robust species. We find most of these grow far better in well drained

51

evergreen shade. Continuing with the same family Ophiopogon aff. caulescens BSWJ11287 was a collection from Java with large fruit whereas O. intermedius BSWJ8244 is additional sturdy collection from northern Vietnam with pale purple flowers. Peliosanthes teta v. humilis RWJ10044 is an additional low growing collection from Taiwan, with parchment-like corrugated foliage. While Peliosanthes caesia BSWJ5183 is one of our recently named discoveries, with quite different inflorescences of pale blue flowers, this time from northern Thailand. Never pleasant having to eat ones words, but on identifying Polygonatum cyrtonema from mainland China within a long grown stock that has finally reached flowering size, I have to accept that the species from Taiwan is re-classified as P arisanensis. . Another re-classification from Taiwan is Tricyrtis ravenii BSWJ3229 an identity that we have been struggling with for years, that has again only recently been described. Heloniopsis leucantha is yet another new name to cultivation, this genus seems to be a difficult one to obtain any reliable information for classification. However I have finally acquired a copy of a paper published in 2004 which confirms that the above name covers the species which has long been cultivated in the UK as H. kawanoi. Hence H. kawanoi BSWJ11148 is quite different to what has been cultivated under this name. This is the smallest species we have grown, with a distinct flowering period, from autumn through winter on a short scape, the flowers distinguishable from all other species by the tepals being longer than the stamen. Eryngium longirameum BSWJ10351 joins the ranks of our Central American species, this small species with blue flowers was actually growing in swampy conditions when we found it with Andrea Jones who accompanied for her photographic skills. Melanoselinum decipiens may well be another umbellifer, but I suspect it will resent the wet, originating from Maderan slopes. Filipendula yezoensis BSWJ10828 is a recently identified collection for us, gathered in the north of Honshu in 2005 and displaying its broad white inflorescences for the first time last year. Hedychium villosum v. tenuiflorum KWJ12305 was easily distinguishable as it flowers for months, a diminutive evergreen species where we collected the abundant seed in northern Vietnam. Another ginger we are adding is Roscoea purpurea 'Brown Peacock' well known for its bronzy foliage. Eomecon chionantha is back on the menu after a long absence, but be careful as it can spread. We have been offering Hylomecon erectum for a number of years, yet reluctant to list it as the name is considered to be a synonym of H. japonica. Whatever we are growing differs from this in its larger longer lasting flowers. Impatiens 'Emei Dawn' DJHC98415 may not sound familiar, but is one and the same as the species from China introduced under this accession number last year. The same could be said for I. omeiana 'Ice Storm', which has finally achieved respectability after making do with silver leafed for so long. I. namchabarwensis is new to us, given to us as a gift, one that we will surely be grateful for. It is another hardy low-growing species, but with blue flowers. Isodon longitubus BSWJ11027 is mention again merle in consequence to a name change from Plectranthus. Phlomis atropurpurea BWJ7922 though is a welcomed return, after our failing to keep up with demand, we finally have some good stock. Manfreda variegata BSWJ10234 has

52

recently been transferred to the Agavaceae family, in fact the RHS Plant Finder lists it as an Agave. Maybe I should not comment on such changes as I have such little experience with this family, but I find the two genera difficult to marry. Mitella acerina BSWJ11029 and M. furusei v. subramosa BSWJ11097 are two more Japanese species well worth cultivating in a woodland garden. The first mentioned with larger foliage than any other we cultivate. Has anyone taken a good close look at the flowers of these? Intriguing as opposed to impressive. Sedum beauverdii ssp. sapaensis HWJ824 is a prostrate growing species with linnear leaves which turns out to be a new variety, yet another of our discoveries only recently described to science. We have grown Serratula coronata v. insularis BSWJ8698 for some time as our accession number indicates. We find it to be a good garden plant flowering for a long time, but unfortunately for us, does not produce vast quantities of seed every year. Thalictrum aquilegiifolium v. intermedium BSWJ10965 is a second collection of this dramatic species. This variety possessing only minor differences to the casual observer, such as being shorter than the lofty 2m of its partner. Tigridia immaculata BSWJ10393 is quite different from our previous collection of this genus, this time from Guatemala. Where it grew at a lofty altitude near the summit of Volcn Zunil, where it only formed small plants. For us it flowers from mid-summer at only 15cm tall the orange-red flared flowers being pendant on wiry peduncles. The first of the ferns we are introducing this season is Araiostegia pulchra HWJ1007 from Vietnam, with even finer divided frond than any we grow. Davallia mariesii BSWJ4448 from an older collection in Korea has a similar habit, but much shorter. Sphenomeris chinensis BSWJ6108 is a collection from Yakushima, that I have to admit I am not able to differentiate from Araiostegia parvipinnata, which according to all the floras does not grow there. We have grown Osmunda asiatica for many years to build up sufficient stocks to introduce this new species into cultivation, were it not for the tall spore-bearing fronds I would find it difficult to identify.

53

New cultivar names we are allocating Aspidistra daibuensi 'Totally Dotty' BSWJ3236 A distinct form of this species, which we have grown for many years, originating from a single plant we selected from the forest overlooking the South Cross Highway, southern Taiwan, which was still only a track at that time in 1996. This form was distinct amongst the colony we found by the broad oblong-lanceolate leaves being more heavily spotted and streaked in white than any others, to 1 m tall. This species grows quite happily for us in well drained dark shade out of doors sheltered from freezing winds. Avoid sodden soil/composts. Aspidistra aff. daibuensis 'Tidy Trim' BSWJ6866 A smaller form of this Taiwanese species we found in 1999 in the south of Hualien County, where it grew on the edge of the path. Under these conditions the leaves were only 10cm long while the habit was tight, forming a dense carpet of lightly spotted leaves. After cultivating since that time the leaves have become much larger closer to 60cm long, but narrow to only 5-7.5cm, while retaining the dense habit. Crusea coccinea Crg Crimson BSWJ10254 From a family of plants seldom seen as hardy, a prostrate growing creeping woodlander with fresh green small ribbed leaves on slender reddish rooting stems. Bearing bright red long trumpetflowers in axillary clusters for month during the summer. One of our collections gathered from the high mountain forests of Oaxaca southern Mexico in 2004. Easily grown in sheltered full to part shade in a freely drained soil with some humus for moisture retention, or kept frost free in a container. Dahlia excelsa Penelope Sky BSWJ10233 A stunning clump-forming perennial, where we found this species growing on the moist mountains to the east of Oaxaca southern Mexico in 2004 at around 2500m. Where it formed formidable clumps of strongly upright, almost bamboo-like bloomy stems to over 3m tall with several opposite branches from the shallowly cupshaped nodes, in the upper parts bearing bronzy pinnate foliage and large lilac-purple ray flowers from July to frost. For a sunny warm spot in moist but drained fertile soil, best protected from severe frost, hardy for us in a field with a decent mulch. Named for our youngest granddaughter born April 1st 2009. Viburnum cylindricum Crgs Classic BWJ7778 Easily distinguished from the rest of this species, in that it is much smaller in habit, with smaller leaves and stature. Also it is much earlier to come into flower than any other form we cultivate, for us opening its wide cymes of white cylindrical flowers by midsummer. Hence forming the small purple berries by late summer,

54

at which time our other forms are starting to flower. The collection appeared distinct in the wild, with decidedly serrated margins to the small ovate almost orbicular grey wax covered leaves on small shrubs to less than 2m tall. At 3100m the highest elevation we have found this species growing. In an area close to Lijiang in western Yunnan China where this shrub was plentiful in 2000.
