DIG/IT Digital Literacies for NYC High School Students

Thursday, October 13, 4:30 p.m. Wollman Hall, Eugene Lang Building, 65 West 11th Street, 5th floor
This panel will present a new, blended-by-design course in digital literacies that was developed for New York Citys transfer schools, which are small, alternative high schools for students at high risk of not graduating. To fulfill the requirements of the course, students must participate in a social, gamified, challenge-based experience called DIG/IT ("dig it"), (http://playdig.it). The digital literacy skills addressed by DIG/IT include researching and evaluating information, connecting with other people, and producing and sharing content. As a capstone project, students teach an aspect of what they have learned to a family member or friend. Panelists will discuss planned adaptation of the game, in partnership with Tech Goes Home colleagues in Boston, to create a mobile version that takes advantage of the features of mobile devices and activities students can complete outside the school environment.
