Mass Transfer- I- QUESTION BANK (CAT-I) PART-A 1. Differentiate the fluxes NA and JA.

For a binary mixture of A and B, Give the relationship between them. 2. Briefly explain the effect of temperature and pressure on diffusivity of gases and liquids. 3. State and explain Ficks law of diffusion. 4. Give Ficks second law of diffusion. 5. What is Knudsen diffusion? Explain. PART-B 1. Derive an expression for the molar flux of a gas A for the following cases. a. Steady state diffusion of A into non-diffusing gas B b. Equimolar counter diffusion of gases A and B. 2. Methane gas is diffusing in a straight tube 0.1 m long containing helium at 298K and a total

pressure of 1.01325x105 Pa. The partial pressure of CH4 is 1.400 x 10 Pa at one end and 1.333 x 103 Pa at the other end. Helium is insoluble in one boundary, and hence is non-diffusing. The Diffusivity is 0.675 cm2/s. Calculate the flux of Methane in kmol/s.m2.
3. Ammonia (A) is diffusing through a stagnant gas mixture consisting of one-third nitrogen (B) and 2 two-thirds hydrogen (C) by volume. The total pressure is 206.8 kN/m and the temperature is 54C. Calculate the rate of diffusion of Ammonia through a film of gas 0.5 mm thick when the concentration change across the film is 10% to 5% by volume. The diffusivities at 200 C and one -5 2 -4 standard atmosphere pressure are reported to be DAB = 5.391x10 m /s and DAC = 1.7371x10 2 m /s. 4. Estimate the diffusivity of Methanol in water at 15 C. Association factor for water is 2.26.

Atomic volumes of the various atoms are given below. Atom Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen Atomic volume ( x 10-3 m3) 14.8 3.7 7.4

5. With a neat sketch, explain Stefan tube experiment and derive the relation to determine the diffusivity of a gas. 6. A crystal of copper sulfate CuSO4.5H2O falls through a large tank of pure water at 20 C. Estimate the rate at which the crystal dissolves by calculating the flux of CuSO4 from the crystal surface to the bulk solution. Molecular diffusion occurs through a film of water uniformly 0.0305 mm thick surrounding the crystal. At the inner side of the film, adjacent to the crystal surface, the 3 concentration of CuSO4 is 0.0229 mole fraction CuSO4 (Density of the solution = 1193 kg/m ). -10 2 The outer surface of the film is pure water. The diffusivity of CuSO4 is 7.29x10 m /s. (Molecular weight of CuSO4 = 160) 7. Explain the different types of diffusion in solids in detail. 8. A thin narrow tube is used to measure the diffusivity of Chloroform in air at 25 C and 1 atm pressure. At the beginning of the experiments, the chloroform surface was 5.0 cm from the top of the tube and after 8.0 hours, the liquid surface had dropped to 0.4 cm from the initial conditions. If the concentration of chloroform is zero at the top of the tube, estimate the gas diffusion coefficient of chloroform in air. Data: Liquid density of chloroform = 1.485 g/c.c; V.P at 25 C = 200 mm Hg.
