receptors resulting in relaxation of smooth muscle of the bronchial tree, cardiac stimulation, and dilation of skeletal vasculature; small doses can cause vasodilation via beta2- vascular receptors; large doses may produce constriction of skeletal and vascular smooth muscle; decreases production of aqueous humor and increases aqueous outflow; dilates the pupil by contracting the dilator muscle

Precautions: Elderly, Pregnancy & lactation, cardiovascular disease, Arrhythmias, HPN, Hyperthyroidism, Glaucoma, DM

Indication: Bronchospasm s Anaphylactic Reactions Cardiac Arrest

Classification: Inotropic Agent Adrenergic Agonist Bronchodilator

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to epinephrine or any component Cardiac arrhythmias, Angle-closure glaucoma

Drug-Drug: Increased sympathomimet ic effects with other TCAs (eg, imipramine) Excessive hypertension with propranolol, beta-blockers, furazolidone Decreased cardiostimulating and bronchodilating effects with beta-adrenergic blockers (eg, propranolol) Decreased vasopressor effects with chlorpromazine, phenothiazines Decreased antihypertensiv e effect of guanethidine, methyldopa

Side Effects: CV: Pounding heartbeat, tachycardia, flushing, Hypertension CNS: Nervousness, restlessness, dizziness, headache, insomnia, lightheadedness GI: Nausea, vomiting

General Monitor heart rate, blood pressure, pulse Use extreme caution when calculating and preparing doses; epinephrine is a very potent drug. Protect drug solutions from light, extreme heat and freezing. Shake the suspension for injection well before withdrawing the dose. Injection Rotate SC injection sites to prevent necrosis; monitor sites frequently Make resuscitation equipments available Resuscitation drugs for anaphylactic reaction must be available Cardiac monitors must be attached to client.

Adverse Reaction: Ischemic injury Arrhythmias Respiratory difficulty Extravasation necrosis at injection site Plasma volume depletion on prolonged administration Pulmonary edema
