Post-Hurricane Irene Update: Wednesday, Aug.31


Post-Hurricane Irene, New Kent County has been recognized by FEMA as the hardest hit locality in Virginia. County offices are open for business during normal hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., although many County staff are still out working in the field to assist residents and complete damage assessments. Most questions can be handled by our Switchboard at (804) 966-9861; however, there is a special Public Inquiry Line set up
at (804) 966-9667. The Non-emergency Sheriffs Office Line is 804-966-9500. 911 services have been restored. Bottled Water & Bagged Ice: Limited amounts available for free through Thursday, Sept. 4, 4 p.m. at Bloom supermarket in Quinton (7300 Market Place Dr.), Colonial Downs in New Kent (10515 Colonial Downs Pkwy.) and Henrico Jail East in Barhamsville (17320 New Kent Hwy.). Public Potable Water Sources: There are four 24/7 locations to retrieve potable water Bloom, Henrico Jail East, the Visitors & Commerce Center (7324 Vineyards Pkwy., Providence Forge) and the Historic School (11819 New Kent Hwy.) behind Rose & Crown Restaurant. You must bring your own container(s). Five gallon maximum please. Feeding: The American Red Cross advises that they will be providing 1,000 meals in the parking lot of Colonial Downs between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., on Wednesday, August 31. Portable Shower Facilities: Residents can take showers beginning Sept. 1 at portable facilities set up in the Courthouse area behind Rose & Crown Restaurant. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Meeting to update local business: Scheduled for Thursday, September 1 at 10 a.m. in the Boardroom of the County Administration Building, 12007 Courthouse Circle, New Kent. Brush drop off : Until further notice, County residents can drop off brush no larger than 6 inches in caliper at Route 618/6301 Olivet Church Road. The site is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is the only site open at this timeall other sites have been overwhelmed with brush. Power: Please report all power outages to Dominion Virginia Power at 1-866-366-4357. We do not have an estimate on restoration of electricity. Schools: At this time, the opening of schools, as well open house/orientation functions, remains contingent on power restoration at all school locations. Questions regarding this should be directed to the School Board Office at 966-9650. Phone/Internet: Verizon has set up a communications trailer at the historic (former middle) school where New Kent residents can make free long distance calls to check in with friends and family, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 31. There is also internet access and cell phone charging capability. Storm Damage Repairs: Please be mindful of scams during this time. If a contractor offers something that sounds too good to be trueit probably is not true. In other news, the Board of Supervisors voted today to waive building permit & zoning fees for storm damage repairs. You must obtain the permit by Dec. 31, 2011 for fees to be waived.

For those with power, generator power or cell phone access, daily post-Hurricane Irene updates will be provided via local media sources as well as the Countys Facebook and Twitter pages. Daily flyers will also be available for pick up at the three water and ice distribution points when open.
