Dysgu am Oes / Learn for Life 2011-12 Welcome to Lifelong Learning 2011-12
With greater emphasis and importance now placed on part-time study I am pleased to welcome you to the 2011-12 Learn for Life brochure as offered by the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, one of the longest established departments of adult continuing education in Wales. Our programmes of study are going from strength to strength and are continually being updated to meet learners interests and career goals where emphasis is placed on enhancing employability. We offer a wide range of part-time courses aimed at personal and professional development, at levels and times to suit you. Our objective is to promote high quality learning opportunities for all. Whether you wish to develop your interests and knowledge of subject areas, or have a definite purpose in mind for your studies, such as gaining credits towards a qualification, our team of highly committed, well qualified, enthusiastic tutors are ready to meet your learning needs. We are also keen to develop partnerships with businesses to offer bespoke CPD courses to meet staff professional development needs. If you are interested in this we would value the opportunity to discuss this further. This year sees the re-location of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning onto the main University campus to eagerly waited premises with brand new learning and teaching environments. In conjunction with this move we will still be retaining a community presence for adult continuing education in the town of Aberystwyth. The current economic climate in education makes it increasingly challenging to deliver Higher Education in the community. Please take note that in 2011-12 many of our classes will be subject to strict pre-enrolment conditions. All classes offered will be governed by minimum class numbers. This is to ensure that our classes are financially viable. If you want to make sure of your place, please ensure that you enrol at least 3 weeks before the given start date. In return, you can help yourself to our improved Early Bird discount scheme and reduce the cost or your studies. So please read on to discover the many exciting opportunities we provide for study. Best Wishes Dr Malcolm Thomas Director, School of Education and Lifelong Learning

Further, children accompanying adults for reasons of child-care, will not be accepted For more detailed information on this policy, please look under heading of General Information, which is to be found towards the back of this brochure. Tessa Waite delivers our art practice courses in the Brecon area.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I have been living in Powys for the past twenty years; its gentle beauty is the backdrop to my work. I moved here to do a residency at a psychiatric hospital. During this time I was able to consider how creative processes can be used to explore and express life experiences. I invited dance and music practitioners to collaborate with me for specific projects. Enabling others to engage with the creative process had a longlasting effect on my own work. I draw on my daily Buddhist practice as a member of SGI-UK for over 20 years. Witnessing and being part of my childrens lives has reconnected me to my own life experience in a dynamic way, which has led to finding new materials and ways of working. How would you describe your own practice as an artist? I am exploring the multi-layered nature of human experience, how memory and myth break into and impact upon the present. This is something I think has always been at the core of my work. I use a variety of media in order to find ways of representing and interpreting imagery that can explore emotion and its resonance within ourselves and others. I exhibit my work and alongside painting and drawing I have recently begun to use digital media, animation and to make site responsive pieces. What do you gain from teaching? Seeing students growing in confidence and taking risks is really exciting. A big part of teaching for me is facilitating the group; students can offer so much to each other in terms of their development and enjoyment of their work. When everyone is hard at work it generates a creative energy that is unique. It is a privilege to share the joy of exploring the world through the medium of visual art.
What advantages have the digital age brought to your profession? I have enjoyed working with new technology, though it can be quite frustrating when it doesnt go to plan or goes wrong. I found that translating old slide transparencies into a digital format allowed me to play with the images, animate them and overlay them, which was very enriching. What advice would you give a potential student embarking on a course for the first time? See it as a process, you are embarking on a series of experiments rather than making Art. Try and enjoy these experiments, relax and dont worry about achieving a specific outcome. Mistakes are an important part of the process and often lead the way to new discoveries. Be prepared to take a few risks and try things out and dont judge yourself harshly. If you won the lottery what would you do? I never do the lottery, but if I did receive a large amount of money I would make a big donation to my Buddhist organisation that is actively seeking to develop dialogues to promote peace, education and culture worldwide, is a Non Governmental Organisation at the United Nations and is committed to nuclear disarmament. Id pay off our mortgage and spend some time travelling across the globe by train with my husband and two boys. I would love to share with them the experience of exploring new places and meeting people from other cultures. Travelling by train is a great way to connect with the people around you. Id buy some time to live, work and exhibit abroad. I would also love to set up a studio/cafe here in Wales where I and other artists could run courses, host residencies that offered a stimulating environment to make work in but was also a meeting place where ideas could form and take flight The list could go on.....!

Kaori Oikawa
Kaori has been teaching Japanese at Aberystwyth since 2004. Japanese is a very different language (not difficult!) for westerners, but she makes the classes so interesting, friendly, and enjoyable. Class materials are customized so that grammar is introduced effectively, practice and exercises for learning are done with lots of pair work and situational conversation. Manga, Anime, and TV Commercials are interestingly used in the classes. Cultural aspects are essential as well. Having events such as Adult Learners Day and recently held Help Japan Tsunami Appeal Open Day, students are exploring the richness of Japanese culture. Kaori enjoys meeting a wide cross section of students at Aberystwyth and looks forward to meeting many more in the coming years. Hope you can join us.
With over 7 years experience in Mandarin Chinese teaching, Su Chu Lu provides the most professional Mandarin teaching to learners of different backgrounds. She believes that keeping classes practical, interesting and fun is important. She also really loves exploring different aspects of language and culture with her students. Past experience has taught her that students can best learn the language if taught in a relaxed and stimulating environment. In order to make her students have fun and effective learning, she is not just using drill exercises. She tries to use customized teaching materials for her students by organizing Chinese New Year celebration to let her students involve and understand the culture through the activity, and also using current Chinese movies, TV programs, newspaper and magazine articles.
Sarah Gurney-Hoyland
Sarah has been teaching Spanish in SELL for the last 12 years. She loves all things Hispanic developed through her studies of Latin America. This led her to a degree in Human Geography and ab initio Spanish. She was lucky enough to spend a year abroad in Mexico, living with a family, studying at the local University and travelling widely. Along with extensive travels and living in Spain she feels she has gained a broad spectrum of experience of Hispanic culture and language. She spends all of my free time with my two young children, watching them learning to talk has given her new insights into learning a language. She has a TEFL qualification and a PGCE and has taught children and adults of all ages from 8 to 80 at different levels including Alevel and GCSE. She really enjoys teaching Spanish to adults for the School, the students come from all walks of life and want to learn Spanish for a multitude of reasons. Many have no previous language experience but as she was a true beginner in Spanish at University she feels she has empathy with adult learners starting from scratch. It is great to see students moving from little or no knowledge to getting their message across to holding a fluent conversation in Spanish on almost any topic.
Mari Dalis-Davies
Having completed a joint degree in French and Welsh at Aberystwyth university, Mari has been teaching French in schools for the past 25 years. She is at present deputy head at Ysgol Gyfun Llanbed and combines the administrative post with her teaching responsibilities. She also has several years experience of teaching adults having taught both French and Welsh for adults. In her spare time, Mari enjoys travelling, reading and cooking and at the moment is learning Italian.

Animal Diversity
Whats the difference between an earthworm, a roundworm and a slowworm or on a furry note between a rat and a rabbit? There are a huge number of different animal species on planet earth and scientists need to find some order out of the chaos. Find out the science behind sorting out members of the Animal Kingdom. From A for aardvark to Z for zebra and all types of animals large and small in between, their relationships to each other will be revealed. By examining their structure and studying the evolutionary processes that resulted in this diversity of form, you will be able to place animals in to related groups. This is a fascinating and essential core course for both ecology Certificates. Understanding British Mammals 1: Gnawers, Nibblers and Insect Crunchers The Diversity of Invertebrates in West Wales
Discover the wide range of invertebrate animals that can be found in west Wales. The focus is on practical methods of capturing, handling and identifying specimens found in various habitats around the venue. This will include using pit-fall traps for those that crawl, beating and sweep-nets for those that fly and hopefully light trapping for moths and other night fliers. With the specimens indoors, their amazing diversity, adaptations and life cycles will be revealed with the aid of microscopes, identification keys and of course, help from the tutor. Techniques essential for carrying out surveys which form the basis of management plans for their conservation is also covered. A wider range of organisms are covered when compared with the Entomology (insects only), these including: woodlice, millipedes, spiders molluscs, earthworms and insects. As a consequence this course is not so weather dependent and you could select a focus group. 80(70) Fee Waiver 5 10 Credits Level 1 Cilgerran Welsh Wildlife Centre Fri-Sun 10am - 4.30pm 3 Sessions Starting: 25/05/12 End Date: 27/05/12 Philip Ward AD301 Machynlleth Centre for Alternative Technology Fri-Sun 10am - 4.30pm 3 Sessions Starting: 01/06/12 End Date: 03/06/12 Philip Ward AF308 This course covers an exciting range of mammals including insectivores, rodents, rabbits, hares and deer. Species identification including skulls, life cycles, habits and habitats will be just some of the topics covered in the workshops. Practical and field exercises will involve: characteristic field-signs, with a guide to tracks and trails, feeding remains, droppings, nests and burrows together with population and monitoring techniques with field-sign surveys using long-worth trapping (during the course at the venue) and owl pellet analysis. The distribution and status of these mammals, including any BAP species and Wildlife Law, will be discussed. Angela Polkey
Angie first practised permaculture in her tiny urban garden in Sussex and then moved to Wales with her partner in 1997. Combining conservation of wildlife with sustainable use of natural resources and growing food - all at once- was not a widely known concept in conservation circles at the time! It is now a way of life for Angie whose small acreage has several developing forest gardens, vegetable beds, a polytunnel, wildlife habitats, hard working chickens (a special permaculture breed!) and is designed to minimise inputs and maximise outputs over the longer term. Angie has a background in ecology and conservation which helps her understand and communicate the natural patterns and processes that have inspired permaculture. Amongst many qualifications she holds a phD in Ecology and An Advanced Certificate of Education focussing on Environmental Education.

Coastlines: Form and Function
West Wales has a spectacular coastline with some impressive features including towering cliffs, sandy beaches, beautiful bays and sand dunes. Do you know how they were formed? To gain an insight into the origins of our coastline some of the historical and present day processes that have produced these coastal features will be investigated and discussed. Two or more field excursions will take place to examine local coastal features and to apply the theories of geomorphology to explain and understand what is observed. 60(50) 10 Credits Level 1 Cardigan Guildhall Tuesday 11am - 1pm 10 Sessions Starting: 31/01/12 (Half term: 14/02/2012) End Date: 10/04/12 Andrew Crossley AB201
Barry Thomas
Barrys background in botany and geology mean that all aspects of plant evolution and the past distribution of plants fascinate him from the earliest plant life to the recent traumas of the Ice Age. His research has centred on living and fossil clubmosses and ferns taking him around the British Isles and many European, American and Asian countries in search of them. He even cultivates a small collection of ferns at home. The loss of important plant fossil sites encouraged his interest and involvement in geological conservation. The illegal international trade in plants and plant products is another subject that has taken up a lot of his time while working with conservation societies. His qualifications include a PhD and DSc through researching plant fossils from the Coal Measures and his previous posts have included Head of Life Sciences and Dean of Science at Goldsmiths London and Keeper of Botany at the National Museum Cardiff.
Geology - An Introduction
Partly field-based, this course covers a wide range of topics and gives an excellent Introduction to geology. Indoor sessions starting 13/9/11 will also be used to introduce topics before field visits or consolidate knowledge gained after visits. Areas covered include; the main rock forming minerals and rock types and how to identify them; the basic concepts of stratigraphy and simple geological structures such as folds and faults; identify geological structures in the field; interpreting and using geological maps; making observations in the field. 60(50) 10 Credits Level 1 Cardigan Guildhall Tuesday 1pm - 3.30pm 5 Sessions plus a days field trip (to be arranged with students) Starting: 13/09/11 End Date: 11/10/11 Barry Thomas AB106

Plant Diversity
Whats the difference between grass, ferns and mosses? They are plants and have green leaves. Yes, but we need to know a great deal more about the diversity of plants to develop an interest in the environment, field biology, wildlife and gardening. Find out the science behind sorting out members of the Plant Kingdom. (The secret is in their life cycles and structure of their reproductive organs!) From A for anemone to Z for zinnia and all types of conifers, horsetails, ferns and mosses in between, their relationships to each other will be revealed. By examining their structure and studying the evolutionary processes that resulted in this diversity of form, you will be able to place plants in to related groups. There will be plenty of specimens to examine. This is a fascinating and essential core course for both ecology Certificates. It is an excellent background for anyone interested other courses involving plant life. 80(70) Fee Waiver 5 10 Credits Level 1 Machynlleth Centre for Alternative Technology Fri-Sun 10am - 4.30pm 3 Sessions Starting: 04/05/12 End Date: 06/05/12 Sarah Watson-Jones AF304 Lampeter Denmark Farm Fri-Sun 10am-4.30pm 3 Sessions Starting: 03/08/12 End Date: 05/08/12 Sarah Watson-Jones AB100V
Botanical Illustration: 1
This is an ideal course for those wishing to explore the painting of a variety of botanical topics. Starting with the basic techniques of drawing, the course gradually builds upon individual experience and confidence gained. Drawing skills and techniques will be developed through demonstrations in which we will also look at perspective drawing. We will be looking at tonal mixtures and gradients, exploring different mediums and their suitability for your chosen subject. You will be taught a variety of drawing techniques and how to apply washes to suit your design. The course is highly illustrated and you will gain an insight into the techniques used by Master Painters and their designs, besides being taught about the botanical terms, names and functions of the plants used. At the end of the course you will be able to design, draw and mix the appropriate colours to create a realistic botanical illustration of your favourite plants. It is highly recommended that you have experience of watercolour and drawing before taking this class. 60(50) 10 Credits Level 1 Welshpool The Loft, Coed Y Dinas Wednesday 10am- 3pm 6 Sessions 28/09/11 09/11/11 07/12/11 25/01/12 22/02/12 End Date: 07/03/12 Moya Davern CF120
