EXAMPLE 1
In the figure, the lens on the left is a converging glass lens (n1 = 1.66) and has radii of curvature of magnitude R1 = 10.0 cm and R2 = 15.0 cm. The lens on the right is a diverging lens (n2 = 1.49) with radii of curvature of magnitude R1 = 22.0 cm and R2 = 18.0 cm. The two lenses are separated by a distance d = 12.0 cm. An object is placed at a distance of 15.0 cm to the left of the converging lens. (a) What are the focal lengths of the two lenses? (b) What is the position and magnification of the image created by the converging lens? (c) What is the position and magnification of the final image?

EXAMPLE 2
A light ray enters a rectangular block of plastic at an angle 1 = 43.5 and emerges at an angle 2 = 77.4, as shown in the figure below. The medium surrounding the block is air (index of refraction nair = 1.0). [hint: sin(90-) = cos()] (a) Determine the index of refraction of the plastic. (b) If the light ray enters the plastic at a point L = 55.0 cm from the bottom edge, how long does it take the light ray to travel through the plastic?

A high-powered, pulsed laser ( = 600 nm) used to confine plasma for nuclear fusion studies has a power output of 15 MW. The laser beam is focused on a circular pellet with a diameter of 0.3 mm, and each pulse of the laser lasts 1 ns (10-9 s). (a) What is the intensity of the beam? (b) What are the values of the peak electric and magnetic fields of the beam? (c) How many wavelengths fit into one pulse? (d) What is the total energy carried by each pulse? (e) If the pellet completely absorbs the laser beam, what is the total momentum imparted on the pellet by each pulse?

EXAMPLE 4
A fish is swimming in water inside a thin spherical glass bowl of uniform thickness. Assuming that the radius of curvature of the bowl is 30.0 cm, and ignoring the glass of the bowl, locate the image of the fish for the three locations of the fish described below: (a) 10.0 cm beyond the center of the bowl, towards the side of the bowl that is away from the observer (position A). (b) 10.0 cm from the side of the bowl, between the observer and the center of the bowl (position B). (c) At the center of the bowl (position C).

EXAMPLE 5 (PROBLEM 31.58)

An L-R-C series circuit consists of a 2.50 F capacitor, a 5.00 mH inductor, and a 75.0 resistor connected across an ac source of voltage amplitude 15.0 V having variable frequency. (a) Under what circumstances is the average power delivered to the circuit equal to the circuit equal to VrmsIrms? (b) Under the conditions of part (a), what is the average power delivered to each circuit element and what is the maximum current through the capacitor?

PROBLEM 34.94
A candle is placed at the center of curvature of a concave mirror with f = 10.0 cm. The converging lens has f =32.0 cm and is 85.0 cm to the right of the candle. The candle is viewed looking through the lens from the right. The lens forms two images of the candle. The first is formed by light passing directly through the lens. The second image is formed from the light that goes from the candle to the mirror, is reflected, and then passes through the lens. (a) Draw ray diagrams for each of these two images. (b) For each image, determine (i) where is the image, (ii) is it real or virtual, and (iii) is the image upright or inverted with respect to the original object?

EXAMPLE 6
A 60.0- resistor is connected in series with a 30.0-F capacitor and a source whose maximum voltage is 120 V, operating at 60.0 Hz. Find (a) the capacitive reactance of the circuit, (b) the impedance of the circuit, and (c) the maximum current in the circuit. (d) Does the voltage lead or lag the current? (e) How will adding an inductor in series with the existing resistor and capacitor affect the current? Explain.
