    The Kachin Women's Association of Thailand (KWAT) released a report documenting atrocities committed by the Burmese army against civilians since breaking a 17-year ceasefire with the Kachin Independence Army in June. The report found that over 25,000 civilians have been displaced and that women and children have suffered rape, sexual violence, torture, and killings. BurmasCoveredUpWar:AtrocitiesAgainsttheKachinPeoplebytheKachinWomensAssociationof Thailand(KWAT)documentsatrocitiescommittedbytheBurmaArmysinceitbrokea17yearceasefire withtheKachinIndependenceArmy(KIA)onJune9.Womenandchildrenhavesufferedsomeofthe worstcrimes,includingrapeandsexualviolence.37womenandgirlswererapedduringthefirsttwo monthsoftheconflict;13ofthesewerekilled. Ourdocumentationteamwasdeeplyshockedatthedetailsofthesecrimes.Somewomenweregang rapedinfrontoftheirfamilies.Inonecase,soldiersslaughteredawomansgrandchildinfrontofher beforerapingandkillingheralso,saidKWATspokespersonShirleySeng. AtrocitieshaveescalatedsincetheregimeexpandeditsoffensiveinSeptember,deployingover1,000 troopsfromninebattalionstoseizeKachinstrongholdsinnorthernShanState.OnSeptember24,three separaterapeincidentsbyBurmaArmytroopsoccurredinMuseandKutkaitownships,ShanState, involvingtwogirls,aged14and17,andonewoman,aged40. ThousandsofvillagersfromKutkaihavebeendisplacedinrecentweeks,butdeniedrefugeinChinaand unabletoaccesscampsinKIAcontrolledareasofKachinState,havedispersedtotowns,othervillages andjunglehidingsites. Over25,000villagersalreadyshelteringinmakeshiftcampsalongtheKachinChinaborderarefacing severeshortagesoffoodandmedicine,astheregimehasblockedagenciesworkingofficiallyinside Burmafromassistingthem.Appealstoforeigngovernmentstoaddressthishumanitariancrisishaveso farfallenondeafears. KWATisurgingtheinternationalcommunitytoabandonitswaitandseepolicywithBurma,bring increasedpressureontheregimetoenditsmilitaryoffensivesandatrocities,andprovideurgently neededhumanitarianassistancetothedisplacedKachin.
