    Chapter 5: The New Republic (1789-1801)

    Week 8 10/18/11 Tuesday Class Reading completed upon coming to class: Last Best Hope pp. 133-153 Current Event Due Vocabulary Literature (you should be nearing completion) When we meet for class we will discuss this weeks reading. I would like for you to be familiar with and be able to talk about these things. I suggest you write about them or talk about them with someone else before class: Washington as president Washingtons cabinet (people he chose to be a part of his executive branch) Work of the first Congress conflicts and accomplishments Bill of Rights Hamilton and his plan; how did he conflict with Jefferson? Honors level assignments for this week: Prepare for Opportunity Questions PSH 30-35 Bartram Autobiography When we meet we will have an economics lesson on production and I will give you a new economics handout for your notebook. We will talk about how to examine historical documents (this is an AP skill).

    Week 9 10/25/11 Tuesday Class Reading completed upon coming to class: Last Best Hope pp. 153-176 Vocabulary Literature (You should be nearing completion or be finished already. If you are finished be sure to put a copy of your project or data sheet in your notebook.) When we meet for class we will discuss this weeks reading. . I would like for you to be familiar with and be able to talk about these things. I suggest you write about them or talk about them with someone else before class: French Revolution differences between French & American revolutions Citizen Genet Whiskey Rebellion Conflicts with British (Northwest Territory) and our friend John Jay Difficulties of the election of 1796 John Adams as president XYZ affair Adams vs. Jefferson and Madison (Alien & Sedition acts vs. Virginia and Kentucky resolutions) War with France? Election of 1800 Aaron Burr Political parties name them and know something about them who was in which party? Go back to the beginning of the chapter or even look in other chapters. We will spend some time trying to sort them out.
