On the heels of Steve Jobs resignation in August, Apple Inc.,
the American multinational corporation that designs and markets
consumer electronics, computer software and personal computers
named Timothy D. Cook as its new chief executive officer.
The news did not come as a surprise as Cook has spent
30 years distinguishing himself in the computer industry. He
spent the early years of his career at IBM and Compaq and
the past 14 years as Steve Jobs lieutenant at Apple.
The Alabama native was appointed by Jobs in 1998 as
senior vice president to oversee the manufacturing of Apple
computers. Cook revolutionised Apples supply chain and built
strong relationships with external manufacturers. Hes been
credited for reducing inventory by virtually eliminating stockpiled
inventory, closing down warehouses and getting products into
consumers hands as directly from the manufacturing factories
as possible. Cook also convinced Apple to steer away from
manufacturing its own components and instead partner with
external manufacturers like Foxconn. He was promoted to
chief operating officer in 2007 and spearheaded Apples
Macintosh division.
Cook is an industrial engineer by training, and also
earned a masters degree in business administration from
Duke University, US.
Cook may not mirror the same charismatic dynamism of Jobs,
however, the industry views him as an intelligent and a capable
leader. How he meets the immediate challenges in furthering the
companys digital video plans will be closely watched.

Microsoft missed a couple of beats as professionals and
consumers began to spend more time on tablets and
smartphones to work and socialise. With Windows 8, Microsoft
aims at regaining the ground it has lost to Apple.
According to Gartner, sales of touch tablets will grow nearly four
times, to 69.8 per cent this year. Apples iPad has consistently
dominated the tablet market, with competitors coming and leaving
the market without affecting its growth. But its time the world got
an alternative to iPad. If Microsoft can take a significant bite of the
fast growing tablet market, it will boost the companys profit as well.
Windows is a huge force in the operating system market.
The company enjoys a market share of 90 per cent for desktop
operating systems. When Windows 8 will work with tablets, people
will want a device running on a Windows operating system.
Several vendors are lining up for the support of the Windows 8
tablet, with Samsung and Dell bringing it to the market. The price
will be driven by the hardware specs of the tablet. Different vendors
will create rival tablets to drive the competition in terms of specs
and prices. Apple has made it difficult for the vendors to buy the
hardware needed to make tablets in a large volume.
