ditor’s note
Dear Educator,Stop me if you’ve heard this one:
How are
 you
handling the technology shift?
Please, don’t run away! I feel yourpain . . . and I think I can help.I don’t know about you, but it seems as though I cannot attend an educational conference, read a teacher blog, oreven open a newspaper without nding an article that struggles with this question. And the Random House Academicteam is as guilty as everyone else! This past summer we put this question to a select group of educators who sharedtheir time and energy with us for an active breakfast roundtable discussion in our NYC headquarters. While

mostacknowledged
a strong desire to engage students with the variety of tools available
, all agreed that no onemethodology or approach is the clear answer. Rather, it is clear that this is
a time of trial and error
.However, amidst all of this uncertainty and even confusion, one fact remains: there has never been a greaterdemand for varied content as there is now. If one thing is clear to us, it is this: our responsibility as a 21stcentury publisher is to offer you, the educator,
the books you wish to teach, in any format you prefer
.It is with this mission in mind that I share with you our
2012 Language Arts and Social Studies Catalog
.Not only will you nd information about new books, but also links to ancillary

resources freely available fordownloading on our website and blog. These resources—including
teacher’s guides, video clips, book trailers, special messages from authors
—can enhance both your teaching of and students’ reading of books. We’ve alsomade sure to indicate all the different formats available for each book, and we’ve identied books that are ideal forreluctant readers with this logo: .In addition to our commitment to you, the educator, we are equally committed to—and proud of!—ourauthors.
Wes Moore
(
The Other Wes Moore
, see page 35) graced the cover of
Time
magazine this past summer asone of ve featured veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who have launched ambitious and creative serviceprojects back home. You can read Wes’s message to educators at:
http://tinyurl.com/4jbv4ye
.Since its publication in hardcover almost two years ago, teachers and students can’t stop talking about
 Rebecca Skloot’s
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
, now available in paperback (see page 18). Check out the
classroom poster
for the book, which you will nd at the back of the catalog. And last but certainly not least, we’ve compiled a list of our recent
