New board for TWAL
he Annual General Meeting of Transport Women Australia Limited took place on 5 September. During the meeting, the new board for the organisation was announced. Pam McMillan (D & P Haulage, Albury/Wodonga) was named new Chair; and Melissa Strong (Lindsay Transport, Brisbane) was announced as the new Vice Chair. Other members of the board are Jacquelene Brotherton (Oxford Cold Storage, Melbourne) as Immediate Past Chair and Rebecca Delahaye (rthealth, Sydney). It is great to see board members from different areas of Australia working with such enthusiasm for our members, Mrs McMillan said as she paid tribute to the outgoing Chair, Jacquelene. We have a good team
and work well together, and we look forward to our exciting future. Transport Women Australia Limited promotes the contribution women make to the transport industry in all aspects of transport, and provides opportunities for networking, mentoring, education and personal development and growth for our members. It is encouraging to see that our membership now includes women involved in the maritime and rail industries. In recent times Transport Women Australia Ltd has responded to real issues such as viability for smaller operators and their families, and the impact on the communities they live in. Our conferences and seminars pertain to issues that directly affect women working in all areas of
transport, and we are involved in many other organisations as speakers and presenters at their events. Mrs McMillan also announced that the TWAL network has been broadened to include membership of Women in Trucking in America and Women in Logistics in the UK; and representation as a council member of the Australian Trucking Association. Our organisation has a strong base and we are looking forward to continuing our growth of networks right throughout the country. I hope other women involved in all modes of transport would be encouraged to contact myself, the other directors or our administrator for further information and details on how to become involved, said Mrs McMillan.
he National Transport Commission (NTC) recently released a discussion paper called Smart Transport for a Growing Nation. The document highlights the disparity between transport system improvements and their funding and the lack of public knowledge about the way our roads and rail systems are funded. Our research found that Australians have very little knowledge about the way that the transport system is funded, or about pricing models that operate overseas, said NTC Chief Executive, Nick Dimopoulos. Interestingly, when given further information, the community was
more open to pricing reform as long as it was fair and did not limit car use. According to the discussion paper, Australians want a better transport system, but reject many policies that would help pay for it. The discussion paper also explores opportunities for reforming Australias freight and passenger transport networks, in response to challenges that include areas such as population growth and aging, as well as urban congestion, accessibility, rising oil prices, and carbon pollution. There are currently $85 billion of transport projects on the national
infrastructure priority list with some estimates of an overall infrastructure backlog of $770 billion, Mr Dimopoulos explained. Looking at ways of financing this backlog and introducing new policies to improve the efficiency of existing infrastructure will help ease the impact of urban congestion on road users and our economy. The Smart Transport for a Growing Nation discussion paper can be accessed via the NTC website at www.ntc.gov.au. It will be open for public comment until 14 October 2011. The NTC invites individuals and organisations to issue submissions.

Daimler and Foton joint venture
eijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. (BFDA) has received its final approval from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). This is an important step for the global growth strategy of Daimler, as well as the local expansion of our portfolio, says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. With our 50 per cent stake in Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive, we are further strengthening our position as an important player in the China market. Having now received the final green light for the joint venture, this also sends out a clear signal that we deliver on what we promise. The final approval for the joint venture between Daimler Trucks and Foton Motor marks another important step in the implementation of Daimler Trucks Global Excellence strategy and will allow it to thoroughly participate in the growth of the Chinese truck market. In 2010, the Chinese market for trucks over six tonne GVW had a volume of 1.2 million units. Forecasts indicate that about 1.5 million trucks over six
tonnes GVW will be sold annually in China from now until 2020. This marks a milestone for the joint venture between Daimler and the Chinese truck manufacturer, Foton Motor, and for the implementation of Daimler Trucks worldwide strategy, says Andreas Renschler, a member of Daimlers Board of Management and Head of Daimler Trucks and Buses. The flexibility, persistence, patience, and intercultural understanding of both parties were decisive factors in forging this partnership and obtaining the final go-ahead. Receiving the final approval from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce is an important step in our China strategy, which is based on a thorough understanding of and longterm commitment to this country. Thanks to the great progress made during the past few months, the way is now clear for both partners to establish the joint venture, says Ulrich Walker, Chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia. Through this joint venture, Daimler will gain a 50 per cent stake in Foton Motors medium and heavy duty truck business. This further
strengthens our position to address all segments of the market in China: passenger cars, trucks, vans and financial services. Daimler will contribute its technological expertise to the joint venture especially in the area of diesel engines and exhaust gas systems so that Chinese emissions limits, ranging up to the Euro V standard, can be fulfilled. Localised production of Mercedes-Benzs redeveloped OM 457 engines will be an integral part of future operations at the joint venture. We are very pleased to see that the joint venture between Daimler Trucks and Beiqi Foton has obtained approval, since Daimler is a longstanding associate of ours here in China. This marks another milestone in the strategic cooperation between Daimler and BAIC, says Xu Heyi, Chairman of BAIC. Both partners will use Fotons truck brand Auman as a platform to grow business in China and look at cooperation opportunities outside of China. In addition to making use of our sales and service network for the medium and heavy duty truck sector, Foton Motor will also contribute its market know-how in China and the rest of Asia to the joint venture, explains Wang Jingyu, CEO and President of Foton Motor. Foton has seen rapid growth since entering the truck business in 1998. Last year it sold nearly 105,000 medium and heavy duty trucks (and nearly 66,500 units during the first half of 2011). A second truck plant is already being ramped up, giving the Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive joint venture a total production capacity of 160,000 trucks.

VTA congratulates Freight Industry Award winners
he Victorian Transport Association (VTA) hosted the 22nd Annual Australian Freight Industry Awards on Saturday 3 September 2011. Over 1000 guests attended the event, which was held at the Crown Palladium Ballroom. The Australian Freight Industry Awards is one of the most prestigious events on the freight and logistics calendar. The unique awards are designed to reward excellence and to raise the standards and public perception of the Australian freight and logistics industry. Entertainment included a tribute to Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, plus Tim Campbell presented the Tim Campbell Retro Experience and Australian Pop Icon, Normie Rowe hosted the Awards along with VTA Chief Executive, Philip Lovel AM. During the night there was also a
surprise performance from singer Anthony Callea. VTA CEO Philip Lovel commented on the event, The night was a spectacular show, and a fantastic celebration the awards are a testament to the quality of companies operating in the freight and logistics industry and recognise the hard work of all our people. The great new venue was fantastic and with such a large crowd the atmosphere was electric. He continued, This year saw many excellent nominations in most award categories. I was disappointed that there were no nominations for the Environment category, so that award was cancelled. A reflection of the current times, but certainly disappointing since I know some companies could have applied. Nonetheless we were very pleased
with all the other nominations, which demonstrated how some companies and individuals have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make their work more innovative, efficient and safer for the betterment of the Industry. Winners of the 2011 Australian Freight Industry Awards are: 1. Australian Best Practice Safety Award: VicRoads. 2. Australian Freight Innovation/ Technology Award: Noske Logistics. 3. Australian Freight Industry Promotion & Careers Award: McColls Transport. 4. Australian Freight and Logistics Award: Victoria University Institute of Supply Chain & Logistics. 5. Australian Freight and Logistics Personality of the Year: Max Luff, Chairman, Border Express.
ransport Certification Australia Limited (TCA), which is the company administering the Intelligent Access Program (IAP), has announced that Vehicle Management Systems Pty Ltd (VMS) has been certified as an IAP service provider. VMS acquired the Minorplanet Asia Pacific Pty Ltd commercial telematics business in 2010 and has since sought to become an IAP service provider. IAP is a voluntary program that uses

VMS has been committed to achieving this certification and it gives me great pleasure to welcome them into the selective group of telematics providers certified to provide IAP Services, said Chief Executive Officer of TCA, Chris Koniditsiotis. NTI crash figures show cars at fault
esearch released by trucking industry insurer, National Transport Insurance (NTI), has found car drivers are at fault in 82% of fatal crashes involving trucks. The NTI 2011 Major Accident Investigation Report found that no other vehicles were involved in 70% of major truck accidents but in fatal crashes involving other vehicles, the other driver was at fault in 82%
of the accidents. The investigation used data from 323 major crash incidents, costing over $50,000 in value, costing a total of $44 million. Inappropriate speed was found to be the cause of 41.9% of accidents and fatigue related crashes have reduced by 50% since the last research report was published. The Bruce Highway and the
Warrego Highway in Queensland were found to have more accidents proportionally than any other major roads. Accidents on the Hume Highway dropped significantly in the period since 2003 from 11.1% to 2.5% of all the major truck crashes. Despite 46% of freight being carried on Australian roads by B-doubles, these vehicles only account for 28% of the serious truck accidents.

through which they will be able to both easily access current and up-todate information, and provide their feedback.

Shell Diesel Extra now available in Australia
he introduction of Shells Diesel Extra to the Australian market is now complete. The product was developed over a three-year period in laboratories around the globe to help benefit the commercial road transport sector. It is designed to deliver fuel savings of up to three per cent over the lifetime of a vehicle compared to regular diesel. In addition to fuel savings, Shell Diesel Extra is designed to help reduce CO2 emissions, improve engine performance, prevent fuel system corrosion, reduce foaming, and reduce maintenance costs.
Mick Pattinson, Shell Australias Senior Fuels and Lubricants Technical Advisor, said, Shell Diesel Extra should help the transport sector improve fuel efficiency and reduce their maintenance costs. John Kingwill, owner of Kingwill Bulk Logistics and Shell Card customer, has been in the transport industry for 15 years and knows what a big difference a good fuel can make. Since we started using Diesel Extra for our fleet, weve been getting more kilometres to the litre, the motors are running smoother and the drivers are saying theyre getting more power, he explained. A standard run for
us is around 400km so its a big difference on the bottom line. To make Shell Diesel Extra more readily available to customers, Shell has invested $5 million on upgrading its retail network this year. Diesel Extra is now available to approved customers at five Shell terminals around the country, including Newport (VIC), Parramatta (NSW), Pinkenba and Townsville (QLD), and Kalgoorie (WA). It is also available at 66 Shell branded service stations, including Coles Express sites, dealer owned sites and unmanned truck stops in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
in roles including automotive engineering, fleet management and product support. In his new role, Mr Keogh will be based at WMCs Auckland office and will fulfill a broad product support role including product specifications, regulation and compliance, service and warranty, parts, sales and
customer support. Kellys long involvement in the New Zealand automotive industry and his wealth of experience gained across his various roles as a distributor, dealer and customer will be a huge asset to WMC as we grow the business in New Zealand, said CEO of WMC Group, Jason Pecotic.
ob Waldron, Executive Director of the Transport Industries Skills Centre in the ACT, was recently appointed as a new member of the board of TruckSafe. Mr Waldron is leading an organisation that is promoting and developing a safety focused driver education system, to help provide a skilled workforce for the transport
industry, said TruckSafe Chairman Stephen Marley. He added, The skill centre is also part of the National Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council network, and helps develop industry competency standards, which form the basis of nationally accredited training. This is very much in line with the
TruckSafe accreditation, which is based on four key standards: training, management, maintenance, and workplace and driver health. The board will be looking at workplace health and safety, driver health screening (including medicals), the role of the medical practitioner, rehabilitation and fatigue management.
