HOW IT WORKS
Air from the existing trailer air supply is routed to a control box, then into each axle. Acting as a conduit, the axles carry air through a rotary union assembly at the spindle end, which then distributes the air to each tyre as needed. The rotary union is the only moving part in the entire system, making it virtually maintenance-free.

Metropolitan Express buys into WA boom
Lazzas Larry White (L) with Metropolitan Express Director, Sam Pantou
n a move to enter West Australias booming economy, Melbourne transport company Metropolitan Express Transport Services has acquired Perth-based haulage business Lazzas Hiab & Tilt Tray Service. Metropolitan Express Director, Sam Pantou, said the privately owned company seized the opportunity to take over a WA-based business because it amounted to an investment in a company with a strong history and fundamentals in an industry segment we understand and where we can add significant value. Lazzas operates from a fully serviced depot in Forrestfield and services all of WA, with a special focus on supplying the mining and construction industry. The companyalso offers interstate haulage and courier services in the Perth metro area. Lazzas was founded as a classic one truck, one man business
in 1996, when owner Larry White moved from Queensland to Western Australia. The company has since grown to a fleet of 22, with a team of 20 people. According to Metropolitan Express Sam Pantou, Larry will retain a minority shareholding in the business, while Metropolitan Express will take over administrative control. Larry has been operating various trucks and co-ordinating transport equipment for more than 25 years and was able to establish strong relationships with blue-chip clients during that time. Hence we believe Larrys philosophy and visions are compatible in many areas of our business and we welcome the White family as shareholders, Mr Pantou said. For now, both Metropolitan Express and Lazzas continue trading under their existing names; the only notable change is that we will install additional
management staff in Perth, Pantou added. The future will then see the gradual implementation of Metropolitan Express corporate identity. Pantou also said all staff will retain their current positions. In fact, we are looking at expanding the business in the near future and we will continue placing high value on local expertise. A number of WA-based clients have already signalised that they are excited to see the Metropolitan Express brand move west. Founded in 1986, Metropolitan Express has grown from a fleet of twelve vehicles in its first year, to now running in excess of 200 vehicles, ranging in size from small courier vans to state-of-the-art semi-trailers. The company sees future expansion through acquisitions like Lazzas and innovation as demonstrated in the FPSS trailer, which was launched in December.

CargoWise acquires TransLogix
argoWise, a global company specialised in technology solutions for logistics service providers, has extended its reach into Australia with the acquisition of transport and logistics software business TransLogix. The deal will provide CargoWise with comprehensive domestic transport knowledge to complement its existing international logistics software expertise. According to CargoWise, the combined business will have the capacity to dramatically increase the level of research and development investment, accelerate the creation
of new software capabilities, expand into new geographies and become far more competitive in its core market. This is a critical and significant step in our growth plans, says CargoWise CEO, Richard White. The addition of the TransLogix domestic transport software skills to our platform will not only boost our business, it will give customers all aspects of freight operations door to door, road, rail, air and sea and across borders - from a single global vendor. TransLogixs founder and CEO, Anselm Waterfield, will be assisting
in the integration and transition of the business. This represents a logical strategic step for TransLogix, which has a long and successful track record. As part of CargoWise, we will be able to extend and invest extensively to meet our customers needs with a new, leadingedge platform and technology, Waterfield said. We will be able to harness a unique mix of deep expertise and proven capabilities that meet the needs of our customers. There is an exciting and rewarding future ahead for all stakeholders.
esearchers at the Goodyear Innovation Centre in Akron, Ohio, have found that using soybean oil in the manufacture of tyres can potentially increase tread life by ten per cent and reduce the manufacturers use of petroleum oil by up to 26 million litres each year. In addition, testing at one of Goodyears tyre plants showed improved mixing capabilities in the manufacturing process. The company found that rubber compounds made with soybean oil blend more easily with the silica that is used in making tyres. This can improve manufacturing plant efficiency and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Goodyear is committed to caring for the environment and communities, and the use
of soybean oil is proving to be another way to accomplish this goal, said Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyears Chief Technical Officer. Consumers benefit through improved tread life, Goodyear gains with increased efficiency and energy savings and we all win whenever there is a positive impact on the environment. The research has received support from the agricultural sector, with the United Soybean Board (USB) providing $500,000 towards the project. The United Soybean Board congratulates Goodyear for its commitment to sustainability, said Russ Carpenter, Chairman of USBs New Uses Committee and himself a soybean farmer from New York State. The ongoing discovery of novel applications for soybean oil validates our
commitment to the environment, cultivating a renewable feedstock that reduces carbon emissions and provides a natural replacement for petrochemical alternatives. Goodyear expects consumers to be able to purchase tyres made with soybean oil as early as 2015. Another effort underway at Goodyear to save non-renewable fossil fuel is Goodyears Air Maintenance Technology (AMT). AMT will enable tyres to always remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics. All components of the AMT system will be fully contained within the tyre. The potential benefits of such a system include improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, longer tyre life, enhanced safety and better performance.

Queensland warning sign changes
he Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads has issued Vehicle Standards Instruction (Heavy Vehicle 24.0) to address two anomalies in the design and manufacture of Road Train and Long Vehicle warning signs. The Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 2010 states that these warning signs must be at least 1.2m in width, 250 mm high and have 180mm high black capital letters; these dimensions are supported by part 2 of the Manual of Uniform
Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Traffic Control (TC) signs. However, a previous TC manual labelled a Road Train sign diagram with a lettering height of 160 mm, which was incorrect. Due to this discrepancy, a number of sign manufacturers have produced signs with the 160 mm lettering and some of these signs are currently fitted to vehicles or are available for purchase. The second anomaly identified is in relation to the width of the warning signs. The current Queensland minimum width of 1.2
metres is not consistent with the national standard of 1.02 metres, which is used by the majority of the other states and territories. To address this inconsistency, the Queensland legislation will be amended to reflect the national standard of 1.02 metres. Transport Inspectors and QPS officers have been directed not to issue a Defect or Infringement Notice for signs that have 160mm high lettering and/or that are 1.02 metres wide. This instruction will remain effective for the next five years.
he NSW Government recently received an unsolicited proposal from private company Transurban for a possible F3 to M2 link. The motorway builder, who owns the M2, is planning an 8km tunnel underneath Pennant Hills Rd linking the northern areas and the city a connection motorists have been
waiting for decades. Past studies have pointed to a tunnel under Pennant Hills Rd as being the preferred option, and if built by a private company, it is expected to become a toll road. The NSW Government has committed to commence the development of one of Sydneys major missing
road links in its first term, with the appropriate project to be identified in the State Infrastructure Strategy by Infrastructure NSW, due in September 2012. The missing link projects to be considered by Infrastructure NSW include the M4 Extension, F3 to M2 Link and the M5 East Expansion.
rom 29-31 August, the Australian Road Transport Suppliers Association (ARTSA) will hold a dedicated ADR certification workshop at Lifesaving Victoria, Port Melbourne. The ADR certification course is the first in a series of specialised ARTSA Technical Training workshops. The course will give attendees
a working knowledge of the procedures required to prepare an ADR submission, import vehicles and obtain special permits. Delegates will also come away with a thorough understanding of the State, Federal and local heavy vehicle certification system. Extensive course notes will be provided. The course will be delivered by
Dr Peter Hart, who is principal of Hartwood Consulting and also the current Chairman of ARTSA. He has a twenty-year experience working as a compliance engineer in the heavyvehicle domain. It is not for everyone, but if it is your job or you need to be able to do this in your company, sign up now, says Executive Officer, Rob Perkins.

Fuchs celebrates three-year partnership with Toll Group
pecialist lubricant manufacturer, Fuchs, is celebrating a threeyear lubricant supply partnership with Toll Group, one of Australias largest providers of integrated logistics solutions. Fuchs has been supplying lubricants to Toll Group since June 2008. Ever since, the company provides a complete lubrication solution to service Tolls expansive fleet, including engine, gearbox and differential oils, greases and other service fluids, as well as more specialty fluids, including a spray grease for a large tower crane servicing the Barrow Island supply base operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Fuchs manufactures heavy duty diesel engine oils of the highest quality here in Australia at competitive market pricing and backs it up with a truly national service offer,
says Craig Salan, Toll Fleet National Business Development Manager. As the largest provider of integrated logistics in Australia, and with thousands of companies relying on our services every day across the country, we need to ensure that our trucks stay on the roads. Fuchs helps us achieve this. Toll Group employs 45,000 people across 1200 sites in more than 50 countries. Rob Hughes, Commercial Sales Manager at Fuchs Lubricants (Australasia), says Fuchs was, very proud to be supplying Australias largest logistics and transport operator. Toll has the security of dealing with the worlds largest independent lubricant manufacturer combined with cutting edge R&D allowing product rationalisation across their fleet. Traditionally one of the strengths
of Fuchs is our extensive range of products for all markets we service, however in some instances less is more. Our main heavy duty diesel engine oil offering to trucking fleets, Titan Cargo 15W-40, provides a true multi fleet solution allowing the use of one engine oil across a wide range of heavy vehicles. This includes late model trucks utilising diesel particulate filters to comply with the tough ADR80/3 exhaust emissions standards. The feedback over the past three years from Toll about Titan Cargo 15W-40 has been fantastic. Toll not only use it to service their own road fleet, from their Toll Fleet workshops, but also in their retail repair offer to other trucking fleets from their eleven locations across Australia. Fuchs offers a range of high performance oils for the transport and logistics industry.

Investment in LNG infrastructure
he recent announcements by Shell and Caltex of plans to close their Sydney refineries has emphasised Australias growing dependence upon imported fuels and the volatility of global oil prices. Kleenheat Gas - a division of Westfarmers - has therefore invested in a $137 million Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Kwinana, WA, and this week announced that it has received a $2.5 million grant from the Victorian State Government towards expanding the state wide network of LNG refuelling stations with five new facilities planned for Victoria. Victorian Minister Denis Napthine said that the current LNG infrastructure for commercial vehicles in Victoria was limited and further expansion required significant investment. As a transport fuel, LNG provides us with the opportunity to significantly reduce particulate, CO2 and

nitrogen oxide emissions compared with traditional transport fuels, Dr Napthine said. Wodonga is earmarked as the first site for a potential refuelling station, based on activity in the north-south transport corridor along the Hume Highway and growing customer demand in the area. Kleenheat Gas General Manager,
Graham Smith said the company was delighted at the support shown by the Victorian Government to the project. There are many benefits to using LNG as a transport fuel but a hindrance to greater uptake of the technology has been a lack of refuelling infrastructure, Mr Smith said.

Scania switches on electric truck test
n Europe, Scania and Siemens have devised an electrically-powered experimental truck with overhead current collectors that resemble the trolley buses of the past but with far more advanced and sophisticated controls. Systems in the truck use a laser sensor to detect whether there are overhead cables available and then ensure that the truck follows the cables and that the connectors remain in continuous contact with the power supply. Siemens has built a four kilometre long test track outside of Berlin, Germany. The challenge was not in the building of the overhead cables, but engineering the systems that will allow the truck to be rapidly connected to and from the power supply, for example while overtaking, when the truck is instead powered by its diesel engine. Scania is hoping to demonstrate
the truck on an iron ore mine access road in Northern Sweden once the route is fitted with overhead electrical cables. The Swedish Transport Administration has proposed that overhead cables should initially be placed along a 12 kilometre stretch of the 150 kilometre road in order to gain experience for continued development. In this instance, an overhead conductive power supply is a more realistic solution to using powered rails on the road as the project road is built on bogs and moves up and down. Development of our electrified vehicle has to take place on a step-by-step basis, explained Johan Lindstrom an engineer at Hybrid Systems Development. We are using electrified gearboxes that were developed in hybrid projects, but then a large electric motor must be added to the
power-train in order to drive the 90 tonnes of payload entirely by electricity. This is one of the many different projects at Scania to identify new fuel-saving future alternatives, said Sara Bengtsson, Manager, Scania Public Affairs.
egistrations for new cab/chassis and prime movers during the month of July were almost identical to the same month of 2011, according to official T-Mark figures compiled by peak industry body the Truck Industry Council of Australia. Before some industry executives start wringing their hands and eyeing to jump out of the window, July followed a particularly robust June which was no doubt due to fleets large and small wanting to take advantage of tax benefits for investing in new equipment before June 30. Another 2,175 new units were
registered in July, bringing the year to date total to 14,701, which is up 1,074 or 7.9 per cent when compared with the same period last year. The booming Heavy Duty sector continues to be dominated by Kenworth, with 161 new KWs delivered in July and providing the manufacturer with a 20 per cent market share for the category. Kenworths year to date figures of 1,207 units are around 36 per cent higher than for the same period last year. Overall, Isuzu retains its unassailable lead with a total of 4,092 new
registrations so far in 2012, with 615 of those being added in July. Isuzus overall market share remains at 24 per cent, while they enjoy a 39 per cent share of the Light Duty market and a whopping 43.6 per cent share of the Medium Duty market. Hino remains strong in second overall position with 14.1 per cent of the overall market. Hinos year to date sales are up 14 per cent on the same period in 2011. The supply problems caused by the Japanese natural disasters in 2011 no longer seem to be an issue for most of the Japanese manufacturers.

Philips lower maintenance costs and improve safety
nder the MasterLife umbrella, Philips has now presented both halogen and LED products that have been developed specifically for heavyduty applications. According to Philips, the 24V headlight globes in the program last up to 2.5 times longer with a life of up to 1,800 hours. They include in-built vibration resistance, double coil filament technology and a gas composition designed to reduce tungsten evaporation. In addition, the high performance quartz glass is built to withstand high temperatures and pressure changes. The result is a globe that will deliver reliable lighting in adverse conditions. The range also includes Philips MasterDuty BlueVision headlights, which combine its heavy-duty features with extra white light, rated at 4000K, ideal for lowering eye stress levels on long haul trips. The new MasterLife truck and trailer rear lighting range has been developed by Philips to meet the stringent standards of the transport industries around the world. The program is rugged and durable while meeting the worlds highest quality
standards, ADR and ECE regulations. During development, the Philips LED MasterLife was taken way beyond the standard requirements, making them ideal for any of Australias harshest conditions. Being fully sealed to IP6K9K, these lamps are waterproof and dust proof and the addition of ISO 16750 is specific to electrical and electronic equipment installed on vehicles. Also included in the Philips range is the LED DRL DayLight 8, which is an ultra slim, eight LED unit that runs at full strength for maximum safety during the day and then dims down to park light status when the headlights are turned on at night.
The DRL draws approximately 14 watts, generating 1,000 cd of light at a colour temperature of 6,000K and has an extremely long life. The kit also features an easy to fit plug and play wiring kit that is supposed to lower installation costs for fleets. The Philips MasterLife program with its heavy-duty halogen and advanced LED products gives the transport, agriculture and mining industries the chance to lower maintenance costs and improve safety. Philips are dedicated to continue the development of further high end products in the MasterLife program, says Wayne Blackman, Managing Director of Invision Sales.
SW-based energy company, Snowy Hydro, has taken delivery of 10 Isuzu trucks to assist its dayto-day operations in the Snowy Mountains, Australias highest mountain range. The Snowy Hydro fleet of Isuzus includes one Giga EXY 455, one FSD 850 Long, three FTS 750 4x4 tippers, one FTS 750 4x4 tray truck, two FTS 800 4x4 tippers and
one FTS 800 4x4 tray. We purchased the Giga EXY 455 this year and had it fitted with a drop deck semi-trailer, said Snowy Hydro Logistical Supervisor, Shane Blake. According to Blake, the FSD 850 Long has been fitted with an eight metre steel tray and will assist in transporting machinery. The FSD 850 operates very well on the highways and hills. Its 235 horsepower engine
on a six-speed gearbox is fantastic, Blake said. Snowy Hydro is an electricity generation and retailing company in Australia that owns, manages, and maintains the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme in NSW, which consists of nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 large dams. The company also owns and operates two gas-fired power stations in Victoria.

Mercedes Benz announces driver package
he Mercedes-Benz Actros 2660 now comes in a package specifically designed for Australian conditions to meet the power and performance demands by fleet customers and owner-drivers alike. The Owner Driver Package offers adequate power, an on-road presence with an attractive amount of bling and a list of comfort features demanded by more and more operators involved in long distance haulage. The 15.9-litre turbocharged V8 under the cab delivers 598hp and 2065lb/ft of torque, driving through the Mercedes Powershift 16-speed automated transmission. The power and torque combination combined with the automated box makes life easy for the driver, reducing fatigue and delivering effortless travel, says the manufacturer. The MegaSpace cab interior offers a high level of luxury and the package also includes black leather, while on the outside LED running lights, chrome air intake vents and mirrors, a chrome light bar at the top of the cab and square tanks sets the truck apart from the rest. Not that the package is confined to the 2660 model, it is also available on other models in the Actros prime mover line-up, but it is the flagship truck where it really stands out on the highway. To point out the brands dedication, three senior executives from Mercedes-Benz in Germany recently visited Australia to look at our market and its unique needs. Taking a close look at our market were Matthais Fritz, Manager Sales and Marketing for Australia and New Zealand and Uwe Dettman, an engineer working in
product and marketing management for overseas. Both gentlemen are based at Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart in Germany and they were joined by Worth based Gerald Beuchler, also an engineer, responsible for marketing in other tough truck testing arenas, Africa, the Sudan and Pakistan. The three product management people were keen to investigate Australias conditions and particularly the impact of products designed for this country, looking at support and safety and how best to co-ordinate activities. Australia plays a very big role in developing tough trucks for tough conditions and we are looking at how it impacts on business here, said Gerald Beuchler. Significant product improvements have been implemented to specifically influence our product range including Actros, Axor and Atego. Unimog sales are on the rise here and we are bringing in new models for specific applications such as the Econic for refuse collection.
Actros is continually undergoing improvement with an emphasis on power and performance coupled with safety and fuel economy, he said. Australias special requirements were the focus for Matthais Fritz who pointed out operators here require a product unlike any other produced in the world. There are many special requirements for the Australian market. For starters the need is for a 6x4 truck offering big fuel capacity and the performance to haul higher gross weights with excellent fuel economy. Couple the higher GCMs and definitely higher road speed and the trucks here are totally different to those produced for Europe, he said. A significant part of our product development is truck testing by customers, they are the people who know what they want and everything we do directly affects their business. We want to be number one in Australia and this can only be achieved by offering every solution for road transporters in this country.

he series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scanias development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations. euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some october 2011
governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls. the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt
hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13. euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us, says Bjorn Westman, Scanias engineering Director, head of engine Development. in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy. the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without
Tailored FreighT was born Five and a halF years ago when Two besT maTes made The decision To sTarT Their own TransporT business To service The needs oF melbournes Fresh produce markeTs. and according To iTs Founders, The business has been based on qualiTy raTher Than quanTiTy From The very beginning.
As the son of highly regarded horse trainer John Hawkes of Hawkes Racing, Wayne Hawkes was surrounded by trucks from quite a young age and is now a well-known horse trainer himself. Since I was about 10 years of age, I travelled around the country with Goldners Horse Transport from Adelaide and thats how the trucks started for me, says Wayne. I always said I was going to own the biggest and best float company around but that went by the wayside and I became a horse trainer instead, before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all just marries together really well. The opportunity to start Tailored Freight arose when Waynes long time friend, Todd Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at the Melbourne fruit market. At the time Todd knew everything there is to know about fruit and vegetables so thats basically how it started, says Wayne, who began Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. The business almost started overnight. Tailored Freight began with four employees and now employs 11. Based near the Argosy both of which still have their place in the fleet today. Before long, the demand placed on the two vehicles had increased and there was a need to implement a third vehicle within the first six months of the companys operations. This year another two vehicles were added to the a new supermarket depot was being built on the Albury and Wodonga border and Todds uncle needed to have some freight transported. Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored Freight began its life with two B-doubles, towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision prime mover and a brand new Freightliner
fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five and the total number of trailers up to 11. Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent. And while there has been several opportunities for the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that the companys fleet is geared to service the needs of Victoria. We dont want to be the biggest but we are trying to be the best, he says. It is easy to get too big and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to stay around this sort of number of trucks. Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new. The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished. All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and the business is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. Horse training is no different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs seven days a week so the two work hand in hand, Wayne says.
