Asian Development Bank

Open letter from the Deputy Director General, Budget, Personnel and Management Systems Department, Asian Development Bank

Dear Candidate, Thank you for visiting our recruitment portal. You no doubt have a lot of questions about our recruitment process, pay, perks, promotions, and life in the Philippines. So let me see if I can answer some of them. But first, did you know many employees at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) refer to this place as the best kept secret in the world? That's because it's only after a development professional takes an ADB job that they come to realize the magnitude of opportunities that exist here. It's also because it takes actually living in Manila to appreciate the lifestyle you can have here. "ADB's application process is now fully online" Now for some things about our online application. ADB uses an application template. But don't worry. This doesn't mean your resume won't stand out. The template lets you give us the information we need to speed your application process. You see, ADB receives 10,000 to 12,000 applications a year. Historically we hire only about a 100 but this year we are looking for over 150. To fast-track the screening process we therefore ask for special information most normal CVs leave outthings like an applicant's willingness to travel, current salary, and nationality since ADB only recruits from its 67 member countries.

"So how can your CV make the cut?" ADB looks for experienced people. The key is for you to highlight your work experience. Because at the end of the day, it will all come down to what kind of work you've done, and your track record. It's also a plus if you highlight work performed in an international development setting. Someone who's lived and worked in a developing country and has demonstrated a passion for the development businessthat's who we're ideally looking for. Should you make our shortlist, you'll get a preliminary interview via videoconference. If you pass, you'll be invited for a more formal interview at ADB headquarters. The entire hiring process usually takes three to five months. "Your first appointment will be fixed term." Your initial appointment is for a fixed term of usually three years. This may be extended or converted to a regular open term based on performance and skills. Women are especially encouraged to apply. ADB is also committed to promoting gender equality and encourages the participation of women. As of December 2009, women professionals comprise 28 percent of the bank's international staff. While recruitment remains merit-based, we actively seek more women professional staff. There are 10 professional staff levels at the bank. Levels 1 and 2 are for junior professional positions. Levels 3 and 4 are normal entry-level positions that require varying degrees of specialized knowledge, but come with limited supervisory responsibilities. Levels 5 and 6 are for senior specialist and supervisory positions, 7 and 8 are managerial level. And levels 9 and 10 are for department or office heads and deputy heads of larger departments.

"ADB offers very exciting career opportunities and--competitive pay" ADB offers a competitive compensation package comparable to other multilateral institutions, such as the World Bank and other international financial institutions. Starting salaries are based on the responsibilities of the position and comparability with other staff members who have similar qualifications and experience. Professional staff members receive their salary in U.S. dollars, which are taxexempt unless otherwise imposed by the government of a staff's home country. Local staff members are paid in local currency. A young professional at the entry professional level may earn about $70,000 a year in salary; a department head could earn $220,000 annually. "You'll also enjoy a competitive package of benefits." Staff perks include relocation assistance, rental subsidy, education reimbursement, subsidy for private studies, dependency allowance, home country travel and allowance, various kinds of leave, medical and health benefits, insurance plans, force majeure protection, provisions for contingencies, a staff retirement plan, and a whole lot more. Moreover, working at ADB's magnificent Manila headquarters is a benefit in itself. All professional staff get their own private office and the complex is in the middle of the Ortigas commercial center, only five kilometers from Makati City, the country's financial district. A virtual mini-city covering 6 hectares, ADB headquarters features in-house branches of major commercial banks, travel and insurance agencies, medical and dental clinics, courier services, telecommunications offices, executive dining rooms, laundry services, pharmacy, bookshop, library, convenience store, post office, and commissary.
