    Research Paper Outline

    I) Intro

    A) Thesis: In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” O’Connor uses her characters of

    the Misfit and the grandmother as symbols to convey a theme of the divine

    struggle between good and evil and to present the mysterious ways of the grace of

    God.

    II) Body

    A) Characters as symbols: grandmother, all humanity, misfit, devil, his same

    struggles and opposition to Christ.

    B) Good and evil is a struggle made present in several different places. Within the

    Misfit, the grandmother (who in the end receives grace) and between both of them

    while begging for her life.

    C) Grace – took violence, the imminent threat of death for clarity and realization.

    Anyone can receive no matter how bad. Granny wasn’t the best person but still

    received from God, misfit could once he repents.
