Thereisnoquestionthattheplanetisfacingaseriousclimatechangecrisisthatrequiresleadership fromallnationalgovernmentsincludingourown.Insteadofpositiveeffortstoconfrontthecrisisinan equitableandmorallyacceptableway,wehavewitnessedCanadiangovernmentinactionandattempts toundermineclimatechangepolicy. Someexamplesinclude: CanadaistheonlycountrycomingoutoftheCopenhagenUNclimatenegotiationstoreturn homeandweakenitsemissionreductiontarget,allowingmoreclimatechangepollution. Canadaistheonlycountrytohaveratifiedandthenrenounceditscommitmentsunderthe KyotoProtocol,alegallybindinginternationalagreementourcountrysigned. CanadaallowedthefundingfortheimportantEcoENERGYrenewableenergyprogrammeto expirewhilecontinuingtosubsidizetheoilandgasindustryapproximately$1.4billionannually.

ThefederalgovernmenthasfailedtoregulategreenhousegasemissionsinCanada,inspiteofour internationalcommitmentsandthefederalgovernmentsowninadequatetargets.Theunsustainable paceofdevelopmentofthetarsandswillincreaseCanadasgreenhousegasemissionsbyupto100MT ormoreinthisdecade.Thisdisturbingpatternofinactionandattemptstoundermineclimatechange policybythecurrentCanadianfederalgovernment,coupledwithastaunchdefenceofCanadasfossil fuelindustryshowsthatthisgovernmenthaslostitsmoralcompass. We,asCanadiancivilsocietyareunitedindeclaringthisunacceptable. ThenextmajorroundofUNclimatenegotiationsisNovember28toDecember9,inDurbanSouth Africa.Consistentwiththispattern,Canadahasatrackrecordofactingmoreintheinterestsofbigoil companiesthanCanadiansatUNclimatenegotiations.Theworldneedsanambitious,equitableand bindinginternationalagreementonclimatechange.IfCanadarefusestoleadorfollowinthispursuit, weshouldatleastgetoutoftheway.
