Directions for questions 66 80: Read the passages given below and answer the questions with the most
appropriate choice.

Passage 1

Buddhism is an Eastern religion, but Buddhism is also considered a philosophy, because there's much
more to Buddhism than meeting in a church and praying. Buddhism involves all facets of life. While
other religious traditions are meant to include all life activities as well, they often fail to actively address
that issue in the way that these issues are addressed in Buddhism.

The Buddha teaches that, in order to reach enlightenment, a person has to shun all material objects. That
includes ties with relatives and friends. The seeker of enlightenment must also be aware that the human
senses are deceptive. Being alone, in both body and mind, is the only way to reach true enlightenment for
the Buddhist. There is generally no mention of any god in Buddhism. Some view Buddhism as a
philosophy as opposed to a religious teaching.

There is a strict, prescribed path that must be followed. Despite this, the respect that Buddhist individuals
have for others is still very strong, and the way they shun material issues stops them from being greedy,
envious, covetous, or having other "traits" that would be seen as undesirable in many people. Since this is
the case, they are very able to show a great deal of respect toward their fellow human beings.
The main point of the Buddhist teachings is elimination of suffering. The material world is all suffering,
since people are constantly afraid of things such as death, disease, and old age. The only way to be free
from all this suffering is to work toward a total, deep, inner calm. The Buddhists believe this calm can be
achieved and after it has been, the one who achieves it, when he dies, will not be reincarnated again. They
say this person will gain a blessed calm and he will be reborn no more.

While rebirth is generally thought to be a religious issue, the calmness and lack of fear and suffering that
Buddhists work toward tie into philosophy more strongly than religion. Plato, for example, also
contemplated human nature and the issues behind truth, justice, and peace. Buddhists meditate by, among
other things, keeping to the self, both physically and in the mind. It is said that the body has to go into
SNAP SHOTS 2010 ( 1)

seclusion first, because it makes the detachment of the mind easier. Although meditation is not the same
thing as prayer, devout Buddhists are clearly shunning the everyday things in the search for something
more meaningful, just as both philosophers and religious advocates have done for centuries.

The contemplation and relaxation that often accompanies Buddhism makes many of these people very
calm and tranquil. They look at things from the larger picture, and they don't worry too much about small
things, because they're convinced these things will sort out in the end. The Buddhist would usually rather
examine a scenario from many different angles before he actually make a decision about what the best
thing is to do in any given circumstance. This opinion of tranquilly and examination both of the self
and others helps the Buddhist to show respect to society that he might not otherwise have felt
comfortable with.

No definitive stance is available on whether Buddhism is completely a religion or completely a
philosophy, as it seems to mix traits from both of those areas. A lot of information into the teachings of
Buddha and how to follow him if one wishes to can be found online. However it's classified, Buddhism
brings peace and joy and tranquility to its followers, which is something they value and are willing to take
the time to seek out. That makes it beneficial to those who follow it, regardless of how it's classified.

that hitched a ride inside roaches 140 million years ago, and hasnt left since. Researchers who sequenced
the Blattabacterium genome have found that it converts waste into molecules necessary for a roach to
survive. Every cockroach is a testimony to the power of recycling. Blattabacterium can produce all of the
essential amino acids, various vitamins, and other required compounds from a limited palette of metabolic
substrates, write entomologists in a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.

Researchers have known that cockroaches need the microbes to survive: Kill Blattabacterium with
antibiotics, and the insects die. They also knew that roaches store excess nitrogen one of lifes
essential elements, needed to make proteins, amino acids and DNA inside their bodies, in tiny deposits
of uric acid. But researchers didnt know exactly what became of the uric acid after it was stored, or
precisely what Blattabacterium did. Sequencing the microbes genome made the links clear. The microbe
contains genes that code for enzymes that break down urea and ammonia, the components of uric acid.
Other genes instruct the microbe to take the resulting molecules and use them to make amino acids, repair
cell walls and membranes, and perform other metabolic tasks.

This allows cockroaches to subsist on nitrogen-poor diets, an ability critical to the ecological range and
global distribution of the cockroach species, write the researchers. And what a range it is: There are
nearly 5,000 species of cockroaches, spread on every continent, even Antarctica. At this point in
cockroach evolution, roaches are utterly dependent on Blattabacterium, said Kambhampati. Theyve lost
the ability to produce their own amino acids, like other animals do. They cant live without the bacteria,
he said. That raises the possibility of designing pesticides that somehow interfere with the function of
Blattabacterium, rather than directly killing cockroaches, Kambhampati said. But he doubted that any
such pesticide would work for long before resistance developed, and seemed glum at the prospect of his
research being used to exterminate an animal thats proved so fascinating to study.

Theres about five or six species associated with humans, and unfortunately they give a bad name to the
4,900 species that live quietly in the forest, said Kambhampati.

Passage 3

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody
else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I
have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve oclock at night. It was remarked that the clock
began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.

In consideration of the day and hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse, and some sage women in
the neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me several months before there was any possibility
of our becoming personally acquainted, first, that I was destined to be unlucky in life; and secondly, that I
was privileged to see ghosts and spirits; both these gifts inevitably attaching, as they believed, to all
unlucky infants of either gender, born towards the small hours on a Friday night.

I need say nothing here, on the first head, because nothing can show better than my history whether that
prediction was verified or falsified by the result. On the second branch of the question, I will only remark,
that unless I ran through that part of my inheritance while I was still a baby I have not come into it yet.
But I do not at all complain of having been kept out of this property; and if anybody else should be in the
present enjoyment of it, he is heartily welcome to keep it.

I was born with a caul, which was advertised for sale, in the newspapers, at the low price of fifteen
guineas. Whether seagoing people were short of money about that time, or were short of faith and
preferred cork-jackets, I dont know; all I know is that there was but one solitary bidding, and that was
from an attorney connected with the bill-broking business, who offered two pounds in cash and the
balance in sherry, but declined to be guaranteed from drowning on nay higher bargain. Consequently the
advertisement was withdrawn at a dead lossfor as to sherry, my poor dear mothers own sherry was in
the market thenand ten years afterwards the caul was put up in a raffle down in our part of the country,
to fifty members at half-a-crown a head, the winner to spend five shillings. I was present myself, and I
remember to have felt quite uncomfortable and confused, at a part of myself being disposed of in that
way. The caul was won, I recollect, by an old lady with a hand-basket, who, very reluctantly, produced
from it the stipulated five shillings, all in halfpence, and twopence halfpenny short- as it took an immense
time and a great waste of arithmetic to endeavour without any effect to prove to her. It is a fact which will
be long remembered as remarkable down there, that she was never drowned, but died triumphantly in bed,
at ninety-two. I have understood that it was, to the last, her proudest boast, that she never had been on the
water in her life, except upon a bridge; and that over her tea (to which she was extremely partial) she, to
the last, expressed her indignation at the impiety of mariners and others, who had the presumption to go
meandering about the world. It was in vain to represent to her that some conveniences, tea perhaps
included, resulted from this objectionable practice. She always returned, with greater emphasis and with
an instinctive knowledge of the strength of her objection, Let us have no meandering.

Lie about it. Shobha said None of us attended, if she is speaking truth all the students including
Shobha did not attend the class, but if she did not attend the class she does not speak truth. It means
Shobha is lying. So we can say Shobha did not attend the class.
Sridevi said four of us attended the class, as we know that Shobha did not attended the class only
Shiksha, Ritu, Natasha & Sridevi can attend the class if Sridevi is speaking truth, but if Sridevi is
speaking truth, replies of Shiksha, Ritu & Natasha becomes invalid, which is not possible if they
attended the class, so Sridevi is also lying & we can say she did not attend the class.
Natasha said three of us attended the class, as we know that Shobha & Sridevi did not attended the
class only Shiksha, Ritu & Natasha can attend the class if Natasha is speaking truth, but if Natsha is
speaking truth, replies of Shiksha & Ritu becomes invalid, which is not possible if they attended
the class, so Natasha is also lying & we can say she did not attend the class.
Ritu said two of us attended the class, as we know that Shobha, Sridevi & Natasha did not attended
the class only Shiksha & Ritu can attend the class if Ritu is speaking truth, but if Ritu is speaking
truth, reply of Shiksha becomes invalid, which is not possible if she attended the class, so Ritu is
also lying & we can say she did not attend the class.
Shiksha replied one of us attended the class, if she is lying we can say no one attended the class,
which makes reply of Shobha valid which is not possible. So Shiksha is speaking truth which is
valid that only one student that is Shiksha attended the class.

If we have 100 Lts of solution initially, 99 Lts is water and 1 part is sugar. Now when water
evaporates, sugar remains the same. In the final solution we have 98% water and rest 2% sugar.
Since sugar is still 1 part, the total quantity of the solution must be 50 as its 2% is 1. So solution
reduces to 50 from 100. That means 50% of it evaporates.
