Why were
INTRODUCTION
GREAT OUTDOORS
Snugpak has traded for over thirty years the product of an original cottage industry. In the late 1970s a deep sea diver (doing high risk repair work on oil rigs) saw a gap in the market for American style body warmers that he had seen American co workers wearing to work. Unable to purchase these in the UK he set to work on the designs, making patterns on his kitchen table and learning to sew. He used his free weekends to sell his products on local markets whilst paying the mortgage with his day job. As demand grew he started to take on sewing staff and rented a small unit in the town and started to advertise his products nationally at outdoor exhibitions, the range at this time had expanded into clothing and was about to leap into the pack size sleeping bags that made the company famous. With a technical background it was not long before he approached a local engineer to produce bespoke machinery to reduce costs and save time, doing so brought a new level of automation to the industry. These unique techniques allowed him to competitively bring his ideas of low weight and pack size sleeping bags to a market used to buying oversized equipment. The pioneering Softie insulated range was launched in the early 1980s and was unlike any synthetic sleeping bag on the market. Now firmly established in the camping and outdoor market word started to spread within the military about the superior performance of Snugpak sleeping bags and insulated clothing and it was not long before olive green options of product were widely available. Versions of the Snugpak Softie product have been used in every conflict since the Falklands war and have been specified and used by military forces around the globe including USA, Australia and Europe. Returning to their roots in the 1990s Snugpak developed a synthetic fill deep sea diving insulated suit (for another Great British company Weezle which went on to show that along with the sleeping bags and jackets the insulation will still continue to protect the user if they accidently get wet as they still retain a lot of their structure. This item went on to win the Millennium Product Award for its design. The 2000s have seen the company grow from a strong British manufacturing company into an internationally recognised brand, twice winning the Queens Award for Enterprise in International Trade. 2006 saw the retirement of the original company owner but it was business as usual with the long term company directors seamlessly carrying on the legacy and commitment to affordable British manufacturing. Temperature ratings and weights given throughout the catalogue are for guidance only and in the main are drawn from our thirty years of experience and customer feed back (we are always delighted to hear how you get on!) Our sleeping bags have also been tested by Universities and specialist test institutions in the UK and Europe in accordance with practices laid out by the European Outdoor Group and EN 13537, these figures are available on request but it is important to ensure that you are familiar with the testing procedure and know how to interpret the results particularly their extreme figures. Comfort figures assume you will be sleeping lightly clothed (thermal base layer or PJ's) within a tent on a good quality sleep mat and we would hope that this figure will not disappoint the majority of users. There are many variables involved in a good nights sleep not least fitness and metabolism. If in doubt stick to the comfort figure! All pack sizes are fully compressed (where the product comes supplied with a compression stuff sack) all sleeping bags do, along with many of our new Elite clothing products. The finished product leaves the factory rolled into the stuff sack as we have too many to pack by hand but we would suggest that you stuff your product back into its pack as repeated rolling over the years can lead to stress on the insulation. For long term storage we would advise you not to keep the product fully compressed. As all our figures are predominantly based on customer comment we reserve the right to modify product specifications at any time.

A SLEEPING BAG INSPIRED BY EVOLUTION
SOFTIE CHRYSALIS
The Sleeping bag has evolved to the next level. The Softie Chrysalis sleeping bag gives the versatility to tackle any trip. The key to it's ability is controlling temperature and comfort by being able to transform from a warm, snug sleeping bag, into a cool and spacious sleeping bag. The bag boasts all the features of a traditional sleeping bag but the jumbo zip baffle can be opened out to give much more room within the sleeping bag. Deploying the expander panel reduces the temperature rating slightly, the extra space within the bag allows more air to move around keeping the bag cooler. This temperature management gives your bag much more flexibility allowing you to confidently select a product that can perform in a range of different conditions, so if the temperature drops you zip the sleeping bag tighter and instantly boost the performance. Choosing the right sleeping bag for unpredictable weather is never straightforward but a guaranteed right answer has got one step closer with the Chrysalis range.

Stage 1
At first glance another quality sleeping bag from Snugpak, with chrysalis expander not deployed use it like you would any other sleeping bag.
Stage 2
In normal use the expander works as a super chunky zip baffle sealing the zip from draughts. Two way zips allow venting.
Stage 3
Undo the internal retaining zip and the baffle opens out into a stretchy panel of insulated material.
Stage 4
The chrysalis expander panel allows between 10cm and 22cm extra sleeping space at maximum expansion.
Stage 5
Once completely unzipped the retaining zip then slides into the external zip and reseals, giving a much wider bag.
Stage 6
After only a few moments the transformation is complete, the bag now allows a greater degree of movement.

Snugpaks latest breakthrough in antibacterial technology, this specialist antibacterial and antimicrobial treatment on the outer and linings of all the Travelpak range acts to discourage the growth of bacteria. This results in a reduction of odours and the need for regular laundering of the sleeping bag to keep it smelling fresh, ideal for prolonged tropical travel where temperatures may be high and facilities limited. The Paratex base fabrics wicking properties and high breathability remain unaffected by the bacteria busting treatments. Stage 1
At first glance another quality sleeping bag from Snugpak, with EPS not deployed, use it like you would any other sleeping bag.
Stage 2
In normal use the EPS works as a super chunky zip baffle sealing the zip from draughts. Two way zips allow venting.
One bag. Fits all.
Stage 3
Undo the internal retaining zip and the baffle opens out into a stretchy panel of insulated material.
Stage 4
The EPS expander panel allows between 10 cm and 22cm extra sleeping space at maximum expansion.
The sleeping bag has evolved to the next level. Snugpak EPS (Expander Panel System) bags give versatility to tackle any adventure. The key is its ability to control temperature and comfort by being able to transform from a warm, snug sleeping bag, into a cool and spacious one. The bag boasts all the features of traditional sleeping bags but the jumbo zip baffle can be opened out to give much more room when needed. The extra space within the bag allows more air to move around keeping the bag cooler. This temperature management gives your bag much more flexibility allowing you to confidently select a product that can perform in a range of different conditions, so when the temperature drops, you can zip the sleeping bag tighter and instantly boost its performance.
Stage 5
Once completely unzipped the retaining zip then slides into the external zip and reseals, giving a much wider bag.
Stage 6
After only a few moments the transformation is complete, the bag now allows a greater degree of movement.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Fabrics
THERMAL SUEDE ONE
as the name suggests this fabric is used on the cream of Snugpak's products giving a great balance between aesthetics and performance.
Micro - Tough Lightweight Fabric
Tough, lightweight, highly windproof and water repellent. Heavy duty, closely constructed fabric. Paratex Micro is exceptionally hard wearing but still remains soft to the touch, ideal for outer casings of sleeping bags and jackets where durability is a prerequisite.
Thermal suede is lightweight polyester with a suede finish which uses a combination of yarns with different thicknesses. Microfibre yarns (less than 1 decitex) go on the outside and Macrofibre (3 decitex) go on the inside. The Macro fibre yarns are raised to produce a short pile, similar in feel to Suede. The construction exploits a basic physical property - that water will always move from a low to high surface area or from the Macro to Micro filament yarns, thus moving water from the body towards the outside of the bag.
Lightweight, highly windproof, water repellent fabrics, exceptionally breathable and able to wick moisture away from source, ideal for sleeping bag linings and mid layer insulated clothing.
The inner lining of the Sleeper is 'Supersoft'. A silky smooth fabric specially woven to produce a highly durable and comfortable wicking breathable lining.
The latest breakthrough in antibacterial technology this specialist antibacterial and antimicrobial treatment on the outer and linings of all the Travelpak range acts to discourage the growth of bacteria. This results in a reduction of odours and the need for regular laundering of the sleeping bag to keep it smelling fresh, ideal for prolonged tropical travel where temperatures may be high and facilities limited. The Paratex base fabrics wicking properties and high breathability remain unaffected by the bacteria busting treatments.
The outer of the Travelpak is 'Micro Diamond Ripstop' which provides a lightweight, water repellent casing, produced to Snugpaks exact specification. The mini diamond weave and the lustre of the yarn give a unique look and handle to this bag.
AQUABAR
The breathable Aquabar windproof fabric has superior water resisting properties (the fabric itself has a Hydrostatic head in excess of 10,000mm but water may eventually get through the seams). The fabric is a robust 100D comprising of 94% polyester, 6% elastane keeping you warm, dry and comfortable."
A 100% waterproof fabric (hydrophilic polyurethane coating) with a hydrostatic head in excess of 5000mm (items with a hydrostatic head in excess of 1500mm are generally considered waterproof)
Insulation
Softie- The brand name for the synthetic (Polyester) filling we use for the Softie ranges of sleeping bags. It utilises superfine yarns bound with special resins to produce a luxurious down like feel. It is created from staple yarns which mirror the compositions of natural insulations (as opposed to continuously extruded as in most synthetic fills) a variety of yarn processes are applied to give a more random effect, that is some are curled, some crimped and some are just left as they are. The random nature of the process results in a product that closely resembles the structure of natural insulators and the way they perform. Given all this technology Softie is still easy to care for, washable and retains a lot of its thermal properties when wet. Reflectatherm, this metallised fabric is designed to reflect heat and retain warmth. A highly breathable material, which adds little to the weight or packsize of the product and provides at least 15% additional warmth whilst being undetectable by touch in the sleeping bag or garment.

As part of our continuing development process to keep our synthetic insulation at the leading edge we are pleased to introduce the next generation in sleeping bag technology. Softie Premier uses the same basic principles as traditional Softie but improvements in extrusion technology and binding resins result in a finer, softer and more durable insulation. Both Softie and Softie Premier are exclusive to Snugpak.
Travel Soft is the inner filling of the Travelpak sleeping bags. This insulation is tailored to Snugpak's exact brief. Ultra lightweight high loft fine fibres are used which have excellent compressibility. By design these travel orientated fibres provide less bulk of fill than that of other Snugpak bags, yet are still able to perform very efficiently. The weight of the fibres makes it the perfect fill for adventure travelorientated sleeping bags.
Our Sleeper range are filled with Isofibre' siliconised hollowfibre. The synthetic fibres are structured to trap warm air between tiny cavities in the fibre. When unpacked the 'Hollowfibres' decompress and spring back to gain maximum re-loft.
