A lot of movies are about life, mine are like a slice of cake.

- Alfred Hitchcock Many months ago I wrote a review on the ten worst hindi movies .I had ticked off some well-known movies left, right and centre despite the fact that many people might have probably liked(going by the BO reports)them. So its only fair that I give credit where its due .The following are those movies which have left indelible imprints on many moviegoers for various reasons. On a personal level, they have rekindled my interest in hindi cinema. They may or may not be BO successes but they are perfect examples of how a movie should bein simple words .they are Good cinema. Disclaimer:-I havent expanded much on the storylines since I am sure that most of you would already be aware of them 10.Sarfarosh--An engrossing drama featuring Aamir, Mukesh Rishi and Naseeruddin Shah in principal roles. ACP Rathore is a dutiful officer who aims to unearth the nexus between terrorist organizations and the Chanderpur massacre.A tender love story is also woven in.The movie has such a gripping narrative and keeps you at the edge of your seat.Full marks to John Mathew Mathan for the killer screenplay! The melodious songs dont hinder the flow of the story . All said and done this movie is a text book in filmmaking 9.Kabhi Haan Kabhi naa/Saagar--There are numerous flicks that show the the so called hero as an all-powerful being who can romance the heroine, bash up ten guys at the same time etc.But both KHKN and Saagar showcase the feelings , yearnings and aspirations of the underdog most admirably and thats what endeared me to these two flicks.Sharukh as Sunil and Kamal Hassan as Raja were so true to life in their respective roles. Many could relate with the characters portrayed by them. The supporting cast too shone ,thus making these two movies memorable cinematic experiences . 8.Mr.India-- Hats off to Shekar Kapoor for giving us one of the most priceless fantasy flicks ever!!A disarmingly innocent Anil kapoor and ever enthusiastic Sreedevi lit up the screen with their chemistry. The kids were so cute and thank fully did not have the precocious air as in the case of most filmy brats. The storyline was genuinely different and the quirky side characters like Calendar and the editor with the malfunctioning telephone still linger in my memory. To say that Amrish Puri as Mogambo was convincing would be a gross understatementwith his majestic presence, baritone and ominous air he successfully immortalized the character. 7.Satya-- Mumbai ka king Don Bhiku Matre.ha ha ha.!These were the timeless words intoned by Manoj bajpaihis distinctly menacing mannerisms, frightening aura and unpredictability of emotions made Satya more than just another movie based on the underworld.Urmila and Chakravarthy delivered very natural performances enhancing the mood of the film. The songGoli Maar still gives me goosebumps.Satyais one riveting saga that clearly authenticates RGVs much talked about brilliance. 6.Tere ghar ke saamne-- With creatively picturised songs and incisive dialogues ,this

romantic entertainer never fails to delight me even in the nth watch.Nutan and DevAnand make a lovely pair .An architect falling in love with girl with modern sensibilities may seem to be a run of the mill kind of stuff. But Vijay Anand has translated a seemingly ordinary story to a striking tale which transcends generations thanks to his superb directorial abilities .A must watch for die-hard romantics. 5.Dilwale dulhaniyan le jayenge--DDLJ is a delectable fare which has captured the imaginations of millions of youngsters for obvious reasons.Shah Rukh and Kajol became icons of screen romance through this flick.Peppered with absolutely unforgettable songs like Na jane mere dil ko or Tujhe dekha, this movie also had great locations and flawless choreography too.But the crowning glory was the deft direction by Aditya Chopra(or whoever the ghost director) which lifted the movie from the mundane to the superlative. My favourite scene in the movie would be the one where Simran invites Raj to her wedding but the latter leaves without a reply but gives her a look of infinite meaning. 4.Satyakam-- I couldnt possibly leave out this masterpiece of a movie being a fan of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. His mastery over the psyche of the viewer is just brilliant! Here he mananges to coax good performances from not only the lead actors Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore but also from Asrani , Sanjeev Kumar and the likes. The movie has no lavish set, glamour or item numbers yet manages to charm you with its enamouring simplicity and profound theme .I would recommend this movie to everyone since it unquestionably proves that less is more. 3.Jaane bhi do yaaron--What is life without humour?Contrary to popular belief , tickling the funny bone aint that easy as it seems.but Kundan Shah does just that magnificiently with his directorial debut.Starring two marvellous actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri,JBDY deals with the sensitive subject of rampant corruption.I always watch this movie when I am down in the dumps and it never fails to buck me up .With its witty one-liners,interesting plot and dark, satirical mood ,this movie is one of its kind in Hindi cinema 2.Abhimaan/Anand--This isnt a Hrishikesh Mukherjee special but who can resist choking with emotion when Rajesh khanna lies on the death bed and when Amitabh gives an indifferent reply to a pleading Jaya Meri Zindagi mein kissi ko bhi zaroorat nahi, Samjhi?.While Anandteaches us to be optimistic and radiate positivity ,Abhimaan is all about ego problems between a couple who can neither forgive nor forget each other .Once again, Hrishikesh Mukherjee wields the baton and the result is there for all to see-two cherished classics!! 1.Maqbool--Take a bow Vishal!!You have given us a beautiful yet grim epic which we cinemalovers will rememeber for years to come!...A wonderfully crafted take off on Shakespeares Macbeth, Maqbool scores a full 10/10 in all the departments be it script, screenplay or performances. With a cold-blooded murder and unfaithfulness as a central theme, the movie transports you to a different world altogether.Irfan and Tabu breathe life into their roles as Maqbool and Nimmi but it was Pankaj Kapoor as Abba ji who took the cake.Although his role wasnt the longest , he leaves a lasting impact.

So those were my choices ....I would love to hear any suggestions for improvement and also any details about the above mentioned movies which I may have misquoted .
