On Jan 24, 2012 I had not only the opportunity to address City Council, on the Smart Meter motion, but also to view and observe the Council members in action. It was a regular scheduled council meeting. I was most disappointed in Norm Brigden and Clara Norgaard, who stated that as they were new to council they had not been present on previous presentations by BC Hydro and the group opposed to smart meters, that they were not comfortable in being asked to vote on a moratorium motion without some knowledge on the subject. The notice of motion has been on the books since last October. These council members have had more than adequate time to gather information on this subject if they were at all interested. They knew that the motion was on the agenda for Jan. 24, 2012. They came to the council meeting ill prepared and wanting to be spoon fed. If they felt inadequate to make a decision in this regard, they should have abstained and not voted. Trusting that this performance that night isn't a sign of things to come. TNRD will be hosting Free Dump Days throughout the regional district this spring. In the Nicola Valley, it will be held on Sunday, April 15 at the Lower Nicola landfill. Residents may bring in up to $20 worth of waste for free. Regular tipping fees apply to waste over the $20 limit. This event is for residential customers only, regular tipping fees apply to commercial, business & municipal loads. Merritts household hazardous waste round-up will be held Saturday, April 14th. It gives residents an opportunity to safely and properly dispose of hazardous materials banned from disposal in landfills. Evidently Ok/Coq MP Dan Albas parents were on the Costa Concordia just hours before it sank. Charles Albas said that it was one of the most beautiful ships he'd ever been on and was in shock to learn that it sunk the evening he and his wife Valarie were in port.
