Creekside Computer Services is the
winner of the Winterfest 2012 cutout
snowman display contest. Congratula-
tions. If you had a chance to walk by
the display in their window not only
would you have seen a snowman keep-
ing cool with a fan and by eating an ice
cream cone; but also, you would have
seen a melting snowman. Plus, to top
off their display they had songs play-
ing that all were related to snowmen.
Thank you Jennifer and Floyd Lind-
sey of Creekside Computer Service for
making a stroll in downtown Howard
City so fun and inviting.
A huge THANKS to all who partici-
pated. We hope you had a chance to see
the entries at the following businesses:
BP Station, Creekside Computers, Dro-
ski Insurance Agency, Firstbank, Kids
Korner Child Care Center, Reynolds
Township Hall, the River Valley News
Shopper, Route M-82 Salon, and the
Village offces.
If you missed them, look on the
chamber website; www.panhandle-
chamber.com and/or the Village of
Howard City website; howardcity.org.
All snowmen cutout displays have been
posted.
A special thank you goes out to our
judges, the Howard City Harvest Festi-
val Queen and her court. Kailey Grospin,
our Queen and her court, Kaitlyn Geers
and Angela Gray said it was diffcult to
choose a winner because everyone had
such great ideas. They enjoyed being a
part of 2012 Winterfest and the snow-
man cutout display contest.
Thank you to all of you for being a
part of the Winterfest of 2012.

Heating Credits now
being processed
LANSING The Michigan Public Ser-
vice Commission (MPSC) today noted that
the Michigan Department of Treasury is now
processing Michigan Home Heating Credits
(HHC) for the 2011 tax year. The credit assists
low-income customers with winter energy
bills.
Instruction booklets and forms have been
mailed out by the Department of Treasury.
More than 75 percent of the HHCs were e-fled
in 2011. For those people who fle a tax return,
the Michigan Department of Treasury encour-
ages them to e-fle their returns because it
speeds processing and reduces errors for the
HHC. To fnd an authorized e-fle provider and
information on free e-fle services, visit Trea-
surys website: MIFastFile.org.
Individuals may apply for the HHC even if
they do not fle a tax return.
Forms and instructional materials are
available on the Internet at michigan.gov/in-

Setting the record straight
TO THE EDITOR:
So much misleading information appears in
the letters from John Powell and his supporters,
it is diffcult to know where to begin to address
the errors. Nevertheless, Reynolds Township
residents, property owners and business owners
can rest assured that neither i, nor any Reynolds
Township offcial, have declared war on any-
one. We are not going after anyones personal
property rights, nor attempting to put otherwise
reasonable and lawful enterprises out of busi-
ness due to zoning violations. A Michigan town-
ship cannot put someone out of business if they
are operating lawfully. it is not legally possible
to issue and successfully pursue a zoning cita-
tion if there is no violation of the law.
Mr. Powells zoning violations commenced
before I took offce. With regard to Mr. Powells
south parcel on M-82, he began industrial opera-
tions on that parcel in violation of the Townships
Zoning ordinance and without the appropriate
permits. furthermore, when he purchased that
property in 2008, he failed to fle the required
property transfer affdavit as required by law and
it took over two years for Mr. Powell to fnally
fle that affdavit and only then after the Town-
ship Assessors insistence. Mr. Powell moved his
industrial sifting, septic, material storage and
excavating business to that south parcel without
the appropriate zoning approvals.
Mr. Powell stated that neither of the past
two Supervisors had an issue with doing this.
i have no idea what the previous Township Su-
pervisors told Mr. Powell, but no Township off-
cial can waive zoning regulations. The Township
has spent countless hours and taxpayer dollars
on Mr. Powells issues. The Township has given
Mr. Powell concrete reasons and documentation
from professional planners and attorneys indi-
cating why his residential property could not be
rezoned for industrial use. The Township has at-
tempted to work with Mr. Powell on numerous
occasions. Mr. Powell simply wanted to do it his
own way and to have 100 percent of his requests
approved, regardless of the law.
The Township was left with no practical al-
ternative than to issue citations. At virtually the
last minute before the court hearing, Mr. Powell
agreed to a court order in which he admitted re-
sponsibility to one civil infraction for violation of
the Zoning ordinance and the Township agreed
to drop the other fve citations and waive the
fnes and costs so long as compliance occurred.
A copy of that court order and other relevant
documents can be reviewed at the Reynolds
Township offces. The Township Board agreed to
the compromise court order. The Township did
not have to do thatit could have simply let the
court decide all of the issues, with the likely out-
come that the Township would have prevailed
on all issues.
Reynolds Township has made reasonable at-
tempts to be cooperative with Mr. Powell. How-
ever, Mr. Powell must follow the same laws and
ordinances that are required for every citizen of
Reynolds Township.
These are my opinions as Reynolds Town-
ship Supervisor. Nevertheless, i believe it is im-
portant to set the record straight regarding the
Powell issues.

On Sunday, January 8 the Michigan School Band and
Orchestra Associations District Seven held its annual
Middle School Honors Band and Orchestra performances.
The performances took place in the Sparta High School
auditorium and included band and orchestra students from
almost all of the districts middle schools.
Students rehearsed in sections on the Wednesday evening
before the concert, then rehearsed all day on Saturday and
for several hours on Sunday before the performances.
The guest conductor for band was Roger Weyersburg. Mr.
Weyersburg taught instrumental and vocal music for 30
years in the Ovid-Elsie school district, conducts annually
at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, leads the Michigan Lions
All-State band and is an MSBOA adjudicator and clinician.
Roger also performs with various groups in Michigan as
a trombonist. The Orchestra conductor was Mr. Rodney
Page. Mr. Page taught for many years at St. John high school and is a frequent guest conductor and clinician
for orchestras throughout Michigan.
Congratulations to the ve students for their nomination and selection to the band.
Tri County Middle School was represented by (left to
right): Katelyn Ketelaar, Tucker Nielson, Noelle Olsen,
Erin Snyder, (Roger Weyersburg, guest band conductor)
and Lily Olsen.

Mrs. Malmo's third grade class read ve Roald Dahl books this
Fall. They read George's Marvelous Medicine, The BFG, Willie
Wonka's Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and ESIOTROT and then
celebrated with an all day Roald Dahl party. The class dressed up
as characters from the books. Willie Wonka arrived along with
a few Matildas, some Sophies, Ale the tortoise, Miss Honey,
Veruca Salt, and some Big Friendly Giants. Miss Trunchbull kept
everyone in line with her riding crop and mean temper. Many of
the students created games and puzzles based on the books they
played. They were treated to chocolate bars with golden tickets
inside, that when turned in, will be good for a homework-free
week! Everyone got Dahlathon medals and certicates. There are
many more of his books to discover. Thanks Mr. Dahl for all your
books and your scrumdillyumptious imagination.

Pay Attention to Those Who Care
Someone sent me this little quiz. Read the six questions. Think about the answers, but do not try too
hard if you do not know the answers immediately.
1. Name the ve wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last ve Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last ve winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decades worth of World Series winners.
Did you know the answers to any of those? I only knew two. The point is this: very few of us remember
the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their elds. But the
applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certicates are buried with
their owners.
Heres another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who helped you in your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difcult time.
3. Name ve people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!
5. Think of ve people you enjoy spending time with.
Was that easier? What is the lesson?
The people who make a real difference in your life are not the ones with the most
credentialsthe most money...or the most awards.
They simply are the ones who care the most.
Do not chase the stars and the famous, but pay attention to those who care.

Calls for help. In that rst, late winter storm a
couple weeks ago, no vehicle was safe from the
treachery of the icy roads, or, more likely, the
tom-foolishness of other reckless drivers. The
calls came in. My car got totaled. How can I get
the claims adjuster out here sooner so I can get my
insurance money to buy another car?
Dont rush the process. Claims adjusters were
barraged with calls. And while yours might be
the most important to you, to the adjuster whos
suddenly driving all over the countryside visiting
car lots in the freezing cold, yours is not a special
claim. Any attempt to rush the process only
annoys both of you. Calmly call and inquire about
the adjusters schedule to visit you. Then wait
patiently. Call back once a week.
Her offer is her hope. The adjusters rst job is to
determine what your cars worth. Armed with her
evaluation and her companys authority to make
you an offer to settle, shell call with her offer.
Shell explain why she thinks its a fair offer.
She hopes youll take her offer. Note, its only an
offer.
Should you take the offer? No. You should
Thank her for her promptness,
Ask her to send you any paperwork she has
that shows why she thinks your car was
worth the amount of her offer, and
Tell her youll get back to her.
Why? Because you need a new car, wanted the
money yesterday, and are anxious to buy that car
you found at Local Motors thats perfect, that
you dont want Mr. Local to sell before you get
your insurance money to buy it. In other words,
youre hungry for the money. And hunger clouds
our judgment. The claims adjuster knows it.
Remember, the insurance companys rst priority
is to make money for itself. If they can lowball
the value of your car, they will save money on the
payout to you. Time to take a breath.
Do your homework. Next, do these three things:
Visit Local Motors and get a written estimate of
the value of your car, with the same make, model,
mileage, year, in the same shape, with the same
options and features. Clip all ads out of the want
ad section of the newspaper from your biggest
nearby city for the same car (make, model, year,
etc.) which are being sold by owner. And print out
all pages from autotrader.com and edmunds.com
for cars like yours being sold in all of Michigan.
Using all of that data, decide what youd have to
pay to buy your car in Michigan, today, if it was
still running. Likely the for-sale-by-owner cars
will be the highest valued.
Make your counteroffer. Maybe the adjuster
sent you the information you asked for. Check it
out. Then call the adjuster with your answer. If
she was being pretty fair, accept her offer. If she
was lowballing you, be nice, tell her how much
money you want, and that youll be sending her
your own information, showing how you reached
that counteroffer.
See the money. Once you made a counter-offer, the
adjuster knew you were a thorough and educated
consumer. It might take a few calls back and forth,
but youll be much happier with the check you get
because you did your homework. If the adjuster
was being fair all along, youll be happy to leave
your business with that company too. Otherwise,
itll be time to shop around.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall
By Tresa Erickson
Most people familiar with interior design know the value of mirrors. When placed right, they can
make a room appear larger and lighter than it really is. A mirror placed across from a window in
a small, narrow room, for example, can open it up. Mirrors can be used in other ways to play up
the features of a room.
Designers employ all kinds of techniques with mirrors. Sometimes, they angle mirrors toward
each to break up the reection and allow for a unique mosaic affect. Other times, they arrange
them in a specic order for a comforting repetitious effect.
The size and shape of mirrors might dictate their use. An assortment of round mirrors in various
sizes on a wall might make for quite an impressive display, whereas a series of long, narrow
mirrors on a wall might elongate it. When turned horizontally, those same long, narrow mirrors
might make the wall appear wider.
Mirrors can be used to disguise aws and highlight objects as well. Dresser top scratched?
No problem. Have a piece of mirror cut to t it, and voila, youve got a great place to store all
of those crystal perfume bottles. The mirrored top will reect light onto the crystal, creating a
dazzling effect. Bookshelves seem a little drab? Not with mirrored backs. Hang or glue some
mirrors to the backs of your bookshelves for depth and whatever you have tucked inside will
come alive.
Mirrors do not have to be new or in perfect condition to create an interesting effect. Distressed
mirrors work great in many design styles from Old World to country cottage, while convex mir-
rors can add interest to more modern rooms.
Mirrors can do wonders for any dcor. Just make sure you use them appropriately. Remem-
ber, mirrors reect, so be careful of their placement. Dont hang one across from something
youd rather people not notice, like the litterbox or coat closet. Watch out for glare as well. While
a mirror placed across from your picture window might bounce back a lot of light, it might also
create glare on the TV screen.

With Poison Prevention Week
starting, theres no better time
to see what kind of hazards your
home might pose to children
and pets. Get down on all fours
to view your home from your
childs or pets perspective and
take note of any hazards you
see. Then take the corrective
measures necessary, and while
youre at it, make sure you follow
these basic tips:
Keep all medications, chemicals and
other toxic products in their original
labeled containers.
Never refer to medication as candy.
Use toxic products as intended and
secure them tightly after use.
Store toxic products out of the reach
of children and pets, preferably in a
locked cabinet.
Place all toxic plants out of the
reach of young children and pets.
Teach children about poison
prevention. The more they know
about the dangers lurking, the less
likely they are to experience trouble.

How safe is your home?

How safe is your home?
How safe is your home?
22 RIVERVALLEYNEWSSHOPPERMONDAY,January30,2012
22
My, how time has own. Seems like only yesterday you were pack-
ing up for the big move to your house. Now your children are all
grown, some with children of their own, and the house you have
cherished for so long seems big and empty. The time has come for
you to downsize.
Downsizing typically involves moving to a smaller home, which cre-
ates a number of positives. Depending upon how much you still owe
on your current house, you may make enough of a prot to put down
a substantial down payment on a smaller house or buy it outright.
Either way, you will have more cash in your pocket for other things.
With less square footage, you will have lower utility bills and make
fewer purchases, allowing you to save even more money. You will
also have less to care for, easing stress and freeing up time.
With downsizing also come some negatives, of course. You may not
have the room for out-of-town guests, much less your possessions.
Chances are everything in your home right now will not t in your
new home. If you own a lot youre partial to, getting rid of some of
it may not be easy. Ask your family and friends to help. They might
even be willing to take some items off your hands. Wouldnt you
rather see your daughter using your mothers china now than mak-
ing her wait until after your death? The same goes for your phono-
graph. It would look lovely in your friends parlor, and theyre even
willing to pay you what its worth.
When sorting through your possessions, start in the rooms you use
the least to avoid having to walk through an obstacle course for days
on end. Move from large pieces to small and color-code everything
according to whether you want to keep it, give it to a family member
or friend, donate it to charity or sell it. With heirlooms youre hand-
ing down, write down any signicant details or memories associated
with them for future owners. With heirlooms youre selling, bring in
an expert to assess them and recommend the best method of sale.
Sifting through your possessions will take time. Dont rush the pro-
cess, or you could end up making decisions you regret. Go through
everything, old cards, letters, papers and more, and keep whats im-
portant to you. If youre holding onto items for your grown kids, dont.
Let them know what you have and nd out what they want you to do
with it. Do not take it to your new home. You need all of the space
there for your own things. Give your children a time frame to retrieve
the items they want or donate them to charity.
Paring down wont be easy, but it can be done. Be rm in what you
want to keep and bequeath items only when ready. Dont succumb
to the pressure of friends and family. Its your memories, so do with
them as you wish. Just dont go overboard, or youll end up feeling
like a can of sardines in your new home. Remember, youre down-
sizing to free up time and money and reduce stress. The more stuff
you have, the less likely that is to happen.

Oil Or
Latex?
By Tresa Erickson
Your kitchen cabinets have
seen better days, and while
you would like to change
them, you can't afford to do
so at this time. You're going to
paint them instead, and some
friends have suggested you
use oil paint, while others have
suggested you use latex paint.
You have worked with latex
paint but not oil paint. What
is the difference between the
two?
Oil-based paint offers many ad-
vantages. It goes on smoothly
and covers a lot. It shrinks very
little, making sanding between
coats unnecessary. It dries
slowly, giving you more time to
work. It produces a shiny, hard
coat that is tough to penetrate
and holds up well in high-traf-
c areas.
There are some drawbacks to
using oil-based paint. It has a
strong odor, making it difcult
to work with for some people.
Although hard, it will crack
over time. It may also fade and
yellow. Oil-based paint can be
difcult to clean up. You must
use solvents. It is also hazard-
ous and must be disposed of
properly.
Latex also offers many advan-
tages. It is widely available and
is better for the environment
altogether. It dries quickly and
doesn't yellow. It is also easy to
clean up with soap and water.
It does swell, however, mak-
ing sanding between coats on
wood essential.
For walls, many experts recom-
mend latex. For wood, metal
and other surfaces, oil-based
might be better. The choice is
yours. Research the two op-
tions further, discuss the mat-
ter with the professionals and
make your choice carefully.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless,
tasteless and poisonous gas that
is given off by the insufcient
burning of natural gas and other
substances containing carbon. It
can be generated from heating
systems that use natural gas, as
well as gasoline-powered vehi-
cles, charcoal grills or any device
that burns gasoline, oil, wood,
kerosene or charcoal. The danger
in exposure to carbon monoxide
is the effect on the oxygen levels
in the body. Carbon monoxide
displaces the oxygen in blood and
deprives vital organs like the heart and brain of it. Prevention is the key to
keeping you and your family safe from carbon monoxide exposure.
To avoid carbon monoxide exposure, choose and install appliances that
are properly vented. Most new appliances are designed to be carbon
monoxide safe, but they have to be installed correctly. If you are a do-it-
yourselfer, make sure these appliances are properly vented to the out-
side. If someone else is installing them, make sure they are certied to do
so. As for existing appliances that burn natural gas or any other carbon
monoxide producing material, make sure they are serviced regularly and
operating correctly.
There are few things regarding carbon monoxide that most of us have
done that we shouldnt. Never let your car idle in the garage, even with
the garage door open. Carbon monoxide can build up quickl y, and if your
garage is connected to your home, the fumes will also invade your living
area. Never use a gas oven to heat your home. Never run a kerosene
space heater in a non-ventilated room. Finally, never ignore the symptoms
of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning depend on the amount of
exposure. Low levels of exposure may cause a mild headache or mild
nausea. Moderate exposure can cause dizziness, headache, nausea and
light headedness. High levels of exposure can be fatal within minutes. The
most important thing to do for someone who has been exposed to carbon
monoxide is to get them fresh air, preferably outside. The next thing to do
is to call 911 for assistance.
Carbon monoxide detectors are available and can be installed as easily
as a smoke detector. However, having one or more of these in your home
is not an excuse for failing to properly maintain your carbon monoxide
producing appliances.
There are many things that will do us or our family harm if left unchecked.
Carbon monoxide is one of them. However, with proper maintenance of
appliances, installation of carbon monoxide detectors and common sense,
we can keep ourselves and the ones we love safe.

Thanks to the good Lord, all of us (including the dog) got out of the
house unharmed from our house re on Christmas Day. We would
like to say Thanks to our Family, Friends, Neighbors and most im-
portant the Dog. Your offers of help, your cards of encouragement,
your acts of kindness, the good advice we were given when our minds
were numb, the gifts of money, warm clothes and hot coffee. Cell
phones were used and given, instructions to make and take calls,
small note pads for notes & numbers. Warm houses to go to, your
vehicles to drive, and your help with removing things that were left.
For all these things we are very thankful, and we are very blessed for
the wonderful support from all of you. And to all the reghters, you
went above and beyond to ght this re and helping save what we
could, we Thank You.
Thanks for Caring & Sharing
