CHASTITY, COMMENDABLE ON ACCOUNT O F T H E COMBATS B Y W H I C H I T I S P R E S E R V E D , AND R E C O V E R E D W H E N LOST T h e r e a r e few p e r s o n s w h o h a v e p r e s e r v e d t h e i r chastity, especially in t h e i r y o u t h , save by hard, wearisome and, sometimes, uninterr u p t e d conflicts. The cause of this lies in t h e n a t u r e of m a n , in h i s r e l a t i o n s to himself, in his r e l a t i o n s to t h e w o r l d . yield to the affections of the heart, than he that is chaste? Bright is his. eye, not darkened by passionhealthy his heart, not corrupted by sensuality. No wonder, then, that he thinks of sublime things, undertakes and accomplishes them! True strength of mind is seen in endurance. It is not without continual combat, that the chaste youth preserves his chastity; not without incessant watchings, prayers, and struggles, does he remain victor over the flesh, the world, and the devil. And the constancy acquired in the preservation of this particular virtue, he frequently exercises in every thing that he undertakes for God, and the salvation of his soul, the accomplishment of which he considers a duty of honour. Look at the majestic oak. Its roots strike deep into the earth. Healthy in w o o d and bark, it spreads its branches heavenward. It has braved centuries; and even w h e n h e w n down, it gives strength and solidity to every article made from its wood. O Youth, be like the oak! Shun the enervating influence of vice; become stronger and stronger; resolutely proceed upon the path of virtue. Defy evil, whenever you m e e t it. If the occasion to do something great present itself to you, examine itask God for His help, commence the work, and persevere.
