*Lao People's Democratic Republic Pamahalaan: Unitary Communist Wika: Lao In the Lao language, the country's name is "Muang Lao" ( ) or "Pathet Lao" ( ), both of which literally mean "Lao Country". The French, who united the three separate Lao kingdoms in French Indochina in 1893, named the country as the plural of the ethnic group (in French, the final "s" at the end of a word is usually silent, thus it would be also be pronounced "Lao").

The word Thai ( ) is commonly believed, derived from the word Tai ( ) meaning "freedom" in the Thai language; it is, however, the name of an ethnic group from the central plains (the Thai people). A famous Thai scholar argued that Tai ( ) simply means "people" or "human being" since his investigation shows that in some rural areas the word "Tai" was used instead of the usual Thai word "khon" () for people.

The name Indonesia derives from the Latin and Greek Indus, and the Greek nsos, meaning "island".[8] The name dates to the 18th century, far predating the formation of independent Indonesia.[9] In 1850, George Windsor Earl, an English ethnologist, proposed the terms Indunesians and, his preference, Malayunesians for the inhabitants of the "Indian Archipelago or Malayan Archipelago".[10] In the same publication, a student of Earl's, James Richardson Logan, used Indonesia as a synonym for Indian Archipelago.[11] However, Dutch academics writing in East Indies publications were reluctant to use Indonesia. Instead, they used the terms Malay Archipelago (Maleische Archipel); the Netherlands East Indies (Nederlandsch Oost Indi), popularly Indi; the East (de Oost); and Insulinde.[12]

The word Melayu is thought to derive from the Sanskrit term Malaiur or Malayadvipa, which can be translated as "land of mountains", the word used by ancient Indian traders when referring to the Malay Peninsula.Other theories propose it originates from the Tamil word Malai, meaning "mountain".[16] The term was later used as the name of the Melayu Kingdom, which existed between the 7th and 13th centuries on Sumatra.
