INTRODUCTION: Solve: Finish the pattern: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, _____, _______, _______ Math Message: y Open Journals to p. 157 and compete part A. y How did you find the answers to facts you haven t memorized yet? What strategies did you use? y Some of you may have used the Array Diagram. Draw arrays on the board. Make them all square numbers. Practice multiplying with them. y What do you notice about these numbers? y (they re multiplied by themselves). They are SQUARE numbers (write on the board) Then put up NON square arrays. y Not square number y Not square products. y The only PRODUCTS that are square are the products on your math journal. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rotation 1 Objective: Be able to use arrays to help them solve multiplication problems. y Problems 1 and 2: Model and have them copy y Problem 3: They do it y Problem 4: send them to do it on their own and rotate.

Rotation 2 Objective: Notice the pattern between square numbers and non-square numbers. y Problem 1: model y Problem 2 and 3: do together y DISCUSS: What do you notice about the numbers and the shapes? y Problem 4: send them on their own to do it and rotate Rotation 3 Objective: Notice pattern between NON square numbers y They do problems 1-6 y Look at number 7 together. Read it aloud. y Start them off, (show first 2) then let them do it. y Answer: If you subtract each product from the next larger product, each difference is 2 more than the previous difference.
