is a practical martial art that is a mix of Judo Throws, Karate Strikes, Aikido Joint Locks & Pressure points, as well as ground-fighting techniques. Spring/Summer 2012

The Uxbridge Squash Club (UxSquash)

Dave & Cheri Harrison Tournament Feb. 21-25, 2012 (open to all comers) Annual Club Championships & AGM - spring, usually late April Apr. 10-21, 2012 (league players only) & AGM will normally held at the end of this tournament

Squash is a great sport for people of all ages from youth to senior. It improves hand/eye co-ordination, agility and flexibility and provides a good cardio workout and fantastic stress relief - you can hit that little ball as hard as you want! The Uxbridge Squash Club is not-for-profit, run by volunteers and has operated in our community for well over 30 years at Uxpool where there is now one International-style court. Adult Club members (aged 16+) play one another in box leagues: currently they can choose to play up to three scheduled matches weekly, on MondayTuesday evenings, Wednesday-Thursday evenings and/or Saturday daytime. Regular season play runs from September through April. The Club also normally holds three tournaments each year: fall (usually November), winter (usually February) and at the end of the season in April. The fall and winter tournaments are open to nonClub players, but the season championships in April are for Club members only.

The Squash Club encourages youth participation (ages 10-16). Depending on interest they will offer free services such as adult supervision of youth play, occasional youth clinics throughout the season. Junior players are considered junior Club members and are invited to play in all Club tournaments free of charge. Junior play is subject to facility fees. Adult Squash Club members must hold a Full Fitness Facility Membership at Uxpool; this includes swimming privileges. Adult Squash Club members pay an additional $20 annual fee to the Club to cover incidental cost such as tournament snacks and prizes. Club non-member adults playing in Club tournaments will be asked to pay a small tournament entry fee, usually $5. Non-Club members can play occasional matches (including tournaments) at no extra charge if they hold a Facility membership or by paying court fees at Uxpool.

Beginners and occasional players are welcome!

The pool has spare goggles, racquets and balls that can be borrowed for occasional use. All players must wear goggles and non-marking shoes at all times on the court. No outdoor or marking shoes are allowed - they will damage the court floor. For safety, players without goggles will be asked to leave the court. To book the court for non-league play and/or to enquire about Adult or Junior Facility Membership and/or court fees, call Uxpool at 905852-7831.

Heritage Uxbridge
Heritage Uxbridge is a committee commissioned by the Uxbridge
Council to act as an advocate for the preservation and conservation of heritage properties in the township. The committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who carry out a number of on-going responsibilities throughout the year, working with the community and the township members assisting with and advising in matters related to heritage and cultural aspects. In past years, the committee has developed and organized guided tours, and published articles and maps that help promote Uxbridge's cultural heritage. Further, the committee continues to maintain a close watch on the Pickering Airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect any properties of historical value found within that area. It also produced a Heritage District Sign By-law to help promote a heritage 'look' in the downtown district and continues to recognize individual's homes of heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program. Last year, an award called the 'Heritage Appreciation Award' was established by the committee to recognize those individuals for taking the initiative and action to preserve our past. Three recipients, Strawberry Threads, Rutledge's Jewellers and the Tin Mill have received this award. This year we will continue to award local area Heritage Farms. The Heritage Sign By-law Guidelines is used as a reference to determine award recipients, and the boundaries include the entire township. Information about how to receive this award along with ideas on improving building facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage appearance, can be found in the Heritage Uxbridge Sign Guidelines at the Township's office. 2011 will also see the committee involved with the Downtown revitalization, project and those plans and policies that will guide the township with its development of the downtown core. Further, the committee continues to maintain a close watch on the Pickering Airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect any properties of historical and cultural value found within that area. Last year the community of Leaskdale and the Lucy Maud Montgomery Society saw themselves proud, as its original Presbyterian church known mainly for its connection to Lucy Maud, received a Provincial Heritage designation. If you would like more information about this committee or have any questions about Heritage Uxbridge heritage, please contact Pat Mikuse at prmikuse@sympatico.ca or Robin Coombs at rcoombs@powergate.ca

SHOWER BEFORE SWIMMING

A thorough shower before you enter the pool will help keep the water clean for your swimming enjoyment.

ADMISSION STANDARDS FOR PUBLIC POOLS

"Admission Standards for Public Pools" were developed by the Office of the Coroner of Ontario to assist Lifeguards and Assistant Lifeguards in maintaining adequate surveillance over the whereabouts and the activities of young bathers while they are inside the pool enclosure. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care strongly support these recommendations for the purpose of preventing injuries and fatalities. 1. Children 5 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 12 years of age or older. The parent or guardian is responsible for their direct supervision and must be in the water and within arms reach of the child(ren) at all times. 2. Children 6 to 9 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 12 years of age or older. The parent or guardian is responsible for direct supervision & must be in the water. If the child can swim and pass a facility swim test, the parent or guardian does not have to remain within arms reach of the child, however, must remain in the pool enclosure to provide supervision of the children and remain in visual contact. 3. Children 10 years and older may swim without adult accompaniment.

STROLLERS
Strollers are not permitted in the change rooms or on deck. If you require one, please ask at the office and one will be provided for you (Limited strollers available)

FOOD AND BEVERAGES

Food and beverages are NOT permitted on the pool deck or in the change rooms. The only exception made is non breakable water bottles.

TO DIAPER OR NOT TO DIAPER

We ask that disposable diapers are not worn into the swimming pool. We request that those not toilet trained wear a swim diaper that can be purchased at your local drug store or snug fitting plastic plants under their bathing suit.

POOL FOUL/POWER FAILURE/MAINTENANCE CLOSURE

The pool may close at an inopportune time due to a pool fouling, power failure, or mechanical/maintenance problem. When this occurs, instructors will use the time to focus on water safety components of instructional programs. Cancelled lessons cannot be made up and swim tickets will be issued.

FACILITY SWIM TEST:

SHALLOW: swimmers must be able to swim one (1) width . Completed Swim Kids 3 or equivalent. DEEP END:To swim in the deep end, swimmers must be able to swim two (2) widths or one (1) length of the pool successfully

PROGRAM CANCELLATION/REVISIONS
Sometimes excellent programs, with super instructors are cancelled when too many people wait until the last minute to register. Our programs are based upon a cost recovery basis and we need a minimum number of participants registered before a camp/class can go on. A full credit will be provided if the Recreation Department is responsible for program cancellations or changes. The Town of Uxbridge reserves the right to cancel or revise any program in accordance with participant requirements.

RETURNED CHEQUES

AGE OF PARTICIPANTS
Most of our programs/swimming lessons are designed for a specific age group. All participants must be the required age as outlined in the guide as of the completion date of the program/lesson. Camp programs are based on age of participant in the current calendar year.

Severe weather conditions are taken into consideration when planning programs. Programs will be altered if the need arises. Indoor facilities are usually available for all programs unless otherwise specified.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR
The Town of Uxbridge endeavors to provide the highest level of safety and enjoyment to all participants and staff members for the duration of its leisure programs/aquatic lessons. These guidelines have been developed to ensure that all involved are aware of acceptable behavior. Coarse language, bullying, vandalism, physical and aggressive behavior will be recorded, reported and may result in the removal from the leisure program/aquatic lesson or facility.

LATE PICK UP FEE POLICY

Extended care is available for camp programs. Participants must sign up in advance for staffing purposes. Please check/confirm your pick up times with your councilors. An extended care fee will be charged if you are late picking up your child.

FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH & SAFETY

If a participant has a communicable disease (e.g. Lice, Chicken Pox, etc.) or a current public health concern we would ask that the participant not attend leisure programs, swimming lessons or public swimming. Participants are welcome to return to the leisure program/aquatic lesson when they are healthy. Parents should be aware that the Child & Family Service Act requires that any suspicion of child abuse be reported immediately to the Children's Aid Society.

The Music Hall

The Music Hall has become the cultural centre of Uxbridge Township. Some of the varied forms of entertainment presented in the unique, beautiful building include excellent theatre groups, inspirational concerts, dance recitals plus Books & Author's Nights.

Uxbridge Music Scholarship Fund

The Fund was established in 1998 with the intention of offering Scholarships to students progressing to post-secondary education and who will be pursuing Musical Studies as their main focus. Uxbridge winners are already studying as far away as British Colombia and Western Ontario. The Fund was started when a few members of the local musical scene felt there was a need both to support young musicians and to provide some financial help. Candidates are required to be living or studying within the Township of Uxbridge boundaries and must be under the age of 25. Financial Support Continues to be generously given by local service clubs while local students and bands raise money by presenting concerts as well. Details of the Fund itself can be obtained by contacting Lesley Joosten (905) 852-3243. Here are a few of the outstanding entertainment groups that regularly appear at the Music Hall.

Heritage Site: Foster Memorial

THE THOMAS FOSTER MEMORIAL

The Foster Memorial is located 4 km north of Uxbridge on Durham 1 (Conc. 7) on the east side of the road. 9449 Regional Rd # 1, Uxbridge The Thomas Foster memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on a hill in the countryside of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahal inspired its structure, which is just outside of Agra, India. The roof surfaces are copper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, tracery and all metal parts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windows are the work of Yvonne Williams, and are of hand-painted, fired and leaded glass, the colour and designs are harmonious and are distributed so as to flood the interior with soft, colourful light. The 22k gold mosaics with also multi colors give elegance to this magnificent building. The floors are of rich coloured terrazzo and marble mosaics, wrought in symbolic designs. On entering, one crosses the River of Oaths on which floats water lilies and lily pads. In the general design of the floor beneath the great dome, the motion, typifying life, radiates from the Greek letters Alpha and Omega which in turn flank the Chi Rho monogram in its early Byzantine form, the Laurel wreath of victory over death encircles the centre motif. Above, the drum of the dome is pierced with 12 stained glass, leaded windows, that in the east being in the form of a gold cross on a rich blue ground. Circling the lower part of the dome, above the great arches in gold lettering on a field of graded blue mosaic is the inscription 'Take this my body for it is done and I have gained a new life, glorious and eternal'

Municipal Operations A Message from The Uxbridge Fire Department

Survive a Fire in Your Home... Plan Your Escape Today!
Anyone who has lived through a fire will tell you what a terrifying experience it is. Unfortunately, many people who experience fire never get a chance to tell their story - to warn others of the dangers of fire. Your fire department wants you to be prepared if a fire strikes your home. Please take a few minutes with your family to make a fire escape plan by following the nine simple instructions listed below. Every household must have a fire escape plan and a working smoke alarm to help ensure survival in a fire. Begin your plan by checking your smoke alarm to make sure that it is working. The smoke alarm will wake you up if a fire occurs while you are asleep.

6. Choose a place outside where everyone will meet

Choose a meeting place that every one will remember. It is a good idea to choose a spot at the front of your home or close to your neighbour's house. Everyone must know to go directly to this meeting place so they can be accounted for. No one should go back into a burning building for any reason.

7. Call the fire department from a neighbour's home

Once at the meeting place, someone can be sent to the neighbour's home to call the fire department. Include the neighbour's name and the fire department phone number (911) on your plan. Mark the street address of your home on your fire escape plan, Always keep the Fire Departments number by your own phone in case a neighbour needs to call.

1. Draw a floor plan of your home

Use a grid to draw a floor plan of your home, following the example provided as a guide. You should draw a floor plan for each floor of your home.

8. Make sure everyone is familiar with the home escape plan

Go over the entire plan with everyone. Discuss primary and secondary escape routes from each bedroom. Ensure that all children know the plan. Walk through the escape routes for each room with the entire family. Use this walk-through exercise to check your escape routes, making sure all exits are practical and easy to use. It is important that all windows will open and that no heavy furniture blocks any escape route. If escape ladders or ropes are to be used, make sure that they area accessible and that the appropriate individual is capable of using them.

2. Include all possible emergency exits

Draw in all walls, doors, windows and stairs. This will show you and your family all possible escape routes at a glance.

3. Include any important features that could help with your escape
Doors and windows are escape exits from your home. Are there any other features that could help you get out safely? Can you climb out a window onto the roof of a porch or garage? Is there a tree or television antenna tower that can be safely reached from a window? These features can be extremely useful in an emergency, however you must make sure that all escape routes are practical and usable.

9. Practice your escape plan

After reviewing the floor plan with the members of your household, have an actual practice to ensure that everyone knows what to do. Practice your escape plan every six months. In a real fire, you must react without hesitation as your escape routes may be quickly blocked by smoke or flames. Your practice drills will ensure that everyone knows what to do when fire strikes. If you have any questions or require further information please call the Uxbridge Fire Department at 905-852-3393 Remember in the event of an EMERGENCY call 9-1-1

4. Mark two escape routes from each room

There is a main exit from every room. This will be the exit to use if there is no apparent danger. If you are unable to use the main exit because of smoke or fire, you must have an alternate exit. The second exit is usually the window. Special consideration should be given to planning escape routes from the bedrooms as most fires occur at right when everyone is sleeping. This second exit must be practical and easy to use. Make sure that the occupant of that bedroom is able to use the second exit.

5. Remember - some people may need help to escape

Decide in advance who will assist the very young, elderly or physically challenged members of your household. A few minutes of planning will save valuable seconds in a real emergency.

Road Watch
What is Road Watch? A new community initiative designed to improve road safety by creating greater awareness and giving residents an opportunity to participate in identifying and reporting dangerous and aggressive driving in the Township of Uxbridge. Why have Road Watch? To help reduce Motor Vehicle Collisions and potential injuries and fatalities in the Township of Uxbridge. What is Aggressive Driving? Aggressive driving is defined as excessive speeding, tail- gating, failure to stop and any other unsafe driving that puts others at high risk for collision or injury. How does Road Watch work? Citizen Report Forms may be used any time you observe an act of aggressive driving. Record as much information as you can about the particular aggressive driving incident that you witnessed. This information will help the police in monitoring high risk areas in our community. To complete the report, include the license number, the make and colour of the vehicle, the location (as exact as possible) and the nature of the incident. When you send in the report, it is important that you sign it. This helps safeguard the system against abuse. Be assured that your personal information is for statistical use only and is held in the strictest of confidence. Drivers reported will receive a letter from the police, describing the unsafe or aggressive driving incident that was witnessed. If a driver is reported more than once, the police will make personal contact with that individual regarding the reported problems in person or by telephone. Subsequent offenses may result in enforcement action by the police depending on the severity of the incident. Remember, this is your
