Last Summer Barb and I had the opportunity to visit Young Living Farms in St. Maries, Idaho. This was a working vacation. On this farm of 200 acres, they grow Lavender and Melissa. These plants are harvested and the oil in them is distilled for use as Essential Oils. The Melissa plants are cut using a swather, and cut plants are loaded with pitchforks onto a large trailer. Then they are unloaded onto a large cement pad and allowed to stress for 12 hours. As the plants wilt, the availability of the oils increases. Then the plants are placed into a large steamer. The steam which contains water vapor and oil vapor is then cooled in a condenser. After the oil is separated from the water it can be bottled and sold for medicinal use. Because the Melissa was not ready to harvest, we spent the rst two days working in the green house, planting Melissa seeds in small plastic seed trays. As these seeds germinate and grow into small plants, they will eventually be planted by hand in the elds where the Melissa can grow to maturity. On the third and fourth day of our vacation, Dr. Gary Young, who owns the farm and is the founder of Young Living Essential Oils, decided that we would harvest Balsam Fir since the Melissa was not ready. This was done by going into a forest of Balsam Fir, cutting the trees, and chipping them. The chips are then hauled to the distillery in a semi trailer. The trailer was unloaded into a large steamer. And again the oil was steamed out of the woodchips, condensed, and separated from the water. We took the oil to a laboratory where was ltered and bottled. Half of a semi trailer made only about 2 gallons of oil. The trees were cut using a large shear mounted on the front of the Skid Steer. They were carried to the chipper by another Skid Steer with the clam bucket. A small excavator was used to put the trees into the chipper. The chipper, made by a Michigan company, Bandit Industries, blew the chips into the trailer. The volunteers, like ourselves, were allowed to run all of these pieces of equipment. Most of them had never seen these kinds of machines let alone operated them. So for many, this was a peak experience, overcoming fear, and reducing a large obstacle to something small and manageable. Each night after working very hard in the elds, Dr. Young would spend a couple hours in the classroom sharing with us his experience and knowledge about Essential Oils. We shared meals in a large comfortable lodge and spent the nights sleeping in tents. For the last 15 years, Ive been using natural medicines, herbs, Homeopathy, and occasionally Essential Oils. I never really understood that these oils are used by the plants to protect themselves. The oils have healing properties that we can use to improve our health. These properties include anti-inammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, sedation or calming, energizing, and much, much more. So for me, seeing this process from planting the seeds to sealing the medicine in the bottle was very amazing. On the last day of our vacation, Dr. Young and his staff took us up the St. Joseph River for an exhilarating white-water raft trip which ended with a nice barbecue. I am very grateful to Dr. Gary Young for providing this opportunity which any Young Living distributor can experience. If this sounds like something you would like to do, call us. It would be great to have you join us. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
