email tyashinsky@gmail.com D.J. McCarthy WR Coach LSU Perimeter Blocking Why do you coach? Could you play for you? If you were one of your players, would you enjoy playing for yourself? 20 years from now, what will your players remember about you. If all they remember is football, you failed them. Teach them how to be men.

4 Ws o o o o E4 o o o o

Some will Some wont So What Someone is waiting Exit- Release from the line, make it look like a pass. Have to have first 5 yards be hard off line looking the same as every other route. Explode- Explode to an arms length away and then Come to balance Dont say break down because they stop then. Come to balance means feet are moving, guns are in their holsters ready to strike. Engage- Dont engage until with in an arms length. Delay throwing the block as long as possible. The shorter a block has to be held the more successful it will be. Extend- Aim for the nipples, thumbs up. Extend arms all the way out after a strong punch and control the man.

Perimeter blocking is zone blocking in space. Take the man where he wants to go and let the running back make a cut. When teaching, start with the end in mind. Teach starting from an arms length away and teach the end before teaching the approach. Hands at 9 and 3, strike with palms, Lock out, thumbs on nipples Feet o Shoulder width apart o Teach them to duck walk just like the lineman. Take them to the lineman and have them work that technique. o Never break down, come to balance and keep feet moving o Load hands like a six shooter o Find your man o Five feet away o Foot Fire o Fit Book Recommendations o The Servent- James C Hunter o Halftime- Bob Buford

Ferris State Pistol Goal line and coaching situations 2 min offense o Start at the 20 o Running clock, have someone spot the ball, (Back up QB) use different scenarios o Coach your players on where to run with the ball in this situation. Know down and distance, know where the sideline is, know what stops the clock (1st downs and sidelines) o Dont change formations when the clock is running. Change formations on clock stops, dont waste any time. o Be patient and take what they give you. You can still run the ball in 2 minute drill if the defense is conceding the run. o Know what you need to win the game. If you only need a field goal, get into range, know what your kickers range is, and then get 10 more yards than that. o Win the game, dont get cute, kick field goals. o In practice, keep score, Winners and losers every day. Losers run, winners celebrate Overtime o Go through the rules during the preseason. Its your job to make sure your players are prepared for that situation. o Have a mock coin toss and make sure your players understand their options. o Play the exact rules in practice that you play in the game. o Game plan for what you will use in that situation. What hash do you want your kicker on? What is your 2 point play? Coming out of your own endzone o Put ball on one yard line and try to get 1 first down. o If you give up a safety, be ready to play the next play. Know the personnel and the rules for a safety. o If you get to 4th down, punt the ball backed up. Dont think about it, just punt and play defense. Redzone Offense o Do not tighten splits in the formation, thats what the defense wants. o Run your base offense first. Make them stop your bread and butter. Dance with the one that got you there. o Take what the defense is giving you. If they are loaded up in the box, find a way to get outside. Dont force a square peg into a round hole. o Have a special play practiced up for when you are stuck in a rut. o Run across the goal line with hips, knees, and feet. Secure the ball. Dont celebrate early, dont reach across if you can run across.

North Dakota State University Screen Game Brent Vigen Gap Screen What we like: High % More simple for O-line O-line down hill block happens faster in less space Flexible vs many different rush looks, from 4 man pressures to Cover 0 Pressure looks Gets ball to creative playmaker in space In order for this screen to be defended, defense has to give up their DE rushing in the passing game.

Darrin Slack Power Point available- Email to receive. Teaching a QB to self correct, not self destruct. This is a hard clinic talk to describe without seeing his power points and videos. I will give you a over view of what he talked about but I suggest getting the videos. Improving the throwing mechanics so a QB gets consistent results and understands why he didnt get the desired results when it happens. Teach him how to correct his throws based on what happened to the ball. QB needs to know why they are using the mechanics they are. Extension of the coach. You cant coach him on every play on Friday Nights, he needs to understand what is happening to correct on the field. Need to use a common language. Basic words that are applied through teaching Why do you do things the way you do them? o Where do you put your feet when taking a snap under center and why? o Shoulder width: Why? o To be balanced so that you can move either direction at the same speed without taking a false step. o Staggered stance = unbalance= false step to get balanced. That slows you down. o When taking a snap you pressure from bottom hand through top hand to ensure you dont fumble snap. Fundamentals must be driving by something that is non-negotiable. Get rid of the clichs in your teachings and teach your players why they are doing something No matter what youve heard or believe, the arm throws the ball, not the feet. Feet are important in terms of getting the arm in position, but in the end arm throws the ball.
