CHARLEVOIX – It’s tournamenttime, and that means, be preparedfor anything.The Ramblers were just that, pre-pared, as they played out the slow-tempo strategy of East Jordan incoming away with a 40-27 Class Cdistrict tournament victory onMarch 5 at Charlevoix High School.The Ramblers improved to 15-6with the victory, while the Red Dev-ils closed out a 5-16 season.It took a little to get things goingsas East Jordan scored the first pointof the contest on a Joseph Manvillefree throw at the 5:44 mark of thefirst quarter.Boyne responded an a pair of Ryan Carson free throws and a Kee-gan LaBlance jumper from aboutsix feet out to put the Ramblersahead 4-1 with 4:35 left in the quar-ter. Manville would respond with arunner less than a minute later.Boyne City would close the quar-ter holding a 6-5 advantage.“Coach Weber did a good job of slowing the game down and wenttriangle and two on Keegan(LaBlance) and Jay (Redman),”Boyne City coach Nick Redmansaid. “I was proud of the guys forbuying in that there wasn’t going tobe very many possessions, so wehad to make them count.”East Jordan went back to the slowit down pace as they ran a spreadout three man dribble weave nearhalf court on multiple possessions,and eventually knotted the game at10-10 on a Noah Bacchus triple fromabout 26 feet with 4:40 left in the sec-ond quarter.The Ramblers would then finishthe quarter on a 7-0 run over thefinal 4:30 as Carson hit a jumperand following an East Jordanturnover, Boyne guard GerrittMoeke found an open look for a jumper to make it 14-10 Boyne, andnewly called up freshman MaceoVroman scored his first career var-sity points as he converted a layupand free throw following a steal andRed Devil foul, for a 17-10 Ramblerhalftime lead.Both teams came out of the half-time break and had difficulty find-ing the rim as Boyne missed its firstthree attempts and East Jordanmissed its first two shots in the pos-session limited contest.The Red Devils would cut into theRambler lead and pull within a bas-ket 20-18 with just under four min-

EAST JORDAN – Coming intothe game with hard fought victo-ries over East Jordan and HarborSprings, the red hot CharlevoixRayders looked to add another“W” to the win column on March2.But Charlevoix ran into an ElkRapids team that entered thegame on the heels of a convinc-ing 59-36 district semifinal vic-tory over Boyne City onFebruary 29.The Elks took advantage of theRayders two tough games earlierin the week with a strong secondquarter, while Charlevoix wentcold from the floor as Elk Rapidsclaimed a 56-45 win the Class Cdistrict final.Charlevoix got on the boardfirst, as Sydney Carlson put themup 2-0 on a jumper from the leftside just over a minute into thecontest.The two team would battleback and forth in a fast pacedopening quarter that saw Raydersenior Jenna Way score 11 of hergame-high 25 points, whereCharlevoix took a 17-13 lead.The second quarter saw bothteam have difficulty finding thebottom of the net as neither teamscored for over a three minute pe-riod midway through the quarterand with about 3:45 left in thehalf, Elk Rapids then broke a 17-17 tie and went on an 11-2 run totake a 28-19 lead at the break.The lone Charlevoix scorecame on a pair of Kelsey Wayfree throws with 34.3 seconds re-maining in the quarter.Elk Rapids opened the thirdwith an easy basket, beforeKelsey Way added another freethrow to cut into keep the Ray-ders within 30-20, after tradingbaskets over the next four min-utes, Jenna Way scored the finalsix points of the quarter forCharlevoix keeping the Elks leadat 10 entering the final eight min-utes.Jenna Way would open thefourth quarter on the same note,scoring the first seven points forCharlevoix as the Rayders pulledwithin five 43-38, again at 45-40,and the last time at 47-42 with3:37 remaining.Elk Rapids then went to aspread motion offense as theymoved the ball and managed theclock, forcing Charlevoix to foul.The Elks capitalized on sometimely free throw shooting, going7-of-8 from the charity stripe withunder a minute remaining in thecontest.Taylor Blackmore and AlexDart each finished with 14 pointsto lead Elk Rapids, while MeganGregorski chipped in with 11 asthey improved to 13-9 overall, andfaced Lake Michigan Conferencerival Kalkaska in the regional onMarch 6 at Inland Lakes-IndianRiver High School.Charlevoix closes a 9-14 season,Jenna Way finished with 25points, Kelsey Way added 11points and Carlson had sevenpoints.

The Rayders improved to 9-13with the win, while Harborclosed out a 9-12 campaign.Charlevoix took charge rightfrom the opening tip on a SydneyCarlson triple for a 3-0 lead asthey took a 15-8 first quarter ad-vantage, before extending that to33-19 at halftime. The Rayders led45-32 after three quarters.Kelsey Way, keyed a strong de-fensive first half, taking threecharges on would be Rams pene-trators, and Charlevoix usedtheir high-intensity full courtpressure to rattle the Harbor ballhandlers into turnovers.“They defeated us twice thisyear and beat us in the DistrictFinal last year,” Charlevoix coachLeslie Hoffman said. “I think thathelped put a little fire under us,this was more than just a hugewin for our girls.”Also for Charlevoix, Megan Pe-ters had 11 points and Carlsonfinished with nine.Jenna Lechowicz finished with15 points to lead Harbor, whileElena Ongaro added 11.“We knew going in that itwould be a game requiring somehard hats,” Hoffman noted. “Wewould have to battle and competeand be physical, Harbor is a goodteam who works hard and playsaggressive.”

EAST JORDAN – TheRamblers ran into a fo-cused Elks team as theyfell 59-36 in district semifi-nal action on February 29.Elk Rapids took a 14-9first quarter advantageand extended that lead toa 31-15 halftime advantageand were up 46-23 afterthree quarters of play.Boyne City was led bysenior Tanner McCunewith 16 points, whileRainy McCune chipped inwith eight as the Ram-blers closed out a 7-15 sea-son.Elk Rapids was led byMegan Gregorski with 13points, while Alex Dartand Rachel Hintz eachadded 10 points.Tanner McCune fin-ished with seven boards,while Mary Myers addedsix for the Ramblers.

BOYNE FALLS – It had been quitesome time since Ellsworth tasted adistrict championship, and cominginto this year’s tournament the fieldwas wide open so the Lancers madesure to capitalize on the opportunity,but it didn’t come easy as they cameaway with a 39-36 victory over Bel-laire on March 2.The Lancers improved to 17-5, withtheir first district crown since 2006and advanced to the Traverse CityWest regional where it playedMcBain NMC on March 6.Ellsworth was led by Dana Neu-mann’s 18 points, followed by 10 fromEmily Veenstra.The Lancers held a 22-16 lead athalftime, but were unable to shakethe Eagles.Katie Thornton paced Bellaire with13 points.

BOYNE FALLS — The Lancers got18 points and 18 rebounds from EmilyVeenstra and 18 points and fromDana Neumann as the Lancers con-trolled the boards en route to a 51-43Class D district semifinal victoryover the Loggers on February 29.Ellsworth raced out to an early leadas they scored the first 15 points of the opening quarter before BoyneFalls Emily Matelski hit a pair of three pointers with less than 40 sec-onds remaining in the quarter.The Lancers kept the lead aroundthe ten point mark for a majority of the second quarter and withstood aLogger run that pulled them towithin six, but Ellsworth respondedand pushed the lead back up to ten athalftime, 29-19.“They destroyed us on the boards,”Boyne Falls coach Lyndel Ingalls-Sage said. “We cut the gap twice tosix and seven points, but couldn’t getany closer.”Ellsworth improved to 16-5 with thewin, while the Loggers closed out an11-10 campaign.Boyne Falls was led by sophomoreEmily Matelski’s game-high 23points, six assists and was 5-of-7 frombeyond the arch. Kristen Matelskifinished with 10 points, going 8-of-8from the free throw line.
