Golf: Canowindra Golf Club is turning 80 in May 2012 & Annette Thomas is asking for any early photos of the Club: sand greens, construction etc to compile into a commemorative booklet. The clubhouse was built & funded by the efforts of members. Contact 6344 2644 or drop them into the Club. All care will be taken with your photos. Have a look at the new Golf Club website at canowindragolfclub.yolasite.com Daylight: saving ends the weekend after next at 3am Sunday 1 April 2012 when clocks will be put back one hour. Beanshed: Production 2012 is in full swing again & this year it is called "Twisted Tales". The play will be performed between 29 March & 1 April & the children are all madly rehearsing now. Drive: safely! Although the flood waters have flowed on, the damage on the roads is still very much a hazard. Pot holes and edges of roads have become a nightmare, & councils around the region can only do so much. Unless you want expensive repairs or replacement of your suspension, steering & wheels, slow down. Let The Canowindra Phoenix know, via phone on 6344 2760 or facebook, of trouble spots so info can be advised to all, compiled & presented to relevant councils for action. YOU...make the Phoenix what it is today! Last Monday 5 March marked the 4th year of the inception of The Canowindra Phoenix, & it's pretty obvious that we need to evolve. Suggestions & feedback are needed to help shape what you want from your Phoenix. Thank you to Marie Daley for keeping the grammar correct, & Bill Barwood for letting us know what's on his mind...however all voices are important to us. Please come in & have a chat, or slip an anonymous note under the Ryall Street door of the Star Building. Either way you are encouraged to be part of the paper that you read.

TIGERS FIRST TRIAL MATCH FOR 2012 Are you wondering what to do this Saturday to the Tom Clyburn Oval by 5pm for an entertaining evening of footy! The First Grade Tigers (the 2011 team pictured above) will take on the Robertson Spuddies, in a much anticipated trial match that both clubs are looking forward to. With less than six weeks before the comp starts, this is always a fun game and an opportunity to sneak a peek at the Tigers 2012 side. With a lot of old and new faces, and after the Club's most successful year in 2011, it has been a full on pre-season training period to get all up to Tigers speed. And this is going to be a full on year with the Grand Final being held in Canowindra, so the Tigers want to have the biggest supporter pack in the comp. Games are family friendly, so bring your kids and get out of the house and meet some new people, or reconnect with those you haven't seen for a while. Kick off will be at 5pm, and bar facilities with a light canteen will be available. Come along, check out the new and old faces in the 2012 Tigers side, show your support and share a beer or two. TRAINING: for First Grade and Youth League are on Wednesday and Friday nights from 6:30pm, and the Tigresses are Tuesday and Friday nights. If you're wanting to play come on up and join in, even if you just want to increase your fitness and support the teams.

Recognition needs to be extended to Julia Andrews, who helped raise the Phoenix from the ashes of the CTC; & Luke Slattery for realising the need for such a publication in the first place. There was a distinct need for an unbiased, encouraging & community based publication that promoted the stimulation of the local economy. Flickerfest: get in now before you miss out! To the editor...
Canowindra Caravan Park & Marina would like to thank the Showground Trust, especially Bill Watson, for all of their help with the evacuation of vans from the site during the recent floods. Your generous help and support is greatly appreciated. Ros & Neil Haywood Canowindra Caravan Park I wish to give a very big thank you to our local SES. They were fabulous, ferrying our staff to and from Moyne during last weekend. It would have been very difficult had we not had staff to manage the facility. Thank you guys it was much appreciated! Regards Ms Dianne Cameron, Moyne Aged Care Plus It is strange how long it takes Canowindra and Cabonne Council to catch up with reality. The section of the Swinging Bridge, damaged by an arson attempt to set the structure on fire, was repaired, Wednesday 29 February 2012. Cabonne Council was notified in writing of this on Monday 23 May 2011. It is believed that this act occurred on the same night, not long before, when an adjoining paddock was set alight without the owner's consent. The matter was later discussed with Canowindra Police who were waiting for Council to report the event as they are owners of the bridge. This took place nearly 9 months ago. The hype and concern expressed this week over vandalism, graffito and the attempted arson of the bridge seems rather late. Is there perhaps a "local government election" to take place in Cabonne Shire later this year? Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood, Canowindra Phoenix note: apologies to Bill & readers. This email was received 1 March 2012, but only included this week due to space restrictions.

FLOOD TO FIRE Sunday 11 March saw Canowindra going from one extreme to another. An hay shed fire was attended from 3pm at a property on Rivers Road Canowindra. The Rural Fire Service units from Gooloogong, Rivers, Torrington, Cowra & Billimari attended the scene to battle the blaze. The units did a great job saving a nearby shed, which also contained hay & farm machinery, unfortunately the main shed was destroyed Police are still investigating the cause of the fire. It just goes to show that on the land we need to be vigilant at all times. So if you see anything out of the ordinary, it's always better to be safe than sorry, so call Triple Zero 000 & report the matter.

Happy 50th birthday Beagle. From your loving family xxx

CANOWINDRA: OPEN FOR BUSINESS Flood photos abound, however it is now time to move on. A number of planned events in our community that had to be postponed, however have a couple have scored a win. Although delayed for a week after the advertised opening, the River Bank Gallery had a great response to local artist Carissa Ramsay's "Waking up the Innocent" exhibition Saturday night. Launched by fellow local artist Heather Vallance, Carissa's works will be displayed until Thursday 5 April, after which is the Smalls 2012 opening on Saturday 7 April. "The gallery had a big crowd despite the road closures," commented resident artist David Isbester. "And those who attended were enthusiastic and had a great time." Bendy Street Emporium's Design 101 Workshop with Kim Knox-Thurn had to be postponed until Saturday 21 April, however Kate Barclay, owner, has advised that all confirmed bookings will be honoured or refunded in full if participants are unable to attend on the revised date. As it has turned out, the date upon which Kim will visit coincides with the Balloon Challenge which allows participants, and Kim, to fortunately take advantage of the festivities that surround the annual event. FOCUS ON YOUR LIFE IN CABONNE Next month Canowindra & the Cabonne Shire will host a large number of visitors to enjoy the Canowindra Balloon Challenge. This will be an ideal opportunity for you to capture the essence of village life in Cabonne, & enter the Canowindra Challenge photograph competition A Snapshot of Cabonne. This is the second year of the popular competition, & organisers are expecting a lot more entries than last year. Photographs are to be taken between the 16th to the 25th March of something in your particular location that is typical of your life in our shire. Autumn is a magical month & is an exceptional opportunity to create some tangible memories. Everyone in our shire would have a favourite spot, so grab your camera & share it with others. Some tips to help you get started: Plan your shot: the position of the sun; time of day; what you want to include; take your time. Look for small, interesting detail shots right at your feet. Experiment with different camera settings. The more photos you take, the better the chance of finding the one to print. There are three categories for entrants: 15 years & under; 16-35 years; & over 36 years. Individuals must be amateur photographers & may submit up to three photographs. Photos must be an image captured by the entrant between Friday 16th & Sunday 25th March 2012 on a digital camera (NOT a phone camera). Photos must include EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) data, which proves that the image it has not been enhanced or changed using a computer program. All entrants must be amateur photographers. Images should be emailed to Robyn at Federation Fotos on robyn@federationfotos.com.au by Friday 30 March 2012. A covering entry stating: your name; date of birth (for category verification); email address; & location where photo was taken, should be sent with images Entries will be compiled into A Snapshot of Cabonne exhibition & displayed in shop windows in Gaskill Street Canowindra for the month of April, & then available for display in other villages within Cabonne Shire. All images will remain the property of Canowindra Challenge Inc. For any inquiries: please contact Robyn Wilkinson at Federation Fotos at the above email address, or Jan Kerr on 02 6344 1819 or jan@gjkerr.com.au.

CANOWINDRA BOWLS REPORT Canowindra No 7s had a great 5-1 win over Gooloogong and they now take on Cowra at Canowindra on Sunday 15 March. Teams are unchanged from last week. The No 5s had a close match at Grenfell winning two rinks, but going down on the big board to loose 4-2 . So now the 5s have a bye this week. The Minor Singles Final is to be played this Saturday 14 March between K Fisher and Eric Earsman. Ted Stetton and Ron Lynch defeated Bruce Webb and Max Baldwin in the O'Brien Cup in a closely fought game, with Ted and Ron securing victory near the end of the game.

CANOWINDRA DUO IN THE GROUP 11 TEAM Canowindra's Kain Earsman & Jayden Brown have been selected to represent Group 11 at the under 18 Western Region Trials at Wellington this Saturday 17 March. Earsman was selected in the second row & has cemented his spot in the team with some punishing defence & numerous line breaks against 1st Division clubs Forbes & Parkes. Young Jayden Brown led the Tigers around well at halfback on the day & was rewarded with a position as a reserve in the 18 man squad. His ability to play any position on the field makes him a very valuable part of the team. Group 11 Selector Andrew Pull commented, "Earsman was the first forward picked in a position that had a lot of depth." In another boost for the Canowindra Club, Nick Willson & Dean Wilson were both picked in the President's 13 to participate on the day. The President's 13 consists of players from Group 10 & Group 11 that were on the fringe of making the group teams but narrowly missed out. This was a great reward for the club after thumping 1st Division club Forbes in game one, & being beaten by a try against Parkes in game two. The full Group 11 team is: 1 Jack Creith (Parkes); 2 Sam Thorpe (Condo); 3 Brent Naden (Wellington); 4 Jai Dunn (Dubbo Macquarie); 5 Brendan Westcott (Peak Hill); 6 Swade Dunn (Dubbo Macquarie); 7 Josh Ferguson (Dubbo Macquarie); 8 Dan Kelly (Dubbo Macquarie); 9 Jake OBrien (Parkes); 10 Jake Goodwin (Forbes); 11 Kaleb Whitehurst (Cobar); 12 Kain Earsman (Canowindra); 13 Lincoln Kavanagh (Dubbo Cyms); 14 Jordan Hall (Condo); 15 Daniel Buckerfield (Dubbo Macquarie); 16 Jayden Brown (Canowindra); 17 Dave Cowhan (Forbes); 18 Billy Sing (Dubbo Cyms). The full President's 13 team is: 1 Nathan Orr (Mudgee); 2 Nick Willson (Canowindra); 3 Jarrod Robbins (Orange CYMS); 4 Sam Dwyer (Parkes); 5 Dean Willson (Canowindra); 6 Chad Porter (Parkes); 7 Jack Grant (Orange CYMS); 8 Dylan Jones (Oberon); 9 Alex Bonham (Dubbo CYMS); 10 Adam Richards (Parkes); 11 Ben Thompson (Parkes); 12 Martin Herbert (Forbes); 13 Mick Ingwersen (Bathurst Panthers); 14 Ethan Barker (Oberon); 15 Jim Delboux (Cobar); 16 Lewis Stanley (Wellington); 17 Ricky Reid (Dubbo Macquarie). 2012 Western 18s Trials 17 March at Wellington: 11.30am Game A Group 11 v Castlereagh 12.30pm Game B - Group 10 v Region Presidents 13 2.15pm Game C Loser Game A v Loser Game B 3.15pm Game D Winner Game A v Winner Game B Admission: Adults - $5; Aged Pensioners - $3; & Children under 16 - Free. CANOWINDRA CRICKET CLUBs season has come to a ARISH OF T DWARDS disappointing end after their minor semi final loss to Cowra Bowling Club last Saturday. After only playing ATHOLIC HURCH ANOWINDRA two games in the last five weeks due to washouts & the bye, Canowindra lost the toss, & after being sent Saturday 17 March: Canowindra out to bowl, the boys took advantage of a pitch with 6pm a bit of life by taking early wickets. Sunday 18 March: Brendan Traves took one in his first over & Nick Eugowra Guthrie soon picked up two. Bowling Club were 8.30am struggling at 3/28 after 11, then Traves then 10am Cudal removed Simon Ryan for 17. Nathan Worth was the only batsman showing resistance as Brendan The Co-operating Anglican Church grabbed his third. Al Myers picked up two wickets in Parish of Canowindra, & Uniting quick succession, & Nick Traves also rattled the Church linked congregations of stumps. A last wicket partnership of 35 kept the Canowindra, Cranbury & Cudal boys in the field a little longer, but Pete Guthrie eventually grabbed the final wicket. Bowling Club were all out for 109 & Canowindra were feeling Thursday 15 March confident considering they had chased down 180 10am Peace Memorial Uniting Church against this team last time they met. Brendan Traves was the best with the ball after a consistent spell of Sunday 18 March - 4rd Sunday in Lent Mothering Sunday bowling to finish with 3/27 from 11 overs. Brendan has had another great season & is now not just a 8am St Matthew's Woodstock key player for Canowindra, but also for the Cowra 9:30am All Saint's Anglican Church rep side. Nick Guthrie finished with 2/24 from 8 Canowindra overs, & Al Myers finished with 2/28 from 7. 11:15am Cranbury Uniting Church Canowindras innings started dreadfully as Brendan Traves fell in the first over without scoring. Jake Devlin fell for 4 & Peter Guthrie was also out for 0. Wickets fell consistently as Rohan Toole (3) & Shaun Craven (0) were both out within the first 10 overs. Nick Guthrie was the only batsman to reach double figures, but he fell for 16. Both Whatmans failed to trouble the scorers while Mark Norman (1) & a fighting 8 from Myers were the last wickets to fall. INSTALLATION, REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE OF: Nick Traves remained not out 3 as Canowindra were all out for 41. It was a disappointing end to the season but it was just one of those days for the boys roofing - draining - general plumbing as all batsmen struggled to get themselves going. DOMESTIC, COMMERCIAL & RURAL Despite the loss its been a great season for the young Canowindra team with only three players over the age of 22! A big thank you to the Canowindra Bowling Club for their sponsorship & support this season while a thank you must also go to the Canowindra Phoenix for allowing everyone to see how the boys go each Fast, efficient service!
