School Swimming Carnival:

Our school Swimming Carnival will be held at the Morrinsville Recreation Grounds on Thursday 7th March (next week); this will be an all day event for students who can swim a minimum of one length comfortably. There will be a sausage sizzle, drinks etc on sale during the day for students & supporters. Parents are very welcome to come along during the day, we will also require help from parents with timekeeping. Students involved must come to school on the day in full school uniform. Students must bring their togs, towel, PE gear and may also bring mufti gear to wear at the pools in their Team colours (Tainui = yellow, Aranui = red, Aotea = blue). NO face paint, crepe paper, felt tips etc as they discolour the pool. All students will need to bring a sun hat (any colour/style), sun block, a large drink and food for the day.

At last our new Food Tech room is ready to use! Last year refurbishment began in Room 12 to build a new, brighter, more serviceable space for Food Technology. Students have commented that the new room has more space to move around in, the room is brighter and it is a whole different environment from the old room. We also have new ovens, a dishwasher for Mrs Dainty, a walk-in pantry, extra storage rooms and a new dining area. New moveable benches are next on the list to complete the room during the year.
Report by Cade Hauraki, Zach Judge and Charlotte Callaghan.

All our students take part in the four areas of technology taught at MIS (Food Technology, Hard Materials Technology, Science and Art) during both years at Intermediate. Technology classes are unique to intermediate schools and students in this age group enjoy real-life experiences and authentic learning opportunities. Technology gives students an opportunity to experience a hands-on approach to their learning and teaches vital skills necessary for everyday living, as well as providing an insight to what may become a lifelong interest or career. Students of all academic abilities excel in technology classes and this promotes positive attitudes and motivates students to tackle challenging learning activities. Our technology facilities also enable teachers to offer extension classes such as wood carving, Food Tech extension and quilting. The next stage of property development will be starting the planning process for refurbishing the old Food Tech room into a purpose-built Science Lab.

MIS Boys Cricket Report

The Year 8 Heat played St. Peters at Cambridge and won the toss to bowl first, the wickets were evenly spread amongst the bowlers. The boys fielded with determination and commitment to be rewarded by bowling the opposition out for just over one hundred runs. Kyle and Kieran got us off to a solid start with strong batting, then we lost a few quick wickets; the opposition managed to bowl great lines and get quick wickets to seal their victory. Player of the day was Kieran Price for excellent patient batting and superb bowling. This weekends game is at Ngatea Domain starting at 9.00am so we need to be at the top gate at 7.30am. MIS Year 7 Blue played Te Rapa Knights at the Morrinsville Rec Grounds. MIS Blue batted first and scored 150 runs off their 28 overs. Top batting by Taine Gilling with 33 runs not out and Sam Houghton scored 30 not out. MIS Blue then had an outstanding team effort in the field restricting Te Rapa to 96 in their 28 overs. Some excellent bowling in their 3 overs by Conna Newman 5 runs for 1 wicket, Taine Gilling 6 runs for 1 wicket & Tyrone Maui 6 runs for 1 wicket. Well done and congratulations on the win. Congratulations to Sam Houghton, Luke Meiklejohn & Taine Gilling who have been selected to play for Waikato Valley Rep Team vs Bay of Plenty on the 10th March. MIS Year 7 Red played Otorohanga Stars who batted first scoring 141 for 9 in 27.5 overs. MIS Red replied with 142 for 1 in 27.4 overs taking the win. Players of the day; Lewis Candy bowling 3 overs for 1 wicket and 14 runs, completed by a great run out with a fine throw at the stumps providing some much needed energy in the field on a very hot day. Luke Meiklejohn bowled 3 overs taking 2 wickets for 17 runs and retired with 31 runs. Keegan Hamerton bowled 1.5 overs taking 1 wicket for 6 runs and also retired on 3 runs. The boys are developing well and representing the school with good sportsmanship.

MI Mates Fundraising
Thanks to the parents who came along to our first MI Mates Meeting which was held on Tuesday night. Parents are invited to come along to any meetings during the year. Thank you also to the families who have offered to help or donate items for the AMP catering this weekend. Last year MI Mates raised over $24,000 from various activities including raffles, catering, calf donations, entertainment book sales, pie orders etc. This money was used to purchase sports equipment, library books, literacy centre books and school-wide IT equipment. Thank you to all families and friends for your efforts with school fundraising, without your support we would not be able to make these purchases for the students.

Agri-Kids Report
On Saturday 17th February, 3 teams of 3 students competed in the Waikato /Bay of Plenty agri kids competition. The day involved building a fence, making a cast (first aid), shooting ducks (plastic) and building a pen house. All teams made it through to the final race which involved the first 7 teams. In this race we built a gate, put on lipstick and nail polish (girls excelled in this area) and ate a variety of fruit as fast as possible. We had success with our boys team who finished 2nd overall and they have been invited to compete in the New Zealand championships held in Auckland in May! All teams had a blast and it wasnt something you normally get to do. Thanks to all the parents that provided transport and encouragement. Report by Brooke Koppens, Danielle Mellow and Mr. Higgins.
