MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Thank you to all the parents who came to the Information Evening last night. The introduction to the whole group centred on the schools website, Ultranet, the book pack and the costs involved, voluntary contributions and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. We are really excited about the Primary Years Program. We conducted a feasibility study four years ago and it is finally at the point where we feel ready to join the program. We have been saving for the fees and now we are going to fly! Please see http://www.ibo.org/pyp/ for further information. Many thanks to our teaching staff for their time commitment and presentations last night. It is lovely to see teachers so passionate about their work and so keen to catch up with parents. Mrs Sue Thompson requires further surgery on her finger so will remain on sick leave. Mrs Rachel Engelman will be undertaking teaching duties for Year 2T. We welcome Mrs Engelman, an experienced teacher who was the assistant principal of a neighbouring school. Thank you to parents who have volunteered for Classroom Representative positions. Please see your childs teacher if you would like to volunteer.

A special welcome to Mrs Sharon Harper, our Business Manager, who joined us at the beginning of the year. Sharon has settled in and is very much a valued member of staff. Mrs Diane Reid and Sharon certainly make the super team of the office. If you havent done so already, pop in a say hello to Sharon. We are having a special Devonshire Morning Tea on 16th March for parents of 3 and 4 year old kinder children. We will be having a tour of the school so if you know of any parents who would like to participate, please contact us. Monday assembly the leadership badges will be distributed. Ms Lorraine Wreford MP Mordialloc has been invited to present the badges. Thank you to those parents who nominated for School Council. I will announce whether we will go to a vote next Monday. Wendy Stirling Principal NOTICES BY E-MAIL We are currently compiling a listing of email addresses for those families who are interested in receiving the newsletter by email rather than hard copy. In the near future we are also hoping to be able to send home correspondence from class teachers via email as well. 1

This will have the benefit of correspondence arriving promptly into your email inbox, in full colour and unrumpled from being in your childs bag! If you are interested, please do not hesitate to drop into, or call the office. Thank you. FINANCIAL REPORT Last Wednesday we had Alev come in from the Commonwealth Bank to talk to us about Financial Literacy, which is about saving money and interest from the bank. Alev said saving money is a big thing. She had a saying Spend some on you, save some, too. After a while if you put money in your bank you get interest from the bank, which means the more you put in at the end of the month, you get extra money from your bank. She spoke about Debit cards and Credit cards the difference between is that a credit card has heaps of money on it and you have to pay money back at the end of the month. A debit card has the money that you have that you have and thats the limit of the money you get on your debit card. So, you cant spend what you dont have. Another way to earn money is neighbourhood jobs or garage sales. Its easy and can be fun to do. You can also buy items off ebay, but be careful because people sometimes lie about what they sell you. Harry. 6J

Mr Seeney On Wednesday 23rd February 2011, I learnt that saving money is good and spending money on things that you do not need is bad. Theres a saying that goes like this: Speed to your needs and wait for your wants Emily S Year 2

Financial Literacy Start Smart

Guided by Captain Super Cents, the Year 2 students were introduced to various concepts of money. They learnt about notes and coins, purchasing of goods and services with money, the difference between needs and wants, methods of saving money, how money is earned, places that are safe to store money and different ways of accessing money such as the use of Keycards. Students looked out for the wallet monster, Gobbles who represents temptations to spend money. Through tips and rhymes such as Speed to your needs, wait for you wants, students are taught solid financial practices.

On Monday 21st March 2011 the students and staff will be celebrating Harmony Day. Harmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes a tolerant and culturally diverse society. The continuing message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone - celebrating the cultures that make Australia a great place to live. The students will rotate through interesting and enjoyable multicultural activities within multi-age groups. The days fun activities will commence with an assembly and special school lunch on the oval where students will get to sample cuisine from around the world that theyve made in their groups. Students are encouraged to wear any outfit they have from around the world or orange which is the colour of Harmony Day. If you are interested in helping us celebrate Harmony Day wed love to hear from you. Mrs Tania White 2

Mr. Jamieson 6J INTERSCHOOL SPORTS On Friday the 18th of February, level 4 participated in interschool sports for the first time this year. The sports for the summer competition (term 1) are as follows: t ball- girls, t ball- boys, volleystars, bat tennis and kanga cricket. The first six weeks of the season are practise matches culminating in a round robin style lightning premiership day on Friday 1st April, which is to be held at Mentone Grammar playing fields in Keysborough. Round 1 was against Cheltenham East. T ball- girls Won 19-14. All the girls played well as a team. Well done to Bianca for hitting the winning runs and to Claudia K for getting seven people out. 2T 3S 3S 2S 2S 2S 5W 3L 2T T ball- boys Won 22-14. After a slow start, where scores were level after the 1st innings, we really stepped up a gear in the second half of the game to run out comprehensive victors. The boys fielded exceptionally well running out many fielders and taking some suburb catches. Our strength looks to be our batting and out of a potential 30 runs, we were able to get 22 people make it to the home base. Great effort by Anthony M who hit two big hits that resulted in home runs and Taylan U for making the winning run. A big thank to the whole team, hopefully we can continue this form next week against Le Page. Cricket Lost 50-82 runs. Cheltenham East won the toss and put us into bat. It was a good team effort with the bat. Top scorers were from the partnership of Yael H and Charlie W. When Cheltenham East batted our best bowlers were Harry P and Mohammed T. Overall it was a good match for our first game. Bat Tennis 3
