Course Syllabus Faculty Study Program Subject/Code/Credits/Semester Description : Education and Teacher Training : English Teaching : Literature I / 1215450 / 2/ VI : This subject introduces the students the basic concepts and skills necessitated to appreciate English poems. The topics covered are (1) introduction to poetry, (2) meaning of poems, (3) denotation and connotation, (4) imagery, and (5) figurative languages. Besides discussing those topics, students (individually and in groups) are also assigned to write papers about their responses and analysis of selected poems. Students are able to communicate their responses and analysis on poems. : Parlin Pardede

Competency Standard Lecturer Course Requirements: 1. Prerequisite subjects: a. Reading I, II, III, IV b. Extensive Reading c. Writing I, II 2.

Attendance: Not less than 80% attendance is required in this course. Participation is 25% of the overall grade for this course. This includes being in classes on time with all the necessary materials, participating in class and blog discussions, and completing all in-class and out-of-class assignments. Reading Assignments. Please make sure you find and read all the assigned texts regularly for it will enable you to master the class materials and finish the assignment papers. 1

The group presentation paper should cover: (a) introductory paragraph, in which the general meaning detailed meaning and poets intention are presented (in 1-2 paragraph); (b) appreciation/analysis on specific elements of the poem; and concluding paragraph. At the end, any references used should be listed, and the text of the poem should be attached to the paper. (See Analysis of Wordsworths I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud as a sample).
