Beekeeping Enthusiasts, You are invited to attend one of the largest and most educational beekeeping schools in the State of Ohio. The 2012 Southwestern Ohio Beekeeper School will be held at the Oasis Conference Center on Saturday, March 24th. The program is designed to be educational for anyone interested in honeybees, with programs for the beginning and moderately experienced beekeeper. Vendors will also have beekeeping equipment for sale throughout the day. Important for 2012: Limited to the first 350 pre-registered participants. No walk-ins or late registrations will be accepted. Participants must be one of the first 350 people to pre-register. The following are some important reminders about the 2012 Beekeeper School: Registration deadline is March 1, 2012. Last year, registration closed well before the deadline. Information and registration forms can be found on-line at http://warren.osu.edu . Registration fee is $35 for adults and $25 for youth under 17 years of age. Checks should be made payable to OSU Extension Warren County. Mail your check and registration form to: Ohio State University Extension Attn: Beekeeper School 320 E. Silver Street, Suite 101 Lebanon, OH 45036 No refunds are possible. We have to pay for your meal whether you show up or not. No confirmation of your registration will be sent to you. This program is sponsored by Ohio State University Extension in Butler, Clermont and Warren Counties.

Southwestern Ohio Beekeeper School Schedule of Events Vendors will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Door prize winners will be posted on a board after lunch. Please check for your name prior to leaving the school. To claim your door prize, you must show your name badge at the door prize table. Door prizes will not be mailed and must be picked-up by 3:00 p.m. Please turn in your evaluation after the conclusion of your final break-out session. There will be no final wrap-up session. This is the class for new and absolute beginning beekeepers. Discussions will include what it takes to be a beekeeper, where you can and cant keep bees, time commitments and costs to start a hive. An outline of the process and equipment needs will be covered during this educational session.

Break-out Sessions #3 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. 3A Seasonal Management - Part I Mark Egloff Greene County Beekeeper
What to do and when to do it. You will be led step-by-step through a calendar year of managing your bee hives.

1B Tips for Assessing the Queens Productivity (and Finding Her If Necessary) Dr. Larry Connor Beekeeping Author & Expert
Many beekeepers love to hunt for the queen when its not really necessary. Learn tips to visually assess her productivity and if necessary, how to best locate her in the hive.

3B Starting with 2 Hives Dr. Larry Connor Beekeeping Author & Expert
Many new beekeepers fail when they start with just one hive. Learn the advantages of starting out with 2 hives. This is a very popular talk from Dr. Connor and will illicit interesting discussion from both new and experienced beekeepers.

1C Pests of the Hive Andrew Kartal Southwestern Ohio Beekeeper


Learn how to identify and control common pests of the hive.

3C Diseases of the Hive Andrew Kartal Southwestern Ohio Beekeeper


Learn to identify and control common diseases of the hive.

1D Be an Advocate for Bees Margaret Reid Reids Apiary & Bee-tique


If beekeepers dont educate the public and politicians about the importance of beekeeping, then who will? Learn how to become a better advocate for bees and beekeepers. Margaret will share tips on public speaking and how to become more involved in public policy decisions as they relate to beekeeping.

3D Native Bees of Ohio Dr. Karen Goodell The Ohio State University
Learn about the other pollinators from an expert in the field. Ohio is home to many native bees and during this session, you will learn about them, their habits and why native bees are so important to Ohios ecology.

This class picks up where Beekeeping 101 left off. This session is about managing your hives, from installing your packages to winterizing your colony. Learn about spring feeding options, queen productivity and health, equipment needs as your colony grows and harvesting honey. Alex will even cover the wows and yucks of being a beekeeper.

4B Think Like a Bee Bill & Margaret Reid Reids Apiary & Bee-tique
This session will help you to better understand colony behavior so that you can more easily work with your bees.

2B Creating Habitat to Attract Pollinators Dr. Karen Goodell The Ohio State University
Learn about creating a habitat that attracts pollinators. Dr. Goodell has been a featured speaker at many conferences on this subject and will provide useful information to increase the population of pollinators around your home.

4C Bottling & Marketing Honey Carmen Conrad Conrad Hive and Honey
Learn about bottling and marketing honey, including information about regulations and the label. If you are planning to start selling honey, this session is a must!

2C Tips for Removing Bees from Structures Dave Heilman Ohio Honey Farms
Increase your colonies and possibly pad your pocketbook by learning how to remove bees from structures.

4D A Picture History of Beekeeping Equipment Dave Heilman Ohio Honey Farms


Dave will lead everyone through history with pictures of old beekeeping equipment from around the world and how it evolved into what we use today.

2D A Touch of Honey Gourmet Cooking with Chef Todd Kelly Chef Todd Kelly Famous Chef, Author & Beekeeper
Todd Kelly is the Executive Chef for the Orchids at Palm Court in the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. While Todd has been the head of the hotels culinary department, Orchids has been named Cincinnatis Top Restaurant in 2011 by Zagat Survey and one of the Top 50 Restaurants in the U.S. by Open Table (2010). In 2011, he was named the ACF Chef of the Year. Beyond his exploits in the kitchen, Todd is an author (Todd Kellys Orchids at Palm Court), television celebrity chef and beekeeper. Yes, you read that right. Todd is an enthusiastic beekeeper, keeping hives atop the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel in downtown Cincinnati. Todd will demonstrate various recipes and cooking techniques using local and artisan honeys. Chef Todd will have his book available at the school and is excited to talk cooking with his fellow beekeeping enthusiasts.
