Include collaborators, medium(s), and what you intend to accomplish. An imaginative blend of non-fiction narrative and poetry, two of Dubuque writer Kevin Kochs books, The Driftless Land: Spirit of Place in the Upper Mississippi Valley and Skiing at Midnight take their readers on trails through this unique part of the Upper Midwest. When combined, the literary works form a rich statement of not only place, but also humanity as it relates to and is transformed by place. The Driftless Land media project incorporates excerpts from these two volumes with stunning visual images of the Upper Mississippi Valley and an original musical score, composed by local musician Robert Dunn, to create a piece of art that encompasses literature, music and film. The completed film, with its emphasis on land and history, strengthens the communities of the Driftless Land. With the funds received from Art Gumbo, Craig Schaefer, production coordinator for the film, will be able to produce 150 copies ($4.27 each; $640), using the Loras College Productions equipment and facilities. These copies will then be distributed free of charge to schools, colleges, libraries, organizations, local cable channels, and visitors centers around the area for use in educating the community on literature, music and the spectacular distinctiveness of this region. How will your project impact the Dubuque community? The film, with its emphasis on land and history, will, through the arts, strengthen the Tri-State area that is the Driftless Land. Viewers will grow in knowledge of and appreciation for the unique history and geological formations that surround them and for the area we call home. The primary goal of the project, to make the literary works and inspiration of Kevin Koch and the music of Bob Dunn more accessible to the public, will not only enlighten viewers as to the magnificence of this region, but also expose them to well-written literature and original music.

Project summary describe the specific project you would like to accomplish with these funds. Include collaborators, medium(s), and what you intend to accomplish. DubuqueFest Fine Arts Festival is the citys only multi-faceted all arts festivals. One of the goals of the festival is to offer all-access free educational hands-on visual arts experiences for all ages. DubuqueFest has commissioned painter Keith Huie (Mineral Point, WI) to lead a community collaborative painting that will be created on-site during the festival, May 18-20, 2012, in the Washington Park area in conjunction with the Art Fair on Saturday & Sunday. The community/festival-goers will have the opportunity to stop by and paint with Keith throughout the weekend. Anyone can participate and there is no pre-registration needed. It is collaborative art in motion. Keith will lead/guide the collaborative painting so the result is a cohesive piece suitable for exhibition. At the end of the weekend the completed piece will be donated and installed (at DubuqueFest's expense), as part of their permanent collection, at the Crescent Community Clinic. The canvas will be custom-built based on the space/dimensions from the clinic. To make the piece more versatile for hanging we may create several panels that can be hung together or easily separated to hang individually. Our underlying goal is to build community through collaborative, interactive visual art. How will your project impact the Dubuque community? This community collaboration serves as a model for the role that the arts play in helping to develop the broader cultural landscape of the Dubuque community. This sense of ownership and collective results in a cultural vibrancy that aids in the retention of young people in our city, initiates a sense of commitment to meeting our neighbors, serves as ongoing testimony to the power of collaboration, stimulates creative thought, and raises the awareness that fine arts exploration can be accessible to everyone.

DubuqueFest committee members Katie Duffy and Trish Feldman will document the creation of the collaborative painting as it develops throughout the weekend. From blank canvas, to Keiths vision, to interactive collaboration, to the finished piece, and final installation. DubuqueFest committee will present a video created from this documentation to the audience at a subsequent Art Gumbo event. If awarded, how will you use the funding towards the realization of your project? Please include details of how the grant will be used. DubuqueFest is seeking funding for the materials needed to create the painting; canvas, stretcher bars, paint, brushes, installation hardware, and artist stipend. DubuqueFest will match any Art Gumbo funding with both cash and in-kind trade for marketing costs, volunteer time, staff time, and any other neccesary materials (aprons, tarps for protecting public surfaces, washing station, etc.) needed for the project, and any cash supplement needed for the artist stipend for Keith Huie.
