STUDENTS AGAINST IMPAIRED DRIVING
Students Against Impaired Driving will bring you our special SAID WEEK in May once again this year with various activities aiming to curb impaired driving. This group, for over 17years has been spreading the message that substance use, specifically alcohol and drugs, does not mix with driving and robs us of the lives of those we care about. Stayner Collegiates S.A.I.D. group has the hope that nobody in our school or community should lose their life because of substance abuse combined with driving. Would you like to get involved in this very important group in the school? Together we can effect change in the way our friends and family think. Listen for announcements of our meetings (we usually meet on Thursdays at 11:30 in Room 118) and come take part in some of our fun and awareness-raising activities! Please dont drive impaired! CHESS CLUB The Chess Club continues to meet in Room 118 at noon on Fridays. Bring your lunch and come join us! Room 118 will welcome you on other days during the lunch hour when possible. FRENCH DEPARTMENT
The French Department welcomes Ms. Lamb this semester! Ms. Lamb is doing a great job with the grade 9 applied students in period 1. Once again in semester 2, students taking French are encouraged to work hard at completing their work on time and to ask for help during lunchtime (we run a French Clinic Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 12:40) or after school when in difficulty with new structures or concepts. Touching base with the French teacher while in the midst of a major unit project or the day before an important unit test can make a huge difference in terms of your success. Students are reminded of the French Department policy on the use of the internet for translation from English to French. Like plagiarism, the use of internet translation sites is strictly forbidden. If in doubt, check with your teacher. Do not put your success or that of others into jeopardy and do be aware that many of the sites do a very poor job. Preferably, use your own brain powerand a French-English dictionary! Bonne chance ce semestre!!
The "FRENCH CLINIC" is now open at lunch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:00-12:30 Mr. Arnott will also happily make time for you before or after school. See him to make arrangements.

The Varsity Girls Hockey team had a very successful 2011-2012 season. They finished with the season 6-1-1, losing their only game in the Georgian Bay Championship against the defending champions from St. Thomas Aquinas in Tottenham. Special thanks are extended to our community coaches Kaitlyn MacDonald and Bart Chapman. Without their help, it would not have been possible to have a team. Best wishes to our grade 12 players who are moving on to other successes next year! Congratulations to all girls on a great season!
PLEASE REMEMBER TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF ANY ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, EMAIL ADDRESSS, HEALTH OR OTHER INFORMATION CHANGES FOR YOUR CHILD. THANK YOU!
Stayner students recently participated at the Sears Drama Festival for the 11th year in a row. The festival, held this year in Barrie at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, had 15 entries from all corners of Simcoe County. The ten students representing SCI worked very hard writing, rehearsing and performing their one-act play, Struggles, once at the festival and once for their fellow students at SCI. At the awards ceremony Stayner picked up an award for direction (Mary Bruer) and an award for writing (Alekz Aubry). All participants should be very proud of their accomplishment and the difficult work that went into the production. Besides Alekz and Mary the following students round out the cast and crew: Jennifer Dewan, Eric Potts, Natasha Milley, Sarah Miller, Samantha Kinghan, Jiyeon Lim, Melanie Connell and Riley Ekman.

We had over 80 students who visited the mobile facility. The bus is equipped with a dental chair, dental personnel and this mobile facility visits and connects with all schools in our Board. We thank the SMDHU for their visit and school community partnerships with SCI.
CYBER GNOMES COMPETE IN BOSTON REGIONALS As this edition of the Spartan Speaks goes to press the SCI Cyber Gnomes team are in Boston, MA for the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition from 22 - 24 March, 2012 defending their 3rd place finish in 2011. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was created to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentorbased programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster wellrounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. The SCI Cyber Gnomes, in their 6th year, has embraced these values and have taken the challenge this year of building a robot that will compete against robots from 24 other schools from the USA, Mexico and Turkey. In this years challenge, Rebound Rumble, student-built robots compete to score points by shooting basketballs into hoops of varying heights during a match of 2 minutes, 15 seconds. The game opens with a Hybrid Period, when robots operate independently from their student drivers. During these 15 seconds, one robot on each alliance may be controlled using Microsoft Kinect. At the end of the game, the robots attempt to climb bridges to balance with other teams for bonus points. You can check out the REBOUND RUMBLETM animation at http://youtu.be/nOXsdhZZSdM. Canadian Event -- After Boston, the Cyber Gnomes will compete at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, ON from 29 31 March, 2012. The event is free for anyone who wants to come and cheer on our team to success! SCI will be organizing a Spartan Spirit Bus for the 30th of March. If your child wants to attend to cheer on the Cyber Gnomes, complete the Field Trip permission form and return it to the Office by Wednesday March 28. Lets Go, Cyber Gnomes!!!
