BUY IN? BUY OUT? A CLARIFICATION FOR PARENTS...

There are times during the school year when a special event is scheduled and students have the option of "buying in" to the event. The "admission fee" for these events are generally fund raising opportunities for the groups hosting the event. There have been two recent "buy in" events -- one for the girls' hockey team championship game at the Stayner Arena on Friday March 2 and the other for the Sears Drama group presenting the play that was written, directed, and acted by SCI drama students on Wednesday March 7. Students who do not "buy in" to these events are expected to attend regularly scheduled classes. Attendance is taken to ensure that students do not "skip" both class and the event. If you have any questions about Buy In events, please don't hesitate to contact Ms. Ellerby, Vice Principal.

DRESS CODE REMINDERS

With the early onset of spring weather, parents/ guardians are reminded about the SCI student dress code. Students should have an uninterrupted line of clothing covering shoulders through mid-thigh at a bare minimum (pardon the pun). Students who are not properly dressed will be asked to go home to change into more acceptable attire. Parents will be contacted. Thank you for your assistance in maintaining a respectable environment, suitable for learning.

Stayner Collegiates S.A.I.D. group has the hope that nobody in our school or community should lose their life because of substance abuse combined with driving. Would you like to get involved in this very important group in the school? Together we can effect change in the way our friends and family think. FRENCH DEPARTMENT
The French Department welcomes Ms. Lamb this semester! Ms. Lamb is doing a great job with the grade 9 applied students in period 1. Once again in semester 2, students taking French are encouraged to work hard at completing their work on time and to ask for help during lunchtime (we run a French Clinic Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 12:40) or after school when in difficulty with new structures or concepts. Touching base with the French teacher while in the midst of a major unit project or the day before an important unit test can make a huge difference in terms of your success. Students are reminded of the French Department policy on the use of the internet for translation from English to French. Like plagiarism, the use of internet translation sites is strictly forbidden. If in doubt, check with your teacher. Do not put your success or that of others into jeopardy and do be aware that many of the sites do a very poor job. Preferably, use your own brain powerand a French-English dictionary! Bonne chance ce semestre!!

The "FRENCH CLINIC" is now open at lunch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:00-12:30 Mr. Arnott will also happily make time for you before or after school. See him to make arrangements.

Stayner students recently participated at the Sears Drama Festival for the 11th year in a row. The festival, held this year in Barrie at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, had 15 entries from all corners of Simcoe County. The ten students representing SCI worked very hard writing, rehearsing and performing their one-act play, Struggles, once at the festival and once for their fellow students at SCI. At the awards ceremony Stayner picked up an award for direction (Mary Bruer) and an award for writing (Alekz Aubry). All participants should be very proud of their accomplishment and the difficult work that went into the production. Besides Alekz and Mary the following students round out the cast and crew: Jennifer Dewan, Eric Potts, Natasha Milley, Sarah Miller, Samantha Kinghan, Jiyeon Lim, Melanie Connell and Riley Ekman.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was created to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentorbased programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster wellrounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. The SCI Cyber Gnomes, in their 6th year, has embraced these values and have taken the challenge this year of building a robot that will compete against robots from 24 other schools from the USA, Mexico and Turkey. In this years challenge, Rebound Rumble, student-built robots compete to score points by shooting basketballs into hoops of varying heights during a match of 2 minutes, 15 seconds. The game opens with a Hybrid Period, when robots operate independently from their student drivers. During these 15 seconds, one robot on each alliance may be controlled using Microsoft Kinect. At the end of the game, the robots attempt to climb bridges to balance with other teams for bonus points. You can check out the REBOUND RUMBLETM animation at http://youtu.be/nOXsdhZZSdM. Canadian Event -- After Boston, the Cyber Gnomes will compete at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, ON from 29 31 March, 2012.
