1992- Passage of the 27th Amendment Said that Congress could not receive an approved raise until the next election, thus giving the people the opportunity to determine whose salary they would be paying with their tax dollars.

1993Combat roles for women in the US military

1994. NAFTA In 1994 the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) was signed by Mexico, America, and Canada.

1995The Oklahoma City Bombing April 19, 1995: 168 people, including 8 Federal Marshals, were killed in the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were charged and convicted in this case. For their roles in the bombing Terry Nichols received a life sentence and Timothy McVey was sentenced to death.

19961996 Atlanta Olympics bombing Two people were killed and nearly 200 injured when a bomb exploded in a crowded pavillion at the Atlanta 2000 Summer Olympics. Police would later arrest Eric Rudolph for the criminal act in late May of 2003.

1997Paducah High School shootings Mentally ill Michael Carneal, 15, was charged with killing three Paducah high school classmates and wounding five others who were in a prayer circle. December 1997 On December 1st 1997, Michael Carneal went to school like a regular Monday. The only difference was that he had 3 loaded guns with him, a shot gun, rifle, and a pistol. He got out of the car and opened fire on a group of 14 students in a prayer group. The principal came out and Mike surrendered to the principal. The person who was heading the prayer group rushed Mike and thats when Mike gave up the gun. This has had a major affect on schools in a way that you cant bring any kind of weapon on campus.

1998America bombs Iraq: AGAIN! Following a weapons inspector agreement by the UN, on December 17, in the middle of Clinton's impeachment trial, President Clinton orders American and British airstrikes on Iraq.

1999President Clinton is Acquitted not lewinsky In February, the Senate acquits the president of perjury and obstruction of justice, after the House of Representatives had convicted him.

2000U.S. presidential election closest in decades; Bush's slim lead in Florida leads to automatic recount in that state (Nov. 7-8). Republicans file federal suit to block manual recount of Florida presidential election ballots sought by Democrats (Nov. 11). Florida Supreme Court rules election hand count may continue (Nov. 21). U.S. Supreme Court orders halt to manual recount of Florida votes (Dec. 9). Supreme Court seals Bush victory by 5-4; rules there can be no further recounting (Dec. 12). See 2000 election chronology


2001 Terrorists attack United States. Hijackers ram jetliners into twin towers of New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane crashes 80 mi outside of Pittsburgh (Sept. 11). Toll of dead and injured in thousands. Within days, Islamic militant Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist network are identified as the parties behind the attacks. Early in the morning on September 11 2001, 2 planes where run into the Twin Towers in New York. Over 3,000 people were killed many of them where rescue aid. There were two additional planes that where hijacked, one crashed into a part of the pentagon, and the second crash landed into a field in Pennsylvania, probably headed toward the white house.

2002President Bush's first State of the Union address vows to expand the fight on terrorism and labels Iran, Iraq, and North Korea "an axis of evil" (Jan. 29).

2003 Space shuttle Columbia explodes, killing all 7 astronauts (Feb. 1). When the space shuttle Columbia went into space it was hit by a piece of foam at take off, NASA did not see a problem with it so they kept the mission going. They did not even ask for a telescope to monitor the damage. The shuttle worked fine until it got closer to earth, thats when the gages started to miss read and the left wing gages went off the chart. Then Houston made contact with the Columbia and in the middle of a sentence, the Columbia was lost

2004 Congress extends tax cuts due to expire at the end of 2005 (Sept. 23).

2005 Hurricane Katrina wreaks catastrophic damage on the Gulf coast; more than 1,000 die and millions are left homeless. Americans are shaken not simply by the magnitude of the disaster but by how ill-prepared all levels of government are in its aftermath. (Aug. 25-30). See also Hurricane Katrina TimelineOn August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast devastating many towns. Hurricane Katrina left thousands homeless and over 1,800 dead. The levees in New Orleans broke and so 80% of the city was underwater. 20% of New Orleans population was trapped there without food, or good drinking water. Hurricane Katrina was so bad that 15% of the cities police force just walked off the job, so looting became ever so present in the city. New Orleans was a massive pool of sewage, chemicals, and dead bodies floating around. During the first days after the disaster all emergency aid was inadequate

2006 President Bush uses his veto power for the first time, striking down legislation that would have expanded the number of stem cell lines available for embryonic research using federal financing. (July 19).

2007 The minimum wage increases to $5.85, up from $5.15. It's the first increase in 10 years. The wage will increase 70 cents each year through 2009, when it will be $7.25 an hour (July 24).

2008The U.S. Supreme Court rules, 5 to 4, that prisoners at Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, have a right to challenge their detention in federal court.

2009Hundreds of thousands of people watched in front of the Capitol as President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are sworn into office. Obama makes history as the first AfricanAmerican president. When Barack Obama was sworn into office it was a major deal to the African American race because he was the first colored president. When he was sworn into office over a million people went to see this significant event, people come from all over the world came to see this. When President Obama made his speech he did not focus on the fact that he was the first African American president.

2010President Obama presents to Congress his 2011 budget of $3.8 trillion and his 10-year budget plan. The budget includes a $1.6 trillion deficit in the next fiscal year, which begins in October, and then steadily declines over the following 10 years. Included in the budget are cuts to domestic programs and spending; some programs, including NASA's return trips to the moon, will be eliminated all together

2011U.S. Rep Anthony D. Weiner resigns from office due to a scandal over his online behavior, which involved sending explicit photos of himself to several women via Facebook and Twitter. Weiner is a seven-term Democrat and, prior to the scandal, a leading candidate for the next mayor of New York.
