CALL TO WORSHIP: John 21:1-6 Jesus appeared again to the disciples, this the third time at the Sea of Galilee. This is how he did it: One day, Simon Peter announced, "I'm going fishing." The rest of the disciples replied, "We're going with you." And we went out and got in the boat. They caught nothing that night. When the sun came up, Jesus was standing on the beach, but we didn't recognize him. Jesus spoke to them: "Good morning! Did you catch anything for breakfast?" We answered, "No." He said, "Throw the net off the right side of the boat and see what happens." We did what he said. All of a sudden there were so many fish in it, we weren't strong enough to pull it in! The Missions of the Month for April are One Great Hour of Sharing (to address the needs of Hunger/Poverty) and Compassion (HIV/AIDS). Please keep these ministries in your prayers. Your support to One Great Hour of Sharing changes peoples lives by working with communities to enable them to produce, store, and sell their food, offering training, tools, and seeds to help communities return to food security and by teaching Self-Development techniques. Compassion (HIV/AIDS) Globally, 46 million children have lost one or both parents to the HIV/Aids epidemic. Ninety percent of them live in Subsaharan Africa. While new HIV infection rates are falling in most parts of the world, they increased by 60% in Africa in 2010 and in 2011. When children in Africa are orphaned they must drop out of school to look for work. They often live on the streets in poverty so extreme we can hardly imagine it. Compassion works in Africa to educate the general population about preventing HIV infections, provide medical care for those already infected, and care for the overwhelming number of children who have lost their families to this tragic epidemic. The Garden for God will soon be up and running again for 2012! Once the ground is ready we will be planting carrots, lettuces and lots of other healthy things! As always there will be a sign-up sheet in the narthex for watering and weeding. However, if you feel that signing up for a week at a time is unrealistic for you, you can still help! Maybe you have some extra time one afternoon or 10 minutes before a meeting or church function. Just head across the street and pull some weeds or turn on the sprinkler for a bit. Garden tools, the hose, and the sprinkler are kept there for your use anytime and your efforts will be much appreciated by many local hungry people! In addition to the Garden for God, a new group is being formed to collect and distribute food that would otherwise be discarded. Many places such as farms, farm markets, or stores may discard food that they cannot sell. Melanie Richman would like to hold a brainstorming meeting right after worship service this Sunday in the sanctuary to try and come up with ideas on how to share some of this otherwise wasted food with those in need. If you are interested and willing to help out, please use the sign up sheet in the narthex. Any questions, see Melanie. Vacation Bible School will be here before we know it and this years VBS program is Sky. At Sky VBS, kids discover that by trusting God, everything is possible. On May 11th and 12th, many of the youth in our church (and their leaders) will be participating in the 30-Hour Famine, a World-Vision project to fight hunger throughout the world. They will be fasting from Friday after lunch until a Saturday evening dinner. There is much activity during this timethey will participate in a local service project and many activities that will teach them what it means to be truly hungry and needy. We will be asking that someone (or a small group perhaps) prepare a simple meal for us on Saturday. Eventually we will be asking for donations for the 30-hour famine. But for now, please begin to pray for those participating in the fast, as well as for those the project will feed. Local food banks such as Disciples Pantry in Woodstown and Peters Pantry in Elmer continue to be in need of items. We are collecting donations such as peanut butter, jelly, tuna, cereals, pasta, sauce, soups, mac-ncheese, rice and any canned good. Please leave your contribution in the box marked in the narthex and we will make sure it gets there. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
