Los Angeles County Faces Troubles Due to Santa Ana Winds

On Thursday and Friday of the week the Santa Ana winds struck, many school districts, including Pasadena Unified School District, were forced to close. Lea Chang Feature Editor On Thursday December 1, Santa Ana winds forced the county of Los Angeles to declare a state of emergency. The windstorm struck mainly the western San Gabriel Valley and hit other areas, closing several school districts, delaying flights at Los Angeles International Airport, and toppling trees and poles onto unfortunate cars. The winds built up on Wednesday, November 30 and lasted through Friday, December 2. Meteorologists claim that this type of destruction caused by wind has not been seen in the last decade. The most destructive of these winds reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour and knocked down power lines, raising fears of a wildfire. The hardest hit areas reportedly included Alhambra, Arcadia, Altadena, Monrovia, Pasadena, San Gabriel, and Sierra Madre, cities that urged both adults and children to stay home due to the fallen trees and poles in the road. These tall objects torn down by the raging winds crushed cars and often fell on homes. Residents were advised [Please see WINDS on page 3]

Choir to Perform City of Diamond Bar Hosts Annual in Winter Concert Candy Cane Craft Fair
TUNE: Ticket sales started November 21 and will end on December 9. Tickets can be purchased in the choir room during lunch or at the door for $7 for students and $10 for adults. Michelle Lee Business Manager Diamond Bar High Schools Choir Department will present its annual winter choir concert in the DBHS theater on Thursday, December 8 and Friday, December 9, at 7 p.m. Choir members and the choir director, Patty Breitag, assembled the concert in order to showcase the members talents and to prepare them for choir competitions to be held in the spring. Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Marquis, Solitaire, and several solo singers will perform in the production. Solos were selected by Breitag through an individual audition. Junior Euna Kim, a Marquis member, shared, We dedicate a lot of time into really trying to bring out our best performance so that the audience can enjoy their time at the concert. Songs such as Angels We Have Heard on High, Candlelight Carol, and Hiney Mah Tov will be sung by Marquis. Some of the songs that Solitaire will be singing include Angels on High and Hey Santa. Choir is very different, said senior Joseph Yang, a member of Marquis and a qualifier for the Southern California All District Choir. He expressed, its a combination of everything together: dancing, singing, acting, and working together with [the] band and other musical ensembles. Its going to be a different experience. Ticket sales started November 21 and will end on December 9. Tickets can be purchased in the choir room during lunch or at the door for $7 for students and $10 for adults. After the fall choir concert on October 5, all four choirs began preparing for their winter choir concert. On December 2 and December 3, Marquis performed in its Winter Winds concert, which featured a holiday solo medley, a choral program, and a Christmas Eve medley. They rehearsed everyday in class and every Wednesday after school. Members practiced with their respective sections and individuals worked with a designated student leader. The majority of the rehearsals was done during class as a whole. Everyone should come and enjoy the concert because theyll be impressed by what they hear! We would like to open the doors and have a full house! commented Breitag. HOLIDAY: DB4Youth hosted a snack bar selling donuts, nachos, and pizza. Members walked around to place orders for crafters and served the food to them. Holly Liu Asst. News Editor The City of Diamond Bar held its 6th annual Candy Cane Craft Fair at the Diamond Bar Center last Saturday, December 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The city [was] very excited to host this event once again. It is great to let residents have an opportunity to see the many unique crafts people came up with, commented the Community Services Coordinator Andee Tarazon. There were a total of 71 crafters present this year. [The Candy Cane Craft Fair] is very wonderful this year because so many people came. The staff is very nice and [this whole event] is extremely organized, stated crafter Sheri Tingesdahl. They displayed and sold a variety of hand-made goods that included chocolates, holiday crafts, jewelry, knitted goods, and photos. Some crafts and goods were available for sale. There was also a station that allowed attendees to take pictures with Santa Claus I have been attending [the Candy Cane Craft Fair] for

Advanced drama students entertained young elementary kids in their childrens play, Hairy Potter, which was performed in the Diamond Bar High School theater. The show was open to the public on December 3 and to elementary students from December 5 to today. The play was freely adapted from some of the Harry Potter characters, various fairytale characters, and even characters from the movie Tron. Some of the roles were Harry Potter played by senior Jonathan Contreras, Hermione Granger played by senior Amanda Moraton, and Voldemort played by senior Jessica Barrios. The performance incorporated an interactive element into the script. Actors asked for audience members help, sat with the viewers, and even used audience members to participate in the play. I looked forward to seeing all the little kids faces [even though] it was difficult to manage my British accent [when performing], shared Contreras. The script was written by advanced drama students seniors Linn Chang and Yasmine Shahbaz. They started writing about six weeks ago, and the drama class had

Courtesy of Jocelyn Hsu approximately two and a half weeks to prepare for the show. Other students in the class contributed to the story outline by suggesting characters that they wanted to be and Chang and Shahbaz incorporated the roles into the plot. Students picked their individual roles. The entire play was directed and run by the actors, with occasional help from Drama Teacher Peter Bland. My expectations are that the audience enjoys it but equally and more so that the cast feels as though they put on a really good product in the amount of time that theyve had to do, stated Bland. During the preparation process, the students tried to make most of their own costumes, or parts of their costumes. In order to make these costumes, a costume workshop was held, during which professional costume designers came to guide and help the actors. Hairy Potter was geared towards young children from local elementary schools in the Walnut Valley Unified School District. The schools were notified and invited by drama teacher Peter Bland. Some of the schools in attendance were Castle Rock Elementary School, Evergreen Elementary School, Maple Hill Elementary School, and Walnut Elementary School. From December 5 to today, there were three shows per day. Tickets cost $4 at the door on December 3 and there was no presale. Elementary students watched the play for free. Attendee freshman Jenny Chuang commented, I thought [the play] was great. Even though it was [meant] for children, I thought it was suitable [for] adults. Advanced drama students worked really hard for it and it paid off.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas...Shoppers browse through stations, looking at unique crafts for the holiday. Holly Liu several years and this event has grown a lot. I think it is very good to buy things people make to decorate my house or [to give] as a present, said attendee Mary Kerr. Arts and crafts activities were also available for children attendees. Parents could drop off their children of five to 12 years of age at the Santa Workshop room where the kids were able to write letters to Santa and make bookmarks and bracelets. Santas Workshop was added just a few years ago. It really gives parents an opportunity to shop without any distractions and its a fun way for children to pass time, commented Tarazon. Children of ages 15 and under were given the opportunity to design and paint tiles provided byColor Me Mine. The top 50 designs that expressed the ways in which parks made the world better will be chosen to be displayed on the community wall of Washington Street Park, explained Tarazon. This event was open to the public and admission and parking was free for all attendees. Tarazon commented, This event has expanded mainly due to promotion. We now advertise to a variety of places. Advertising was the key to informing people of this event and getting them to come. This event grows every year and is a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season.

A&E Editor Diamond Bar High School Day at the Barnes and Noble in Chino Hills was held on Saturday, November 19 in order to raise funds for DBHS. It was the 3rd annual event at Barnes and Nobles. Twenty percent of all purchases made in the Barnes and Nobles, either in the actual store or in the Starbucks located inside, were donated to DBHS. In addition, an online fundraiser was held the week after the event. The funds were raised to purchase new school supplies and materials. Pamela Hunter, the media technician of the school library, coordinated the fundraiser. Senior Nivedha Baskarapandia commented, What made it truly successful, though, was the look on peoples faces with the performances and knowing [that] they were supporting us. DBHS students from the California Scholastic Federation helped fundraise by volunteering to gift-wrap newly purchased books. This service was free, but donations were appreciated. A variety of performances from various DBHS performing arts groups exhibited their talents and skills throughout the day. Some of the groups included All Male Dance Crew, Chamber Choir, the drama department, and Solitaire. Junior Brandon Kim from AMDC explained, We had fun dancing because its our passion and we had a good time. The drama department started out the day by performing excerpts of its new childrens play. Junior Joshua Baek commented, "I saw many people from our school there and it was interesting to see fellow students like [junior] Ryan Gatus and [junior] Maxine Kimberlin dress up for the children. It amazes me that so many students not only enjoy supporting DBHS, but [also] enjoy reading as well." The performance was followed by two choir groups, Chamber and Solitaire. Local band Excuse My French also performed. The band performed a total of six songs including Radio Song and A Cause de Garcon. The day ended with a duet performance by Marquis members junior Matthew Tanaka and sophomore Tayler Lanning who performed a rendition of Katy Perrys E.T. Hunter commented, It was successful. Although we didnt do as well as we did the first year, we did do better than last year; especially with the economy, it was great.

THE BULLS EYE

Editorial

Room for One

Nikki Ongpoy Editorial Cartoonist Vice President Joe Biden stirred up controversy with his remarks regarding the overpopulation in America. Recently, staggering increases in population have begun to take a toll on the environment. China is especially well known for enforcing a policy that allows one child per family, and Biden says that he fully understands its reasoning for the restriction. Despite the sensitivity of this topic, Biden ventures further to suggest that the United States can somehow, act in a way on [the] problem thats much less severe than [Chinas], and maybe learn together from how we can do that. With this simple proclamation, Biden has deeply upset Americans with lack of regard about a policy that would result in limiting the rights of people and distorting the very definition of a family. Not only does he fail to realize the negative effects of allowing one child per family, but his statement is threatening to our civil liberties. Before condoning a policy like this, Biden has to realize the effects it would have in an American setting. Although he suggests that a less severe alternative to Chinas communist system might be understandable, one would still have to put a firm grip on abortions and sterilizations to control the population level. Mothers would not have the option of having more than one child; giving birth to a second would mean paying the price for breaking the law. Biden is condoning a government where parents are limited from having the choice of both a daughter and a son. In an era where freedom should reign, America needs to remain liberated from such oppressive ideas and reject Bidens attitude towards a surpresive government entirely. The government should never be allowed to put a handlebar on a mothers decision to have more than one child. Albeit the absurdity of Bidens comments, overpopulation still remains a large concern. Chinas policy has succeeded in preventing nearly 400 million births in the last three decades. Through strict enforcement and propaganda, this policy was able to succeed. However, there are still some regions in China where two children are allowed, depending on the circumstance. There are still plenty of other families in China who are granted opportunities to raise more than one child. Thus, Chinas own exceptions to the one-child policy should be noted before Bidens compromising mindset finds a place in Americas policies. Our countrys years of exercised freedom provide a reference that discourages the restriction of population control, and our liberated rights would never allow the policy to prevail. Placing a heavy restraint on parents who want more than one child diminishes the foundation of a democracy and demoralizes ethical standards of a human family. Despite Bidens concern for lack of resources and carbon dioxide emissions amongst the American people in todays society, strict prohibition is out of the question. Biden should look into other options for population regulation, before even mentioning the one child policy. We may not currently have a solution to the overpopulation in our country, but that does not mean the country should resort to limiting population. Citizens came to this country to escape unjust laws that discourage what should be our natural rights. Demeaning the American dream would only cause a catastrophe; nobody should favor a law that disables a mother from having two children. Biden needs to reconsider his statement and opt for another resolution that does not involve the unfair limitation on human rights.

School Compromises Education for Religion

Xing Yen Quek Asst. Photo Editor Shorter University, a private Christian school, is setting a new requirement that will force all incoming and current staff members to sign a Personal Lifestyle Statement that affirms their abstinence from behaviors prohibited by the Bible, such as, practicing or accepting homosexuality, premarital sex, and adultery. Any employee who refuses to sign this agreement will face unfair termination of their job as a consequence. The loss of ones job can bring devastating effects to his or her livelihood, brutally forcing employees to sign this agreement regardless of what they truly believe. Mandating this statement not only impedes on the rights of the employees, but also wrongfully judges an individual according to his or her beliefs. This unjustified discrimination towards ones personal views should not be implemented, as it does not benefit the schools goal of promoting a better lifestyle through education. As a private school, Shorter University is not funded by the federal government, which leads this university to believe that as an independent and religiously-affiliated institution, it reserves every right to hire only Christian employees that will abide by the universitys rules. Don Dowless, the president of Shorter University, stated that these rules were implemented in order to love and honor Jesus Christ. According to Dowless, agreeing to the policy is a way of showing ones faith to Christ; however, this is not a valid reason for the school to enforce these rules. One should not be obligated to profess the individuals love for Christ by following anothers personal views. Religion should never be used to discriminate against anyone in a work environment, private or public. This intolerance ultimately destroys the open learning environment of the university and makes the school appear to be more of a church rather than a practical educational facility. This form of learning will not provide a better future for the students. Individuals who wish to learn freely will find themselves trapped in an environment of discrimination and injustice. The limitations placed on the employees also prevent them from the pursuit of happiness, a right listed in the United States Constitution. Every U.S. citizen is entitled to the pursuit of happiness; therefore, it is wrong for the university to take away this privilege from the workers. The policy binds them to the preferences of the school and prevents them from expressing their own beliefs. The employees lose their freedom and rights by agreeing to this contract. Furthermore, by enforcing employees to sign the Personal Lifestyle Statement, the school is not only allowing students and staff members to openly judge one another, but they are also creating an enviornment where this becomes the new social standard . While the policy may place limitations on

This intolerance ultimately destroys the open learning environment of the university

certain acts like homosexuality, the university fails to recognize that the establishment of this policy infringes on the rights of the employees, as it encourages both them and the students to blindly judge others. Instead of changing for the betterment of the students, this new addition will only harm the students characters. Besides encroaching on the rights of individuals, the new policy will also diminish the chance for the school to find and provide the best professors for the students. As a result, the school will fail to provide the academic excellence it strives for. This unjust change will benefit neither the employees nor the students. The employees would have to face losing their jobs and the students would have to give up on the good education they rightfully deserve. The Personal Lifestyle Statement denounces the employees rights and alters their current living situation. The university has no right to mandate this policy on all the employees and burden them with a new lifestyle. This new requirement should be recalled in order to prevent further problems for the school and its staff members.

In order to keep our readers up-to-date on articles published in the Editorial section, The Bulls Eye is including a follow-up on a few select articles. The United States Fights for Libyas Rights On March 20, Asst. Editorial Editor Justin Park asserted his opinion on Americas military intervention in Libya amidst its violent protest against the nations de facto leader Muammar el-Gaddafi. On October 20, Libya was finally liberated from dictatorship as Gaddaffi was captured, beaten, and murdered by a group of rebels near his hometown of Sirte. His death was confirmed as a graphic video depicting his last moments was uploaded online for public viewing. Media Slants Wall Street Protest In the October issue, Feature Theme Editor Ruby Hwang criticized the medias misguiding depiction of the ongoing Occupy Wall Street demonstration. Since its inception, this protest movement against economic and social inequalities has garnered more supporters across the United States. The protesters expanded their locations to over 70 major cities in the U.S., in addition to college campuses including Harvard University. This momentous phenomenon, which has yielded over 4,600 arrests, 100 injuries, and eight deaths so far, is projected to continue for several more weeks. This Is It for Conrad Murray In the last issue published on October 26, Asst. Editorial Editor Justin Park analyzed the accusations surrounding Conrad Murray, the doctor of Michael Jackson convicted of involuntary murdering his patient through irresponsible administration of a lethal drug. The six-week-long legal battle, filled with endless testimonies and deliberations, finally came to a close on November 7, as the 12 jurors of Los Angeles courthouse unanimously declared Murray completely guilty of causing Jacksons premature death. On November 29, the judge sentenced Murray to four years in federal prison, the maximum punishment Murray could receive for his crime. Free Trade FTW Also in the October issue, Asst. News Editor Holly Liu discussed the advantages of establishing a free trade agreement with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea. Ever since the proposal of FTA, the passage of the pact has aroused a vehement response from all nations involved, particularly South Korea. More than 3,000 South Koreans, who claim that implementing new laws as a result of the FTA will deteriorate the economy, gathered in Seoul for a massive candlelight protest on November 5. Police force and water cannons were summoned at the site to combat the uprising violence amongst the demonstrators.

Kardashian Kashes Marriage for Millions

Sarah Cho Asst. A&E Editor In the past month, due to her highly publicized divorce from National Basketball Association player Kris Humphries, Kim Kardashian has unjustly been on the receiving end of some very stiff criticism. The unintelligent masses have erected towers of hate in order to try to spoil Kardashians perfect reputation. This criticism is completely uncalled for as Kardashians marriage was in fact undeniably real. Kardashian did not make money off of her wedding, unless you count the measly $15 million deal with E! to record and broadcast the four hour special, the $1 million deal with People magazine for an exclusive interview, or the other $2 million worth of contracts and discounts. She only made a paltry $18 million, a mere $250,000 a day for each day of marriage. It is really only a modest wedding gift from the media to the couple. After all, it would really only pay for 580 years of average college tuition. Even without the lack of financial motive, no one could doubt Kardashians honesty. After all, she is a true literary genius, an inspiration to us all. Her generous help scripting the episodes of her hit reality television show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians shows her true talent as she makes her vapid family of shallow women seem interesting and genuine. Kardashians success as an E! News correspondent was well earned by her talent of delivering hard news such as groundbreaking fashion trends and tips on organizing closets. She has also found immense success as an actress as shown by her unspeakably beautiful performance, which deserving of our respect and admiration. It is simply incomprehensible why so many would accuse this greatly loved woman of fraud. On the day of her beautifully executed wedding, Kardashian was inarguably in love with Humphries and was undoubtedly willing to spend the rest of her life with him. After all, they had

THE BULLS EYE

Every four years, the nation prepares for another presidential election. The candidates tour the country to speak at rallies and express their platform in an effort to garner more votes nationwide. They participate in publicized debates not only to compete against the other contenders, but also to demonstrate his or her competence as an ideal selection for presidency. One would expect high school elections to reflect a similar procedure where candidates are elected depending on their ability and voters are encouraged to understand what they are voting for. The students of Diamond Bar High School partake in two student elections each school year, one for class officers and another for the United Student Body Executive Board. The candidates spend much time and money to hoist colorful posters and iers with catchy slogans while passing out goodies. However, it is hard to nd a candidate who portrays absolute competence and dedication or a voter who possesses a full understanding of what each position entails. While there are those few who display a genuine desire to lead the student body, DBHS current election system allows anyone to run. One should be well-rounded and organized before deciding to take on the responsibility of the managing the entire school. Yet, any student who meets the bare minimum grade point

average, submits a general application, and collects a certain amount of signatures is given the opportunity to run as a valid candidate. As a result, some students who are truly unqualified for the job may enter and win the election, simply because they are popular. Furthermore, the candidates display a lack of effort to prove their qualities during their campaigns, especially during the lunchtime speeches. Most people keep it short rather than taking the time to state specic reasons for wanting the job. Instead, the voters should be provided with a description of the position and some of the candidates campaign promises. Due to this poor system, voters generally base their decision on how well he or she knows the candidate personally or the quality of the posters and giveaways. Most student voters do not consider the nominees work ethic, dedication, or any other characteristics that are needed for one to hold an ofcer position. In fact, a recent poll conducted by The Bulls Eye revealed that most students are not even aware of what the president is responsible for. Regardless, each student is expected to decide on the best nominee to serve the school for a year. The amateur candidates and the ignorant voters fail to uphold their responsibilities in the inadequate election system. If nothing changes, this cycle of misinformation and manipulation will continue.

Pro: The Train That Could

Claire Huang Asst. A&E Editor Recently, the California High-Speed Railroad Authority released a financial plan concerning the budget for the construction of a bullet train system that would establish a direct route from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The cost of the construction for the bullet train system has increased from the original $43 billion to $98.5 billion. As a result, the construction time will be extended for an additional 13 years, thus delaying the projects completion date to 2033. The plan will be put into action once the Legislature and Governor Jerry Brown approve of it in January 2012. Without the increase in budget, California would not be able to deal with the ination rates to successfully carry out the project. The arrangement will not only better California by helping citizens avoid heavy trafc, but it will also create job opportunities and help the environment by reducing carbon emissions. If more money is not invested into the budget for the construction, California is likely to build an additional 2,300 miles of highway, f o u r runways, a n d 11 5 airline gates insteadall for a total of approximately $171 billion. This would amount to twice the budget for the new bullet train plan, proving the CHSRAs arrangement to be the better alternative, even with the $55 billion increase. The use of the train system would also help

The use of the train system would also help the state gain more money and attract private capital.

Con: The Train That Cant

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor The California High-Speed Rail Authority is requesting permission to ofcially start an ambitious railway project, which will launch the construction of a high-speed bullet train in California. However, a newlyrevised plan revealed the hefty expansion on the funding that California would need in order to make this bullet train a reality. The plan, which would double the original budget to $98 billion, is simply ludicrous, especially at a time when California lacks the money for such an uneconomical cause. Instead of increasing the already-sufficient budget in developing a bullet train that only a relatively small portion of Californians will be able to use, tax dollars should be allocated towards more pragmatic causes. The fact of the matter is that California is bankrupt, and there is no extra money for frivolous spending. Residents of California should not be forced to foot a bill that would only exacerbate their dire nancial situation. Recent s u r v e y s have shown that most Californians will only ride the train for less than 100 miles a n n u a l l y. Considering the high ticket prices, it is more than likely that the majority of the riders will be of the higher class who can afford such a luxury. Those in struggling nancial situations will still have to pay for the construction of the train, but will be unable to enjoy it.

the state gain more money and attract private capital, as more than $1 billion worth of revenue surplus from passengers tickets is expected to be generated a n n u a l l y. Without the extra money put towards the bullet train system, it would be difficult to cover the costs of construction. The bullet train would present many advantages for California. Californias population is estimated to increase from 38 million to 60 million over the course of the next 50 years. With this dramatic increase, the new plan would help alleviate trafc congestion citizens are forced to deal with daily. The bullet train

would also help the environment tremendously. Nearly 12.7 million barrels of oil would be saved annually, which would decrease environmental threats while reducing carbon emissions by more than three million tons. Furthermore, the construction would greatly benefit the job market: during the rst ve years, 100,000 jobs will be available and an additional one million jobs, such as train maintenance, are predicted to be generated afterwards. The CHSRA has proposed an economically realistic plan that comes with many advantages. With more money and time being put into the project, the train system will continue to improve California. Voters need to support this bill so that more job opportunities can be provided, pollution of the environment can be decreased, and the increasing population of California can begin to benet.

The plan, which would double the original budget to $98 billion, is simply ludicrous.

The new train will not only harm California nancially, but it will also damage the environment. The CSHRA has not yet released a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, a report containing information about the risks that the transit system would impose upon the environment. With the dramatic rise of global warming in recent years, the state cannot afford to have our environment damaged by something unnecessary. Moreover, the proposed opening year for the train is 2033, at the very earliest. Because of the current recession, the cost of

materials and labor may sound temptingly cheap, however, by 2033, the cost will have dramatically increased. California can only afford projects that are immediately cost-effective, so waiting nearly two decades for transit-related developments is out of the question. Rather than making revenue, it is likely that California will fall into even bigger debt caused by the minimum 22year construction time that the project requires. Although this is a time of advanced technology, the bullet train system cannot yet be implemented. There is not enough money or resources available in order to develop such an untimely plan. The CSHRA should wait until the economic situation in California is better and should focus its attention on making the project more time-efficient and costeffective.

Sugar and Spice Nice Make Everything

Tis the season to be hungry? Christmas time is near and whether or not you celebrate, its familiar atmosphere is already here. To kick off the holiday season, I decided to fill my kitchen with the irresistibly delicious aroma of homemade sweets. But before I was able to plan out what I wanted to make, I realized that I would have to learn how to bake. In order to resolve this conflict, I quickly got on my computer and searched online for a recipe that sounded easy yet scrumptious. I reminded myself that I wanted a recipe that would encompass fun holiday flavors yet still be suitable enough to be classified as a simple dessert. Whenever I think about the holidays, there is no doubt that the warm avors of apple and cinnamon come to mind. So in order to satisfy my holiday craving, I chose a recipe for apple cinnamon buttermilk cake. At first, it did not sound very much like a holiday treat to me, but when I actually executed the recipe, the cake was delectable and brought memories of the holiday season. I geared up for work and dug out all the ingredients I would need. However, seeing as I am not kitchen savvy, a lot of my tools and ingredients had to be borrowed from friends and family. Once I had all the materials set, I was ready to work. With a mixer, creating the cake mix was no chore at all and I was done in about 20 minutes. Once I nished decorating the mix with apples, cinnamon

But did you know that Santas go to school? No, not the Santa from the sweet childhood tales, but the men in red suits and articial beards for whom children wait at malls during the holiday season. Today, as technology and society advance rapidly, even fake Santa Clauses are learning to upgrade their careers by attending Santa Schools. The Santa School was initially founded by Santa Victor Nevada, a former full-time Santa Claus in Canada. Believing that being a Santa was more than simply putting on a costume, Nevada initiated a class training Santas to become more skilled and procient in their job. The Santa School courses are three days long and are held once a year in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, at the edge of the Rocky Mountains. Throughout the intensive weekend-long classes, student Santas learn the fundamentals of being a Santa Claus from Nevadas, All About Being Santa instruction manual, as well as receive agent services and free custom-made outts. Large companies including Amazon and eBay have attempted to create their own online retailer stores with little success. These sellers take designer labels and put them on sale in separate boutiques, but few of them have been successful. This is because part of the allure of small boutiques is the feeling of exclusivity that comes with the fact that boutiques are not as popular as regular stores. In addition, the clothing that larger companies put on sale are not unique or one-of-a-kind. They can easily be bought at a department store or shopping mall. Pro: The Tim Tebow Train

Austin Kong A&E Editor In the 2011-2012 National Football League season, there have been unprecedented feats in the quarterback positions in the leagues various teams. Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals was traded to the Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings wasted millions on former Washington Redskins quarterback Donavan McNabb, and the Indianapolis Colts lost Peyton Manning to injury. However, the change that had the biggest impact on a team was the replacement of Kyle Orton with Tim Tebow as the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Prior to 2010, the Broncos were plagued with countless years of wasted drafts picks and horrible coaching, and just as fans started to believe that they wasted another pick on a young quarterback from Florida State University, Tebow proved that their choice in the 2010 draft was one of the franchises greatest ever. The Broncos went into the season with new head coach John Fox who decided to stick with Orton, whose win percentage was lower than 50%, as their starting quarterback. The team went on to win only one out of their rst four games of the season and fans began to question the offensive direction of the team. Finally, Fox waived Orton and replaced him with their second string quarterback, Tebow. Since the decision, the Broncos won ve out of their next six games. the Detroit Lions, the Broncos could not manage to pull a win, but they went on to win ve consecutive games under the leadership of Tebow, putting them back in the hunt for the American Football Conference West title. Critics condemn his unconventional style of play because of his lack of throwing ability but fail to notice his passer rating of 102.6 and 149.3 against the San Diego Chargers and Minnesota Vikings respectively. However, he still has his running ability even when his pass game becomes limited. In the game against the Chargers, Tebow ran the ball for 22 attempts and gained 67 yards for the Broncos. A quarterback has not ran that many attempts since 1950. People criticize Tebow for his unconventional style of playing the quarterback position. Despite this, Tebow continues to rack up points and generate wins for the Broncos. Whatever the case, one thing is for certain: Its Tebow Time in Denver Colorado.

Tebow ran the ball for 22 attempts and gained 67 yards for the Broncos. A QB has not ran that many attempts since 1950.

Con: Tebow Trainwreck

running the ball makes him an inefcient quarterback. Tebows supporters may argue that he runs for an average of 5.8 yards per carry, but the reality is that Tebow is forced to run the ball because he has no passing game. He is nothing more than a gloried runningback. Considered the three best quarterbacks in the league, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers are completing 65.8%, 70.2%, 71.8% of their passes respectively compared to the 45.5% of Tebow. Each of them have also thrown for approximately 3000 more yards this season alone. Tebow will never be an elite quarterback in the NFL if he does not develop a passing game.

apart from other quarterbacks is his running ability. Tebow has ran the ball 78 times while gaining a ridiculous 455 yards, making his average yards per carry more than the teams starting running back. There is no doubt that Tebows athletic addition to the Bronco offense has made a substantial impact on the teams effectiveness in generating wins. In his rst start of the season, Tebow played against the Miami Dolphins. With only ve minutes left in the game and the Broncos trailing 15-0, Tebow rallied the offense and managed to pull off spectacular comeback win with a eld goal in overtime. In his next game against

Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor With the National Football League playoffs quickly approaching, there has been a substantial amount of debate regarding the line-ups of Super Bowl contending teams. Among these controversial teams are the Denver Broncos which has garnered a 7-5 record after its victory over the Minnesota Vikings on December 4. The Broncos four game winningstreak has been credited to starting quarterback Tim Tebow who has a 6-1 record as a starter this year. However, the media has misled the fans into believing that Tebow is the reason for its newfound success. Tebow drastically lacks the most signicant skill in a quarterbacks arsenal, passing ability. This combined with his natural propensity for

Tebow will never be an elite quarterback in the NFL if he does not develop a passing game.

Despite playing limited minutes his rookie season, Tebow has failed to show improvement in his passing game since being inserted into the starting lineup. In addition to his throwing ability, Tebow also lacks in several more areas of his game. He does not have the clutchness of Brady, the leadership of Brees, or the eld vision of Rodgers. Tebow must learn to adapt and add to his game to repeat their success in the NFL. The Broncos have been playing very well as of late, but Tebow should not be given all of the credit. The majority should be given to the defense and the coaching staff, most notably the new head coach

John Fox. Once the team found the right line-up it was only a matter of execution and team chemistry. The only reason why the Broncos are 5-1 with Tebow starting is because they have been giving up 8 less points per game since then. The Broncos played tough defense in the fourth quarter against the Miami Dolphins on October 23 when they came back from 15 down with only ve minutes left in regulation. Even more notable is the fact that they have given up only one touchdown in the fourth quarter in the past six games. The identity of the Broncos is not its quarterback but its tight defense. Tebow has the potential to be a star in the NFL if he works on the passing aspects of his game. However, as of now he is nothing more than a secondstring quarterback who needs to stop tebowing and start passing.
