After months of inaction, the California legislature finally passed a new budget for the state last Thursday. The budget cuts $8.6 billion from spending on public education. Adeel Mohammadi Asst. Editorial Editor Lawmakers and educators alike are worrying about the poor condition of the states education budget, which is largely unable to meet education costs. School districts across the state were forced to make cuts and prepare for the worst before the budget was passed; now schools fear that the new budget will not make things better. The state deficit has resulted in California being unable to pay its bills, meaning that California servicessocial, administrative, and educationalare being put on hold. California is currently dealing with a projected $42 billion budget gap, forcing the state to take various emergency measuresincluding the issuing of IOUs instead of tax refunds to residents. But perhaps most alarming are the cuts which schools across the state will soon be seeing. To reduce the state deficit, the budget endorsed by Schwarzenegger will cut $8.6 billion from public schools. This will result in a spending freeze in many districts, translating into a reduction of supplies, increased conservation efforts, potential class size increases, and staff [Please see MONEY on page 3]

Apollo Night to be CAAP Hosts 17th Annual African Held this Friday American Cultural Faire
TALENT: Tickets will be sold at the door for $8 per person. The night will consist of about 20 acts as well as an opening slideshow presentation. A comedy act will follow. Desiree Wang Asst. Feature Editor Diamond Bar High Schools Black Student Union will host its annual Apollo Night in the school theater on Friday, February 27, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Apollo Night is an annual talent show that showcases both single and group acts. A percentage of Apollo Nights ticket sale profits will go toward the non-profit organization, Mosaic Peace, which focuses on providing relief for people in Darfur and Uganda. The theme, Mosaic Peace, was chosen by the officers after compiling a number of non-profit organizations to choose from. We chose the organization [,Mosaic Peace,] because we feel that whats going on in Darfur is a really important issue that has only been slightly addressed in this school. [This issue] needs to be broadcasted to the whole school, stated senior and BSU President, Uche Uweh, referring to the genocide in Darfur. Instead of a D-day, we hope to make it a D-year [through Apollo Night], commented sophomore and BSU Treasurer Ifeoma Kpaduwa, in regards to the D-day hosted by USB. In order to help promote BSUs cause of providing aid to people suffering in Darfur and Uganda, the theater will be decorated with posters covered in a mosaic style to describe the non-profit organization. An opening slide show presentation will precede the talent show and will inform the audience about Mosaic Peace and its cause. We want people to know where their money is going and how it will make a difference, stated junior and BSU Vice President Oluchi Okwandu. We want people to have a cultural experience and to know that BSU isnt just African Americans. Anyone can join and support us, said Uweh. Performances of all different cultures and styles will be showcased. Around 30 people tried out and about 20 acts were chosen by the BSU officers and advisors, Jill Santana and Mini Bhalla. The acts range from three to five minutes. A comedy act will introduce the talent show. We want people to be entertained and to learn about all different cultures through this night, but even more than that, we want people to leave informed about the [Please see SHOW on page 2] CULTURE: A variety of dances, from traditonal dancing to modern hip-hop, were performed. Justo Lamas Performs Sixth Concert at DBHS Theater

SING: DBHS students Kyla McCarrel and Mike He prepared a song to sing with Lamas. Attendees also participated in a tongue-twister and singing contest on stage. Pamela Lewes Contributing Staff Writer Diamond Bar High Schools Spanish Club hosted its 6th Justo Lamas Concert on Friday, February 6, from 7 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. in the Diamond Bar High School Theater. Justo Lamas is a singer from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lamas has visited over 1,000 schools and is considered, by many, to be one of the most influential Latinos among North American youth. The Justo Lamas Concert is a fun, educational experience for our students. Students learn more about Hispanic culture through his songs, said Spanish Club Advisor Christine Buccola. They always [have] a great time when Justo [performs] concerts at DBHS, added Buccola. A multimedia presentation on a projector introduced Lamas. The songs Lamas sang included Technocumbia, Siempre Por Siempre, Tu Amor, Amor Real, and Baila Conmigo. Lamas interacted with attendees, inviting volunteers to sing and dance for the audience with him on stage. I liked dancing on stage and in my seat. He [was] a great dancer [and the concert was] very educational, stated senior Jamie Parke. Lamas held a tongue-twister and singing contest on stage. Members of the DBHS Dance

Plasma screen televisions are quickly replacing standard televisions across the nation; the popularity of the VCR has decreased rapidly since the advent of the DVD player, and none of these advancements have required the prodding and the enforcement of a federal mandate. The 2005 Congressional decree for a national conversion from analog television to digital is unwarranted and serves no purpose. Congress decided to ban public analog broadcasts in 2005 and auction off the frequencies to private communication companies, leaving certain analog frequencies for the use of emergency services only. Yet considering that a main argument for the mandatory switch is that digital provides speed and clarity, reserving the lower quality analog service for public safety seems to be an illconceived attempt by Congress to justify their decree. With Congress stepping in to make this change, one would think that most Americans are prepared to step into the digital future. But while only 11% of national households still use analog television, 11% translates into 13.5 million households who have to deal with the added nancial burden. There are four ways to switch to digital television: subscribing to cable service, installing a satellite dish, purchasing a digital television, or obtaining a digital converter box; all of these options are costly, ranging anywhere from $50 to over $200. In these economically unstable times, the federal government is asking too much of these paltry 13.5 million families. Some funds have been allocated to relieve the nancial strain, but the $1.5 billion worth of converter box coupons have fallen short of their purpose. Congress has promised another $700 million for voucher distribution, but with the coming Stimulus Package and an increasing national budget decit, the digital conversion program may hurt more than it will help. Technological progress can be madeand has been madewithout the government dragging the process along. The American addiction to convenience dictates that if a luxury is affordable, people will gravitate toward it very willingly. The government should do more to advertise the benets of digital television and the faults of analog broadcasting rather than force its decision on the masses.

United States Holdem

Katie Lee Editorial Cartoonist Newly seated Attorney General, Eric Holder brings fresh enthusiasm to an American Justice Department deated by scandal and corruption. Holder has a reputation for political transparency and judicial impartiality, in contrast to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who resigned under corruption charges in 2007 and was responsible for leading his department beyond the limits of constitutionality. Holder will bring much-needed credibility and accountability to the Justice Department and restore the faith in the ofce. Holder has assured the people that he is capable of being effective in his position. A Columbia Law School graduate and a former federal prosecutor, Holder has served in the Public Integrity Section of the Justice Departments Criminal division. He has earned the reputation of being an aggressive deputy with unique qualications that render him capable of making the necessary changes. He will repair the damage that Gonzales has caused to the integrity of the Justice Department. The recent exploits of the Justice Department and the subsequent deterioration of condence in this federal branch demand the presence of a reputable leader. Under Bush, Gonzales and his successor Michael Mukasey respectively perpetrated the crossing of Constitutional barriers. Holder, on the other hand, has consistently proven himself to be a devoted upholder of Constitutional law by honestly regulating all of the Departments litigating and administrative components in both civil and criminal matters. Unlike the dishonorably removed Gonzales, Holder has proved himself to be a dedicated civil servant. During Gonzales term, controversies arose around the proliferation of unwarranted wiretapping of conversations between Americans and suspected terrorists. The Patriot Act gave intelligence agencies the power to investigate the telephone, e-mail, and nancial records of any American resident, with or without cause. Bushs approval of the measure and Gonzales unwavering support for suspending civil rights were acts of blatant disregard for the Constitution. In another instance of illicit behavior, Gonzales replaced liberal U.S. District Attorneys with employees loyal to the Bush administration and the Republican Party. Gonzales would have purged even more, but public outcry discouraged this spineless crony from furthering his agenda. These dismissals of U.S. Attorneys were without any cause other than preference and bias. These shady dealings further exemplify just how much a beacon of light is needed to purify the Justice Department. Holder parallels Obama in his desire for progress and his dedication to government responsibility. In contrast to Gonzales, Holder comes with promises to repair the tainted reputation left by the Bush Justice Department The change from Gonzales questionable policies to Holders more benevolent ones is welcome. Holders service in the Public Integrity Section provided him with the experience and drive to oversee and pursue justice for allegations of misconduct of government ofcials and judges. Hence, Holder comes with a bonus of being able to clean up Gonzales mess while performing the daily rigors as the U.S. Attorney General and modeling the adherence to his principles. Moreover, this essential change is a prelude of what will come in Obamas new era of federal accountability. By appointing Holder as the new Attorney General, Obama made the right choice, and Holder is sure to reinforce order after the chaos left by Gonzales.

Breaking the Ice

Sharon Lin Asst. Editorial Editor After the collapse of three major banks in Iceland, its citizens became anxious for change and began searching for stability. They sought a change similar to the type that Americans were so desperately seeking just a few months back. America found Barack Obama, and on February 1, Iceland found Johanna Sigurdardottir. She was elected prime minister of Iceland, making her the rst openly gay head of state in the world and the rst female prime minister of Iceland. But without the failing economy of their nat i o n s , neither Obama nor Sigurdardottir stood a chance at winning such powerful public ofces. F o r months now, thous a n d s of Icelanders have protested against the Icelandic government with pots and kitchen utensils in what some call the Saucepan Revolution. Angry and confused, Icelanders became aware of the desperate need to assemble a new government that could bring about much needed change. Seeing the failure and eventual resignation of the entire government body, Icelanders realized that neither gender nor sexual orientation are as vital in a leader as being equipped to pull the nation out of disaster. Had it not been for the dire need to x the government and the economy, voters would have fallen back upon their biases and their reluctance for change and they would not have elected Sigurdardottir. But as the economy sank even lower, Sigurdardottirs popularity heightened to new levels. Her reputation as the only politician who truly cared about the average Icelander and her genuine desire to turn things around have won her the unprejudiced support of the entire nation. America had faced a similar situation a year ago when John McCain was a popular choice for president up until he revealed his passivity and ignorance toward the economic meltdown. Many Americans respected his conservative values, but with stocks plummeting and major banks closing down under the Republicans, it did not take long for Americans to shift their support to Obama. Many believed that Obamas liberal policies would benet the economy more than McCains conservative views would. His diverse background won him the support of the liberals, but the economic d o w n f a l l won him the support of the conservatives. Had it not been for the sudden economic collapse, many Americans would have continued to elect a traditional candidate such as McCain. However, having a fresh face and fresh ideas in the White House became extraordinarily appealing towards the end of the campaign, and a majority of Americans united behind Obama. The recent economic troubles threw open doors for both Obama and Sigurdardottir who are now symbols of hope in this period of economic unrest. These drastic changes in voting trends are directly tied to the fact that citizens are beginning to understand that business is not personal. They have realized that a good politician is one who has skill and experience. As a result of the economic downfall, citizens worldwide are now disregarding any personal interference and electing the most able and trustworthy candidates based on their professional experiences.

Blazing Trails of Satire

Cheaper By the Octal

Adeel Mohammadi Asst. Editorial Editor The recent birth of octuplets to a Southern Californian single mother has brought out criticism from scores of unpatriotic conservatives who are outraged at what they call the negligence of an obsessive woman who now has fourteen children to raise. Yet these conservatives do not realize the many benets of a high birthrate, and they ought to be tried for treason and promoting anti-American sentiment by advocating a limited population. A nations power is based on its fertility. Countries like China, with its one child per couple policy, are bound to see horrendous drops in their national prestige; the label Made in China has already become synonymous with shoddy products made in a baby-hating, child-poisoning country. Nations with growing populations are guaranteed a large work force and a built-in consumer marketnecessary elements for national economic prosperity. Our current economic mishap can be solved if more women have octuplets in the spirit of Republican motherhood. Anyone who threatens our prolic population by advocating smaller families will still be free, but parents will need to enroll a minimum of three students at a school at any given time. Baby booming might cause overcrowding, but when the United States annexes Iraq and Afghanistan, we will have additional territory to spread to. Countries like India and Mexico, who are proud of their increasing populations, are currently putting Americans to shame America needs to enter the birth race. The synchronized wailing of millions of American babies will keep the public awake at night, but we will be patriotic insomniacs. Furthermore, the diaper industries will experience unseen prosperity, creating enough jobs to solve the current unemployment crisis. Those who consider themselves too young to have children need not despairmothers from the cult of domesticity will need volunteers to change diapers and sing patriotic lullabies. Immigrants will be able to prove their allegiance to this country by giving birth to dozens of children. No one will question the status of an alien who has produced ne American children to feed the American economy. Requirements for naturalization should entail a contribution of at least ve children to our population. Large numbers of Americans will then be available to join the military and defend our country from foreign terrorists who hope to inhibit our countrys human vitality. The key to long-term stability and wealth is a constantly increasing population. Mothers should be encouraged to give birth to as many Americans as possible, to preserve the economic strength of our great nation. Every American is willing to make sacrices of money and sanity to see American babies. God bless you, Nadya Suleman, and every other octo-mom out there.

Facets of Faith and Family Pro: NFL Football Stadium
There are over 4,200 different religions in the world today. This diversity causes conicts between nations, peoples, and even family members. In America, the freedom of speech and thought have given young people the tools to make their own decisions regarding religion, decisions that often conict with the beliefs of parents and siblings. It has become more common for the parents in a household to be conservative while their children, especially teenagers, become more liberal. In other cases, the children have embraced a faith while the parents stand back and wonder what they have done wrong. There is a saying that one cannot stand imperfection in those they love, and this pertains to religion. Even in a nation built upon religious tolerance and acceptance, religious differences can cause strife and bitterness within a family. There is quite a number of devout teenagers and equally irreligious parents, despite the stereotypical assumption that teenagers are wild and rebellious. At Diamond Bar High School, many students have come across these issues with their own families. While there has always existed a generational gap between parent and child, it is interesting to see how different people are, even though they are so close. Here are a few examples of religious variations within a household and the effects they have on the family: My dad and I are atheists and my mom believes in Buddhism. She tries to spread her teachings to me but I kind of just fall back from it, because its not really for me, its for her. [Sometimes], she tries to put it in everyday life. When she talks too much about it, my dad gets kind of mad at her because he doesnt really believe in it and thinks its all useless. She got better; she kind of withdrew from [telling us about] it, because she can see how it affects us. Freshman Amy Tan Im a Christian and I go to church every Sunday, but my parents are somewhat Christians [that] dont go to church. They believe in God, but they dont do anything to improve [their faith]. I tell them to go, but they just dont go to church. Ive even given churches to them to go [to]. It doesnt cause any ghts or anything, but just disagreements. Sophomore Avy Zheng Both of my parents grew up in nonreligious households and decided to become Catholic to get married in a church [...] I went to Saturday Catholic School until I was seven and basically believed blindly [...] I dont think I truly started to question things until I was maybe 11 or 12. It didnt really start making sense to me, in my opinion, so I would start asking my parents questions [...] My dad said that [I] was born catholic, and [I] didnt have a choice. [Conicts] usually happen during dinner [...] Im not atheist, agnostic, or anything. Senior Sharon Galvan Andrew John Asst. Sports Editor Voters in the City of Industry recently approved a bond measure that would provide $150 million for improvements to city infrastructure to make way for a proposed football stadium. The stadium is expected to bring a National Football League team to the Los Angeles area. The arrival of the 600-acre football stadium and the presence of the resulting NFL team in Los Angeles would only be to the surrounding areas advantage. Not only would Los Angeles nally have a recognized sports franchise for football, the area around the stadium could benet immensely from increased business sales, job availability, and better street conditions. Of course, there is no denying that the surrounding area will have to adjust. The arrival of a football stadium means the arrival of more people and an increase in trafc. Luckily, that is where the state government steps in. The infrastructure bond measure that City of Industry residents approved includes selling bonds to build streets and adding different types of utility connections, such as sewers. These new roads and improvements will only make the lives of the residents around the stadium easier. Next comes the issue of disturbance. Residents in the city of Walnut worry about this the most since they will be relatively close to the stadium. In fact, Walnut residents are still protesting against the stadium and the noise and light pollution that would be produced. Again, that is where the government, along with the NFL Board of Directors, intervenes. If an NFL team were to use that stadium as their home eld, the Walnut residents would see games being played in that stadium around nine times at most out of the entire year, including eight home games in the regular season and a possible postseason game. For all the people unfamiliar with football, the games take only a few hours on a Sunday. The minor inconvenience caused by the stadium will be outweighed by the city improvements and additional revenue for city businesses. The games will be a small nuisance that will result in an overall gain for the area. The city of Anaheim has the Angel Stadium of the Anaheim Angels and the Honda Center of the Anaheim Ducks. Even with two major stadiums, the city is doing just ne. The city has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, and the average daily trafc volume in most parts of the city is around 30,000 vehicles, which is comparable with some of the local freeways in the Walnut area. If Anaheim can manage well with two stadiums, then surely the Walnut area can adjust with just one. People need to get past anxieties about the stadium and see all the benets it has in store. To get to the stadium, people will have to pass by neighboring Walnut and Diamond Bar, where businesses will prosper from the increase in customers. For example, since stadium food can get a bit expensive, spectators could go to nearby food eateries, before or after, which would mean an increase in business. In addition to the areas already existing jobs, many more job opportunities would be made available by the stadium. The government addressed the concerns of the people, and the improved business revenue is a bonus that comes with the stadium. Improved street conditions will help the residents, and a rise in business is sure to come. There is no extreme downside to the stadium, and with all the positives outweighing the small hassles of the stadium, there should be nothing standing in the way of the stadiums construction. All there is to do now is to wait for the actual stadium to be built.

Con: NFL Football Stadium

Desiree Wang Asst. Feature Editor Los Angeles County is currently considering the possibility of constructing a National Football League stadium on the border of the cities Walnut and Diamond Bar. The idea of such large-scale construction should not be entertainedan NFL stadium will propel its surrounding cities into a downward spiral of increasing crime rates, traffic congestion, commercialization, and industrialization. The grand scale commercial center will inevitably take a negative toll on the family-based, suburban city of Diamond Bar; it must not be built. The approximately $800 million stadium, which is to be located just south of Valley Boulevard with main accesses from the 57 and 60 freeways and Grand Avenue, will be technically located in the city of Walnut and not Diamond Bar. Despite the rhetoric of advocates of the stadium, Diamond Bar will reap no tax benets if it is built. Diamond Bar will instead reap the rewards of becoming an industrialized, high trafc area, with congested streets and increased noise pollution. Both Diamond Bar and Walnut are considered bedroom communitiessuburban communities consisting mainly of commuters. Such a cumbersome stadium of over three million square feet will undoubtedly lead to an increase of the amount of trafc, making the commute difcult. Public disturbances such as vandalism and other illegal activity will soon be ubiquitous. It is no wonder the only cities supporting the possible construction of the Walnut NFL stadium are beyond a twenty minute radius from the stadium itselffar enough from the three million square feet of chaos to avoid being disrupted by the large scale stadium which would include four practice elds, a number of restaurants and stores, and an NFL training facility. In contrast to Diamond Bar and Walnut residents, the residents of the supporting cities will neither hear nor see the stadium unless they visit for their own pleasure. As avid sports fans and eager shoppers ock to the arena and shopping centers, they will pack Grand Avenue, worsening the already problematic trafc issues of Diamond Bar. In addition to the thunderous cacophony of sound which will be heard around the packed stadium during a game, residents of Diamond Bar and Walnut need only imagine what will occur in the city after intoxicated, furious fans of the losing team attempt to leave the crammed stadium. Billionaire land developer Ed Roski Jr., head of Majestic Realty, is the mastermind behind this horrendous proposal. Roski, who developed the Staples Center in Los Angeles, hopes to create the same successful impact on the surrounding cities of Diamond Bar and Walnut just as he has on Los Angeles. However, Majestic Realty will actually utterly destroy the peaceful suburban lifestyle of both Diamond Bar and Walnut, drastically transforming the two bedroom communities into industrialized cities with increasing crime rates. Statistics have shown that after the construction of the Staples Center, crimes rates and robberies increased dramatically in LA as a result of a largely commercialized sports center. Diamond Bar s essence of tranquility and peace will be entirely destroyed with the construction of a large scale entertainment center and stadium. Not only will the quality of life worsen, but the affect on schools and children will likewise be negative. Criminal activity will also indubitably increase with the establishment of an NFL stadium, marking the beginning of our citys rapid and imminent decline. If Diamond Bar residents wish to maintain a high standard of living and quality of life, they must not allow the construction of the stadium.

Dealing With It
Christine Song Contributing Staff Writer President Barack Obama recently succeeded in pushing his $787 billion stimulus package through Congress, a measure expected to ease Americas increasingly dismal economic outlook. The economy is in such a dire situation that many have compared the situation with the Great Depression of the 1930s, casting Barack Obama in the role of then president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. However, the causes of todays crisis and their solutions are radically different from those of seventysix years ago. The comparison between Obama and Roosevelt is unwarranted, and his economic plans will need to extend further than those of Roosevelt in order to bring about lasting, positive effects. Roosevelt designed a plan that pulled the nation out of crisis but failed to safeguard our economy from future failures. His New Deal was not designed to offer long-term solutions and only stabalized the economy. Roosevelts homeownership plan Fannie Mae and his social security programs have since backfired on the nation. The economic landscape of the nation has changed as well, with the decreasing clout of big business and agriculture, both of which were major factors in the success of Roosevelts New Deal. Also, World War II and the war-industry complex were a major component to the success of Roosevelts economic recovery program. Obama cannot rely upon any of these conditions and must rather overhaul the American economy green jobs with new services that promote energy efciency and environmentally friendly technological improvement. Obama is aspiring to make public buildings more eco-friendly by replacing old and expensive heating systems and light bulbs go beyond Roosevelts stopgap programs, most of which were dismantled once the crisis was averted. Not only does Obama plan to connect our schools, libraries, and hospitals together, but he also plans to connect the nation by updating all our roads and bridges, a measure that will facilitate transportation for businesses. This will also create millions of new jobs, making up for the millions that have been lost thus far in the economic crisis. Many economists have since argued that Roosevelts policies elongated the term of the Great Depression by seven years, saying that Roosevelt did not cure the ailing nation: he only assuaged the pain. Now it is Obamas responsibility to cure the nation of its sickness. Obamas plan must not include the mistakes that Roosevelt overlooked; his plan must exceed those of FDR because todays problems exceed those of the 1930s. The new New Deal that Obama has introduced must stretch further than its namesake. It pumps more money into the economy and has the potential to make lasting alterations to an American economy that has been slowing down for several years now. The plan that Obama has introduced to our nation has no place for failure and must succeed.

Are You Smarter Than A DBHS STUDENT?

Elizabeth Lee Contributing Staff Writer You may know all about the Big Bang Theory and the Industrial Revolution, but how well do you know common knowledge? When youre studying your AP text books for tomorrows test, you never pause to think about the basic things. When you hear someone say that they dont support womens suffrage because they think it means women suffering, you laugh with everyone else. You laugh even though you most likely would have answered the same way. After forming a list of 13 common knowledge questions, I went around school for a few days and put some students to the test. Though I expected the responses to be mildly funny, I didnt expect many of the answers to be clueless and completely unrelated to the question. It surprised me that my peers answered some of the questions with such uneducated responses. Unfortunately, I also responded to some of the questions the same way. Out of the 13 questions that I compiled, I could only answer ve of them without using Google. Here are some of the responses that I got. Genesis Keller Asst. Eliza Pan Feature Editor Many people talk about changing the world (or at least I hope so), but thats all it istalk. Were all hypocrites because all we do is stand around and complain, complain, complain. But among us masses of donkeys, there are those who stand up and actually do something. The Yes Men are the revolutionaries of our timemodern day Susan B. Anthonys and Rosa Parks. Yes, the Yes Men sound like a juvenile fan club of that Jim Carrey movie, but this unique activist group does more for this world than many of us ever will. Once, they caused a company to lose $2 billion in 20 minutes! Dow Chemical, a major company, caused the worlds worst industrial disaster, releasing toxic gas in Bhopal, India that killed thousands and left thousands more requiring medical care. However, Dow Chemical never took responsibility for the catastrophe and what is now known as the Bhopal Disaster was never brought into the proper light. To educate people about the disaster and to spur Dow Chemical to take responsibility, Andy Bichlbaum, co-founder of the Yes Men, appeared on BBC World in 2004 under an alias to announce that Dow Chemical would take responsibility for the disaster by providing $12 billion in funds to compensate victims and clean up the site. Within 20 minutes, Dow Chemical stock plunged, causing the company to lose $2 billion. The real Dow Chemical printed a retraction, stating rmly that they would not clean up the site nor would they give Bhopal residents any sort of compensation. News spread. The retraction became the top story on Google

news. Dow Chemical gained a reputation of irresponsibility and cruelty. Mission accomplished. Still not impressed? In 2007, the Yes Men disguised themselves and argued at Canadas largest oil conference that because of our deteriorating resources, the only way to create energy is todrumroll pleaseconvert people into oil. Yes, thats right. We should take dead people and convert them into oil for our energy needs. But the most outrageous part is this: Nobody at the conference stood up to say anything until a video played about a ctional janitor named Reggie who was converted into candles after he died. Do you not see the genius of the Yes Men? They satirize business executives and corporations that only care about money by exposing the outrageousness of it all and how ridiculous it is that the corporations actions are accepted. All right, if you are still not impressed, take a look at what I consider to be one of their most ingenious hijinks. This past November, the Yes Men, with the Anti-Advertising Agency (a group battling the insane number of ads today), published a special edition of the New York Times, with headlines such as Iraq War Ends, United Nations Unanimously Passes Weapon Ban, All Public Universities to be Free, and one of my personal favorites, Congress Returns Civics to High School Curriculum. It is too awesome for words. You have to see it to understand its beautiful magnicence. The purpose of the pseudo-newspaper? Come on, you can gure it out. So in conclusion: The Yes Men are awesome. We are not. But we can be. Be inspired by the Yes Men. Care, and then, most importantly, do.

Be Your Own Spy

Tiffanie Cheng Contributing Staff Writer Horrible at telling if someone is lying to you? So am I. But little do we know, being able to decipher the difference between a truth and a lie is all in the face. In a world full of deception and crooked business, we often place an extreme amount of trust in people that probably lie to us all the time. Being able to tell if someone is lying to you is easy if you just read facial expressions and listen to tone of voice. Use the following tips to see through a casual, white lie or even a cheating boyfriend. Careful though, with some added practice, you just might become an expert liar. Peculiar expressions or awkward movements often follow a huge lie, and the timing of the expressions is often a little off. For example, if you hear the words I love you and you see a confused expression, it might be hard to put credibility to the statement. Check for the complete use of the facial muscles for a real smile; the trick is usually in the eyes! Eyes are thought to express 99% of the emotion youre feeling so if you doubt the sincerity of a statement, study the eyes for a icker of deception. A polite (but fake) smile utilizes the barest essentials of your muscles: the curve of the mouth. However, if the eyes form a crows feet, a slight squint of the eyes, and a majority of the cheek and jaw muscles are involved, then youve got a genuine smile; youre in business! Liars, at least bad ones, tend to put objects in between them and the subject they are lying to, ranging from a newspaper to a cup of coffee, and they tend to focus their attention on the object rather than you. Liars also sometimes mumble incoherently when confronted with an accusation. Some liars choose to repeat entire questions and emphasize the negative part, or simply avoid the question by not completely answering it. They also frequently stretch out their responses. For example, they would say, No, I did not take your money instead of a plain No. But be careful! Dont let your personal bias fool you into misreading a lie; sometimes you just hear what you want to hear. Warning! Not all tips are 100% accurate. Being a good lie detector has its perks. Wouldnt you like to be able to distinguish a lie through body language? Perhaps this will add to your sense of self-assurance. If you play your cards right youll be able to accurately distinguish a lie from the truth. Practice observing people and polygraphs will no longer be neccessary. Soon you just might be able to interpret things on your own.

you take it all in, you realize that everything comes together to add to the shops character. The atmosphere is relaxed and makes you feel right at home. So, grab a cup of coffee, get a good book, and read through the entire afternoon. Whether youre at McClains with friends or by yourself, the shop is sure to provide you with comfort and warmth. It isnt your average Starbucks; the shop has character and history

Take off your coats and kick up your feet because youre headed for a uniquely bohemian styled boutique. McClains is a mom and pop, house-turnedcoffee-shop, that is one of a few that are open until midnight. You can nd this rare boutique on 817 N. Harbor Blvd in Fullerton. The place itself is cozy and features easy going music that reaches every corner of the shop. While visiting McClains, make sure to use the place where the toilet resides and the bathtub too. While answering natures call, do ponder where you actually are; a restroom or a bathroom? The zany dcor is composed of random paintings, mismatched furniture, and a series of literature strewn near the entrance. The seating area is borderline tacky with its angular velvet furniture and strangely discolored ceilings, but when

behind it, a history of long and faithful food service available to all. McClains makes you believe that you are in a European coffee shop. The coffee house even includes live entertainment from amateur bands a few times each month. Look up the schedule at www.myspace.com/ mcclain before you stop by! McClains sells not only coffees and espressos, but also a variety of foods. Whether youre in the mood for a mufn

or a Chinese chicken salad, you wont have to empty your wallet because food at the shop will cost $10 at most. The food is decent, the coffee is good (even for non-coffee lovers like me), and the service is adequate. If youre worried about parking, dont be. Although McClains is located on a busy street, private parking can be found behind the shop. But just a warning, the front door is quite tricky. Make sure to use those muscles of yours to push the door hard enough or youll end up like me, looking like a fool wondering if youre locked out. I recommend McClains to anyone whos looking to get away from the reality we call life. Come on by to this one-ofa-kind hang-out and enjoy the craziness of all that it isthe paintings, the beverages, the food, and the people! McClains is the perfect place to kick back, relax, and watch the world go by.

James An Asst. Photo Editor 2009 has nally started to roll into spring, meaning new clothes, new styles, and new fashion! In the past, androgyny was a theme largely used in womens fashion; however, mens fashion is now quite androgynous itself. Guys are dressing chic with slim pants and low cut shirts, looking clean-cut yet carefree. They are even accessorizing in an androgynous fashion. Guys are denitely showing both masculine and feminine qualities through style. Tired of your clothes? Sometimes, a DBHS hoodie, skinny jeans, and a pair of Vans may not be quite enough. A leather jacket will add something more interesting to your outfit. These can be great with a tie under it, but they can also be worn casually with a pair of jeans. Be careful when buying one because most leather jackets are quite expensive; look for a pleasant bargain that will save you some money. If leather isnt really your thing, then try blazers. Blazers can also be worn when dressing in different styles. Slim and dark blazers can be worn casually with just a pair of jeans and a plain shirt. They are easy to wear and look very clean-cut. They are typically easier to match as long as they are not bright and oversized. Also, high tops are making a comeback and look great with slim pants. However, keep your shoes as clean as possible no more sloppy looking shoes please. Creative Recreations just released its new Spring 2009 high top sneakers. Public Royalty also released a collection of high top sneakers that vary in both color and style. Both of these high top brands carry stylish yet very affordable products. However you choose to dress, be sure to keep your style neat and be comfortable in what you wear.

Hip-hop is a culture, an art, and a language--not just a musical genre. How it is dened is up to each individual. Through hip-hop, artists can express intelligent opinions through meaningful rhymes and beats. Their words ow in smooth succession to convey an idea or address an issue. Nowadays, however, many people consider hip-hop to be dead. The supposed hip-hop songs one nds in the media usually do not have the thought and self-expression that hip-hop songs had orginally. People who understand real hip-hop are usually disappointed with what it has turned into. The only place where true hip-hop is likely to have survived is the underground industry. Unlike their mainstream counterparts, underground MCs have meaning in their lyrics. One is likely to nd that underground artists do not usually rap about supercial things, like money and cars; they talk about more signicant matters in the world. Underground hip-hop sticks to the true elements of hip-hop, not conforming to the impractical views of the quixotic public. Many artists choose to stay underground because they want to stay authentic. Although genuine hiphop still lives, most people

are oblivious to its presence underground. Because most producers of the underground industry are independent, the non-commercialized artists are not always known or recognized, even though they have been around for awhile. Some examples of veteran groups are A Tribe Called Quest and Hieroglyphics, both of whom have been out for over a decade yet have received much less attention than newer mainstream rappers. Other artists that are at the top of the underground hip-hop hierarchy, yet unknown to many, include Gangstarr, C.L. Smooth, and People Under the Stairs. Some underground artists, however, have received high deference by venturing out into the public. Although they might have entered the world of the presumably supercial rappers, they did not do so in order to conform to it. Instead, they remained true to their roots and continued to produce meaningful songs. Artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Wu-Tang Clan all still use the underground elements of true hip hop in their music. Although it may not receive the recognition it deserves, true hip-hop still lives underground. Its music does not deal entirely with fame, blingage, or sexualitythe public can hear more meaningful selfexpression. We just need to look a little bit harder.

Both bands will be headlining at Uplands Wire Music and Art Venue on Friday, March 7. Although three of the JBuilding seniors are about to head off for the next chapter in their lives, the members promise to make time for music in the future while pursuing practical majors in college. Eric Lee Staff Writer Everyday, people make mistakes and incorrect decisions; usually the mistakes are harmless, but sometimes the damage done is irreversible. The Academy Awards are representative of both the human error and perfection. T h e A c a d e m y Aw a r d s , otherwise known as the Oscars, are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence in the lm industry in elds that include directing, acting, and writing. The Academy maintains a voting membership of nearly 6,000, many of whom are actors. Despite the large amount of voters and strict policies, throughout the years, there have been many controversial decisions over movies that received Oscars when many felt that the award should have gone to other lms. Such controversies include the Best Picture decisions from the years 1968, 1997, and 1998. In the year 1968, the Best Picture Winner was Oliver! by John Woolf, but the majority of movie critics argue that 2001: A Space Odyssey denitely should have been the winner because it set the standard for a new age of science ction movies as it was very ahead of its time, much like the book 1984 by George Orwell. Secondly, in the year 1997, Titanic received the Academy Award for Best Picture. Most people nod their head in agreement until they realize one of the other nominees was Good Will Hunting. Based on its popularity, Titanic should have won hands down, but the Oscars should examine the quality of the movie, not the number of the tickets that the movie sold. In the year 1998, Shakespeare in Love was the Best Picture winner, but many movie critics believe that Saving Private Ryan should have

won the award for being the best depicted war movie of the century with its gripping plot and excellent portrayal of World War II. However, these movies are still more acknowledged than those who received the awards. On the other hand, there are several movies that have been righteously awarded such as A Beautiful Mind, and The Departed. A Beautiful Mind, the year 2002 winner for the Best Picture, truly deserved the Oscar. The movie is about math genius John Forbes Nash, played by Russell Crowe, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and painfully endures delusional episodes. Although it has been criticized for falsely portraying some aspects of Nashs true life, it was wellreceived by critics. In 2006, The Departed won the Academy Award for the Best Picture of the Year. The Departed is actually a remake of Infernal Affairs, a 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller which is about two agents. In The Departed Matt Damon plays the role of a maa member working for the Massachusetts police department and Leonardo Dicaprio as an undercover cop working for the mafia. The gripping plot revolves around these two men attempting to gure each others true identity. Films such as A Beautiful Mind and The Departed truly deserve to be recipients of the Academy Awards for outstanding portrayal of characters. Given some of the movies listed above, one may realize how some films were picked when they shouldnt have while other movies wellpicked by the AMPAS voters. However, an Oscar does not make a movie better than the ones that didnt receive the award. Movie-goers should judge movies based on their personal preferences, regardless of whether or not they won awards.

home-based consoles started to grow in popularity and utility. Nowadays, with home entertainment expanding at a rapid pace, arcades have changed. When arcades were rst budding, they were normally full of pinball machines and other dexterous games, but now such games are usually only found in childrens arcades. The biggest difference between arcades now and arcades back then is all the coin-operated video games. They used to be frowned upon, then they were popular, and now theyve panned out to a relatively small and shrinking group of gamers. However, depending on where you go, youll see different types of arcades; places like Disneyland feature more classic, non-video games like Ski-ball and basketball challenges, whereas arcades near colleges and in plazas feature more competitive and often foreign based games. T h e t i m e s , they are achangin, or so Bob Dylan said. No, thats not just a quote from Anchorman; its an actual song. No where is it changing more than in the world of UCLA football. Things are nally looking up for a once proud football program that was recently down in the dumps. Second year head coach Rick Neuheisel turned things around for the Bruins, and the team will soon be considered a threat. Although the Bruins only nished 4-8 last year , Neuheisel was still able to secure a very strong recruiting class, which ranked 7th in the nation according to www.scout.coms rankings. Key signees this season include athletic quarterback Richard Brehaut (ESPN #7 QB), Xavier Sua-Filo (ESPN #3 offensive tackle), and Morrell Presley (consensus #1 tight end). Presley, however, did not originally plan to go to UCLA. He was verbally committed to cross-town rival USC before he changed his mind and joined the Bruins. Presley wasnt the only USC recruit that UCLA took. USC also attempted to sign Sua-Filo and Randall Carroll (ESPN #5 wide receiver). Last year, the biggest problem for the Bruins was their offensive line, which was hit hard by injuries, forcing them to start several freshmen who, as it became obvious, were not quite ready. Now, with a year of experience under their belt, they will play a lot better, and skilled incoming freshmen will ght hard to get playing time over the upperclassmen. The best freshman linemen the Bruins have are Sua-Filo, and 66 340 lb. guard Stanley Hasiak. One thing that UCLA did that was very smart was to work hard at signing players that other Pacic Ten Conference schools were recruiting. Brehaut was considering Pac-10 schools Arizona, Oregon State, and Washington State, and Hasiak was committed to California. With all the players UCLA has stolen from other schools, they only lost one player, 3-star defensive end Billy Sanders. No matter how good the players are, no team can be succesful without a good coaching staff, and UCLA has one of the best coaching staffs in the country. One such coach is former USC and Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Chow is a quarterback genius, coaching such star players as Alex Smith, Matt Leinart, and Carson Palmer, two of whom have won the Heisman Trophy for best college football player in America. Chow was named Pac-10 recruiter of the year by www.rivals.com, thanks to his personal signings of SuaFilo, Hasiak, and many more. Although the loss of defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker to New Mexico State University hurts the Bruins, former linebackers coach and Chicago Bears defensive assistant Chuck Bullough will be able to ll the spot nicely. They may not be as good as USC yet, but who knows? Maybe in a few years things will be different.

A cloud of shame and deceit has been hovering over the heads of many nervous, overpaid athletes for some time now as their images have fallen into darkness one by one. A vast list of sports legends, such as sluggers Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds and even cyclist Floyd Landis, have had their once treasured names inscribed upon this hall of shame. Is there hope for change in such a sinful era of sports? On February 9, one brave man decided that his name would not be put on this list without an asterisk, which will read, Admitted to taking anabolic steroids. Alex Rodriguez, one of the stars of the Bronx, admitted in an interview on national television that he used performance-enhancing drugs. Despite a previous interview with renown news anchor Katie Couric during which he denied using drugs, A-Rod decided that he would not go down the path of other legends when he decided to end the madness and come clean. He is the rst superstar to put his legacy on the line. So are we to reward him, or punish him like the other frauds? To look the camera in the eye and admit his wrongdoing to the world takes some guts. Whether this confession was a mere act to save his precious career, or to nally, as he called it, Getting the monkey off my back, A-Rod must face punishment for his wrongdoing. However, we live in a society where mercy is greatly unpredictable. The league should allow A-Rod to complete his career, but not be inducted into the hall of fame. Even with his confession, the most important event is still to come. The Supreme Courts ruling must favor Rodriguez because they must encourage other athletes to come clean as well. However, if they rule against him, even with his confession, then the chaos and anarchy surrounding steroids will live on forever. A whole different door for athletes willing to confess can be opened, but it relies solely on the decision of the court to keep the door open and not slam it in the athletes faces. So was it a smart decision for the decorated all-star to come clean? Of course it was, but he cannot expect everything to go back to normal and have everyone completely forget about this asco. Rodriguez must learn to play with the imminent hatred and ridicule that he will undoubtedly receive from fans across the country. What is different about A-Rod is the fact that he owned up to his mistake, unlike other athletes, such as slugger Barry Bonds who is still called hurtful names wherever he goes. ARod will be welcomed back in New York because, according to A-Rod, fans in New York appreciate a faithful confession.
