Amanda Knox Released from Italy and Returns Back Home

Critical pieces of evidence that were the basis for Knoxs conviction in 2009 were discarded in the final appeal verdict because they may have been contaminated. Holly Liu Asst. News Editor 24-year-old American, Amanda Knox, was finally released on Monday, October 3, after being jailed in Italy for nearly four years. Knox has returned back to her home in Seattle, Washington on Tuesday, October 4. Knox was attending school in Italy when she was arrested along with her exboyfriend, Raffaelle Sollecito in November of 2007. They both were accused of taking part in the murdering of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, who was at the time, Knoxs roommate. Italian police officers were said to have coerced and treated Knox badly in order to have her admit to things that many believed she was not responsible for. Though she pleaded innocent, she was still convicted in December 2009 and was sentenced to 26 years in prison. Knoxs guilty sentence was mainly based off Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid evidence that many experts considered weak. The evidence, discovered 46 [Please see LIBERTY on page 3]

Pantera parents, teachers and staff, alumni families, and students from Leo Club will volunteer to handle the different booths and stations around the campus. The principal, Todd Riffell, sought to celebrate the schools 10 years of educational excellence by hosting a carnival and to show appreciation to all the families, staff members, teachers, PUSD, Diamond Bar City Council and other members of the community who supported Pantera Elementary School in its pursuit of academic excellence, said Lim.

onto their next dance. This year homecoming sounds pretty unique. Its at a place that Ive never heard of but I think it is going to be fun, said junior Henry Kang. Additional events and activities will also be displayed during the Homecoming football game on Friday, October 28 including the announcement of the Homecoming Queen and Princesses. The club and class displays and halftime show will all correspond with the dances theme Take Flight. Well the venue is at an airplane hangar...so the theme "Take Flight" is kind of going along with the airplane thing... Dont miss the half time show. It'll be one to remember, commented USB Commissioner of Sports, junior Stephen Lee. Additionally, there will be a class competition for the Homecoming Queen and Princesses floats. Ticket pre-sale ranged from $80 with two activity cards per couple, $85 with one activity card per couple, $90 with no activity card per couple, to $45 dollars for a single ticket. All prices were raised by an additional $5 after pre-sale which ended on Friday, October 14. Were excited for homecoming this year. The venue is at a unique location and it should be a lot of fun and a very special night, shared USB advisor Chelsea Grunseth.

SPIRIT: As the final event before the game, USB organized the Branding Iron Rally to honor the football players and display t h e s c h o o l s s u p p o r t a n d encouragement. Stephanie Cota Asst. Photo Editor The United Student Body coordinated Diamond Bar High Schools Branding Iron Week from Monday, October 17, to Friday, October 21, to get the students ready for the muchawaited Branding Iron Game against Walnut High School. The week consisted of lunchtime activities, a rally on Friday, and many school decorations set up by USB and the class committees. The week was organized by the USB commissioners of athletics juniors Danielle Foley and Stephen Lee.

Branding Iron Week Prepares Students for the Branding Iron Game
I think Branding Iron Week is a great [way] to show what kind of spirit DBHS really has, and just makes the football players more excited for their game on Friday knowing that the school has so much support for them and all the hard work they put in day in and day out! states Lee. Foley and Lee have been preparing for this week since the end of the last school year and all throughout the summer, ordering the various props and decorations needed for the events. The lunchtime activity on Tuesday was the Brahma Boot Camp, an activity that consisted of an obstacle course for the football players to prepare them for the big game. The winner was senior Joshua Tran with the shortest time of 29 seconds. Wednesdays activity was Smash Them Walnuts, a game between the football captains and the Song Leaders. USB rented out a high striker carnival game, placing walnuts on the hitting point, giving each captain one shot and the Song Leaders two. Song won with a total of 420 points while the captains had 400. The activity on Thursday was the traditional Whack-aPony event. The football players were invited to the lower quad to hit the horse-shaped piatas, filled with walnuts and candies, to symbolize the victory they were expecting. As the final event before the game, USB organized the Branding Iron Rally to honor the football players and display the schools support and encouragement. The rally really pumped up the school for the game. The

students energy helped lead our team to victory, commented Foley. It really did what it was meant to do, [which was to] get the school excited for the game. Coach Ryan Maine added to the excitement by introducing a new cheer, I believe that we will win, which was used often at the game and was successful in motivating the football players. I could not have done any of this without Danielle Foley, and of course all of USBs help as well! explained Lee. The football players proved themselves at the game, beating the Walnut Mustangs 26 to 22. Branding Iron Week was a successful prelude to a victorious game. Foley commented, The week was so perfect. I couldnt have asked for anything better.

Peer Counseling Hosts DB Forum in the Gymnasium

TRUTH: At the beginning of the day, attendees were divided up into ten groups. Each group had a peer counseling facilitator, who led the group in discussions and activities throughout the day. Prisca Kim Asst. News Editor Diamond Bar High Schools Peer Counseling held its semiannual DB Forum in the DBHS gymnasium on Monday, October 17, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. I hoped that we could expose the stereotypes of DBHS and open the eyes of our peers [through DB Forum], stated Peer Counseling President senior Christine Kim. At the beginning of the day, attendees were divided up into ten different groups. Each group had its own peer counseling facilitator, who led the group in discussions and activities throughout the day. Each group also had either a staff or faculty member. I [had] high expectations of my advanced peer counselors who were specially selected to facilitate their individual groups. It is a very difficult task to facilitate debriefing questions with ones peers about potentially controversial and challenging issues we all face in our personal lives, as well as on our campus, said advisor Sandra Davis. Games and activities were held to allow attendees to familiarize themselves with stereotypes on campus. After each activity, facilitators led their groups in discussions to debrief. One of the group games was a campus map quest. Every other group was given a large map of the DBHS campus. Students then placed post-it notes labeled with different cliques on the map. The purpose of the activity was to show how many different groups there are on campus and emphasize how students remain in their cliques. There was another activity called If You Knew Me Well during which group members discussed more personal topics about themselves by sharing three personal facts. I really enjoyed being really open and having other people open up in front of me. This was very special to me because it made me realize how strong the students are in our school, commented senior Carlos Silguero. Another issue discussed at DB Forum was bullying. Later in the day, attendees split into

four groups and performed skits about the different groups on campus and the various types of bullying. The main goal of the activity was to satirize the beliefs people have about various cliques. I felt that [the skits] helped us bond as a group and it was really fun. I liked how the skits let us end the day [on] a great note, commented facilitator junior Nathan Chung. Attendees were either nominated by teachers and Grade Level Coordinators or had applied through an application process found in the peer counseling room. The first 100 students who returned their applications were able to attend the forum. The peer counselors who participated in DB Forum were those with at least one year of training. They then applied to facilitate at the event, and were then selected. Peer Counseling prepared for this event through weekly preparation sessions with Davis. From the overwhelming, incredible feedback from staff and students, it appears that DB Forum had had positive impact with individuals wanting to stay connected and involved in making a difference on our campus, shared Davis.

The City of Chino Hills Presents Fall Harvest Day

FUN: There was an admission price of $10 per person. Children three years old and younger were able attend for free. Preregistration for this celebration was required by October 12. Vivian Tang Staff Writer The City of Chino Hills held its seventh annual Fall Harvest Day at the McCoy Equestrian & Recreation Center on Friday, October 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Attendee Ronaldo Parrales, a 23-year resident of Chino Hills commented, The experience has definitely been memorable in a sense that we can spend time with our children and other members of the community. Various activities and games were set up for the children attendees. The activities included food crafts where children created their own scarecrow cookies and acorn donut holes. Other attractions included a balloon artist, face painter, hayride, and photo booth. There was also a fall egg hunt where eggs were scattered all around the recreation center. Children were able to collect the eggs which were filled with small goodies. The festival also included pumpkin carving where children chose their own pumpkin. The pumpkins in the pumpkin patch were all donated. There was an admission price of $10 per person. Children three years old and younger were able attend for days after the murder, which found Sollecito guilty, was Kerchers bra clasp, which had Sollectitos DNA. Sollecitos involvement in the case resulted in the search of his home where a knife was found in Sollecitos house that had Knoxs DNA on the handle as well as Kerchers DNA on the tip. However, the knife was not confirmed to be the murder weapon since the knife could not have created the wounds on Kerchers neck. In addition to the DNA evidence, it was also argued that Knox was behaving inappropriately after the murder of her roommate. Knox was said to be doing cartwheels and splits as she waited to be questioned by the police. She was also said to have been contradicting herself during questioning, which could have been an effect of exhaustion and confusion from what was going on. Knox was also accused of being rather promiscuous, which may have interfered with her chance of getting a fair trial. These pieces of evidence includes food and games booths, where children from ages two through eight can play games and win prizes. Around two to three food booths will also be put up that day. DB4Youth will be in charge of the food booths and the majority of the volunteers from both Leo Clubs from Chaparral Middle School, Diamond Bar High School and other clubs will be in charge of game booths next to the haunted house. Volunteers from the California Scholarship Federation, Key Club and Leo Club will help decorate and work at the Haunted House.

News Bits
In Seattle, a selfproclaimed superhero, Phoenix Jones, ended up getting arrested for four counts of assault. Masked in a black and yellow mask, he was caught assaulting people with pepper spray. He had insisted that he was only trying to stop a street brawl from occurring. However, the police denied evidence of a fight. A man from Franklin, Tennessee was accused of stealing jewelry while he was on a lunch break from his trial for robbery. He was caught on tape pocketing handfuls of diamond bracelets. The store owner caught him leaving the store with a stolen Rolex in his hand, but he returned the watch before leaving the store to hide his loot in a bush outside the court. Jackeline Lopez, a woman who claims to be a psychic, convinced a 12-year-old girl to take her familys jewelry and throw it into a cauldron. Apparently, this was supposed to appease evil spirits and lift a curse that the child believed was targeting her. Lopez was arrested and several pieces of the missing jewelry were recovered in pawn shops. Joseph Wilson was arrested for his 100th time after stealing socks and underwear from a department store. When an officer was trying to calm him down, he jumped into a car and told the driver to take off. However, when the driver refused to drive him, Wilson exited out car and ran away. He was later found behind trash bins near a restaurant. In New Hampshire, a moose was discovered to be stuck in a pool. It took nine firefighters and a policeman to pull the 1800 pound creature out of the pool. The moose was pulled by its antlers and appeared to be unharmed after being dragged out of the pool. Researchers in Siberia claim to have discovered a Siberian Yeti or Snowman. They claim to be 95 percent sure that this creature resides in the Kemerovo region of Siberia. A team of scientists met up in Moscow and headed to remote mountainous areas in search of this fabled creature. Mallies Sports Grill and Bar, a famous U.S. restaurant for creating large hamburgers, created a 338-pound hamburger. They named it the Absolutely Ridiculous Burger for how large the burger is. Despite its fame, no comment has been made on how this monstrous hamburger tastes. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, a vendor selling fruits and vegetables on the street was caught attacking a woman. He was said to have threatened her with a knife and pushed her to the ground because she refused to buy an avocado from him. He was arrested and charged with assault.

However for the 2011 appeal trial, these crucial pieces of evidence were discarded in the final appeal verdict because they may have been contaminated. Many thought that the verdict of 2009 was unfair and unjust. Knoxs family was devastated while Knox believed that she was being cheated out of justice. However, at the announcement of Knoxs release in 2011, Knox and her family were all overjoyed to know that the nightmare they had suffered was over. Kerchers family was conflicted over the final decision, but still reluctantly accepted and trusted the court decision. When Knox returned to the prison to retrieve her personal belongings, she got a warm farewell from many inmates. She was known as a model prisoner because she never argued and tried her best to live her life in prison. Now that Knox has returned, she wants to focus on catching up with her life. In the near future, she plans on going to college to complete her degree in a language major. HAUNT, from page 1 Ive heard lots of good reviews on the event, so I feel really excited and have high expectations for the event, stated Key Club President senior Whitney Tang. Volunteers will help set up for the event starting from Monday, October 24, through Thursday, October 27, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. by painting props and equipment and designing rooms. Im really excited to help out at this event because I like to help people, commented freshman Vivian Yang. She added, with [the] people that are volunteering, [I think] we can get things done, and it seems like a fun activity. About 150 to 175 people attended this festival. Most attendees came with family members and friends. Volunteers from Diamond Bar High School Honor Society were present from 4 until 8 p.m. [This event] was a great experience to have and I had a fun time helping people carve their pumpkins, stated freshman Mandy Yen, an Honor Society member. Recreation Coordinator Lyna Thoeun said, We hoped for a fun, family friendly event [that would welcome] the fall season.

Pro: Healthcare Coverage for Autism

Sarah Cho Asst. A&E Editor Earlier this fall, a House of Representatives bill, H.R 2005, also called Combating Autism Reauthorization Act of 2011, was renewed to support research on autism. However, the renewal of this bill will include an increase in government spending on programs concentrating on the disorder. The bill is necessary to help the victims of the disorder cope with the negative effects of their disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder that typically appears in the rst three years of a childs life and hinders the natural development of the brain. Autism impairs an individuals communication and social skills, and hinders a persons ability to function properly in society. The cause of this disorder is not fully understood and a cure has not yet been found. Additional time and money must be allocated to fund the research projects so that the United States can learn more about autism, a serious condition that many are not aware of. The new law will provide funding for behavior analysis, education, e a r l y detection, intervention, a u t i s m r e l a t e d research, and the Interagency A u t i s m Coordinating Committee. Although H.R. 2005s predicted $75 million cost seems large, in reality, the cost will be divided amongst taxpayers to be less than $1 a citizen. Such a miniscule amount is hardly a burden when dealing with the health of our children. This is crucial due to the drastic rise of youths diagnosed with

When calling the district ofce, the callers are greeted by a light and cheerful voice that says, Thank you for calling Walnut Valley Unied School District, kids rst, everyday! However, when rewarded with $50,000 from the budget, the board members rid themselves of this burden in order to provide all the district board members, principals, and instructional deans of the district with iPads. Although the boards primary motive for the purchase of these devices was to conserve paper and increase work efficiency, WVUSD should have allocated this money towards more appropriate uses. As a result of the ongoing financial crisis America has been trying to recover from, budget cuts were imposed on almost every school leaving barely enough money for students and teachers to complete courses. This bitter reality should encourage the district members to be more responsible with their given budget. Although district funding may not be able to provide support to purchase every student a tablet computer, money could have easily been spent on new textbooks or other instructional materials that the students at Diamond Bar High School are currently in dire need of. Some classes at DBHS have textbooks that are outdated, forcing teachers to handpick valid information

from the schools sorrowfully tattered books. In addition, many classes are not equipped with their own fully-functional television, discouraging teachers to actively utilize visual materials. The board members agreed to ignore this evident deprivation of sufcient instructional materials by conveniently ordering a bulk of iPads worth $500 each for select administrators. The district, however, claims that providing iPads was a necessary decision that greatly beneted its work productivity. WVUSD also asserted that it was among the last districts in its area to provide the iPads to their board members. However, this does not justify the boards misguided decision to neglect the schools lack of updated resources. iPads are not a necessitythey are luxury items that should not have been prioritized so highly. The district has functioned perfectly well for the past decades without iPads and it could have easily continued to do so for many more years to come. The distribution of iPads was an unwise decisionthe students and teachers should and must always be considered rst, yet they were not included as recipients of this budget. The district should begin to make correct choices when dealing with new funding, as an investment in the future of our well-deserving students.

I think its helpful for our administrators to get iPads to help organize their work. Its a new age of technology, lets get on the board with this age. Nikkoli Gelua, Sophomore

I think its a good idea but iPads are not necessary and we should focus on buying materials that the students can use. Galeb Ayoub, Senior

Autism in recent years. The number of children diagnosed with the disorder has had a 273 percent increase in an 11-year period, but even when faced with such chilling statistics, many still claim that this additional funding is unnecessary and excessive. The lack of understanding we have of the disorder makes this bill a necessity. Until recently, autism was not accepted as a developmental disorder. By funding additional money to autistic related programs, the U.S can distribute more information among the public. Such awareness is important due to the difculty in correctly diagnosing the disorder. It is extremely challenging to notice

the symptoms and distinguish them from normal shyness and introversion: qualities many people have as children. Medical experts must learn to recognize the covert disorder and prescribe effective treatment for the disorder. The bill will fund the training and education of doctors and others in the medical eld, thereby improving the current treatments for autism. Autism is a serious condition that our nation is struggling with. The information the U.S has on the disorder is pitifully small due to the lack of attention. America must fight for the disorders victims and face this disorder with new techniques and funding. Citizens should applaud Obama for renewing the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act and demand similar bills in the future. America must make research on autism a prominent feature on its itinerary in the coming years, for doing so will inevitably prove to be benecial for the nation as a whole.

Free Trade FTW

Holly Liu Asst. News Editor The United States Congress passed a free trade agreement with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea after nearly four years of consideration. This trade agreement is aimed towards significantly lowering tariffs, special fees, quotas, and taxes among the three countries while ultimately bettering these foreign relations. Though many argue that the passage of FTA will put many Americans out of business, this agreement will actually be very benecial towards stimulating the American economy, creating new jobs, and improving U.S. international relations. The passing of this agreement is vital to small and medium-sized companies since many of these businesses already trade agricultural goods and products made in the U.S. with Columbia, Panama, and South Korea. By removing obstacles such as tariffs and fees, trading will be made easier for these businesses since more profit can be generated. The FTA is necessary in assisting struggling companies that cannot survive in this weakened economy since making trade easier will allow sales to increase notably. This accord will result in approximately a $13 billion increase in U.S. export of goods. More companies will also be able to start trading processes with these countries since trading will become accessible. This will eventually allow the U.S. to compete with other countries such as Switzerland, a nation known for its successful and liberal mindset in trading. Many argue that approximately 159,000 jobs will be lost after this trading system is implemented. This is because people think that U.S. citizens will buy the affordable imported items, leaving American businesses, which sell similar products, to die out. However, according to the U.S. Chamber

Con: Healthcare Coverage for Autism

Nicole Ongpoy Editorial Cartoonist Barack Obama has made the decision to sign the Combating Autism Act, which would require medical insurance companies to cover kids with autism. State laws already require the government to cover the costs of autism in health care policies, but now the government has made the decision to add in the coverage of the applied behavioral analysis costs. Applied behavioral analysis is a technique autistic kids use to communicate more effectively. Although this law may be benecial to the families suffering from the cost of their childrens medical care, others will suffer from the deprivation of the opportunity for the health care. The more money siphoned off from the health care budget for this new policy, the less money there is for insurance for the elderly. This money is also used to fund regional centers, which are corporations that house people with different disabilities. In total, the amount it takes to raise an autistic child may cost up to about $3.2 million. Every year, one out of ten children in America will be diagnosed with autism. A u t i s t i c children d e s e r v e attention and care, however, we cannot victimize the rest of America in order to fulll their special needs. Regional centers should not have their claim to insurance limited simply because another disorder has higher priority. Although this coverage can impact the

parents with autistic children, the nationwide ramications the new policy poses to our economy must be avoided at all costs. However, this does not mean the problem of autism should be wholly ignored; there are o t h e r alternatives that help alleviate the cost of treatment w i t h o u t drawing on taxpayer m o n e y . Programs such as National Autism Associations Helping Hand Program offer extensive help in covering the cost of autism treatment. The Autism Society of America has 190 chapters nationwide and holds sponsorships with

programs and camps that build events to help autistic people and their families communicate. This concludes that states do not have to resort to taxpayer money in order to solve their nancial problems; there are other programs that offer monetary aid that should be taken advantage of. The public cannot deny nor ignore the fact that many people are at a disadvantage when it comes to covering medical funds. Disagreeing with Obamas decision does not mean that autistic children are not important; it means that autistic children and their families have a myriad of other resources to draw on. Obamas decision to fund the unnecessary support for autism treatment may have been considerate, but he has forgotten the consequences the extra insurance charges may deliver, putting the economy further at stake.

of Commerce, this agreement can save around 380,000 jobs, especially in the export business, since trade activity will increase signicantly. The gross domestic product is expected to increase by more than $15 billion, resulting in the creation of thousands of new jobs in the U.S. Currently, South Korea relies heavily on trade with China, allowing China to maintain a strong control over trade in East Asia, which has become a major concern for America and South Korea alike. Monopolization of trade in Asia could and will negatively affect Americas opportunity to expand its trade internationally. However, the FTA will gradually allow South Korea to become less reliant on China and allow Americas international trading activity to increase exponentially. By signing the agreement with Colombia, a majority of Colombias tariffs on U.S. goods will be removed; in the next 10 years the tariffs should be removed completely. When tariffs are lifted, American companies that trade with Colombia can gain more prot because American products will no longer be taxed. Colombian and Panamanian goods are usually duty-free in the U.S. market; therefore, this agreement will allow these three countries to trade equally. The FTA with Panama will give the U.S. access to a $20.6 billion service market. This opportunity to stimulate the American economy is too crucial to pass up. This FTA is a very effective way to stimulate the U.S. economy, provide new jobs, and improve relationships between the U.S. and other countries. The agreement is efficient in improving the current condition of the U.S. economy and making America more internationally competitive. American citizens, as well as the citizens of the other countries involved, will be able to and should take advantage of the numerous benets provided by the trade agreement.

Media Slants Protest

Ruby Hwang Feature Theme Editor On September 17, people began gathering in Wall Street, New York for Occupy Wall Street, a protest against the elite one percent of Americans who make economic decisions that solely benet themselves. The ongoing protest involves sit-ins by a group of people that identies itself as The 99 Percent. In less than one month, OCW has transitioned from a single New York demonstration to a national phenomenon. The media has contributed largely to the support the movement, but its depiction of the protestors is also responsible for much negative criticism. During a time when the world is connected via the Internet, it is not a surprise that many countries have taken note of the movement through what they have seen on their computer screens. Unfortunately, through the careless representation that it receives through the media, the movement has also garnered many critics. Opposing media has distorted the fundamental purpose of OWS. It is a group of unemployed New Yorkers who are blindly following a cause they do not fully understand. Rather than focusing on the protestors as a whole, media is showing extremists with radical views that have little to do with the core ideas of the 99 percent and exploiting them to give viewers an erroneous idea of what OCW stands for. In this case, the common enemies of all the protestors who have taken part in OCW are assumed

to be Wall Street bankers and the banks such as American International Group, Inc. that Wall Street is tied to. These elitists and corporations have carelessly given out mortgage loans to those who could not afford it playing a large role in the collapse of our economy. Although it is commendable that so many diverse groups of people can have an outlet to get their message across, there is one resounding criticism from conservativebased media sources such as Fox News: the protestors are unorganized and damaging to Americas workforce. Rather than giving the public an idea of the protestors as a whole, news sources have brought light upon extremist individuals and exploited them as a way to bring down OCW. Another unsound criticism that the media, particularly from members of the Tea Party, has been exploiting is the claim that OCW is a civil rebellion. Ironically, the Tea Party is wholly based on a civil rebellion in itself; the Boston Tea Party. Perhaps the true reason why the Tea Party refuses to support OCW is the fact that, despite similar interests, OCW has garnered more support in two months than the Tea Party protests. There is no doubt that the government needs to regulate the giving and spending of national banks and return the power to the people; but, before this can happen, the media needs to provide an accurate portrayal of the movement so that the government can make a legitimate call for action.

This Is It for Conrad Murray

Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor Following the shocking announcement of pop icon Michael Jacksons death on June 25, 2009, an outpouring of grief engulfed the nation. Only two years later, a string of accusations questioning the hidden reason behind Jacksons death swept the newspapers like wildre, creating hostility and blame toward Conrad Murray, a personal physician of Jackson. On September 27, the ofcial trial of Murray for his alleged involuntary manslaughter marked its beginning. The court must understand the level of crime this man has committed, as it is glaringly apparent that Murray is responsible for Jacksons death. On the night of Jacksons death, the famed patient allegedly ordered Murray to put him under deep sedation, specically with the aid of a drug called propofal. Despite the widely-known potency of propofal, which is often utilized for maintenance of anesthesia in a surgical setting, Murray recklessly agreed to Jacksons request by injecting him with a fair dosage. Mere hours later, Jackson slipped into cardiac arrest triggered by acute propofal intoxication and was pronounced dead while hospitalized. The magnitude of Murrays irresponsibility as a personal doctor almost extends to the point of absolute absurdity. As evident through Jacksons drastic reaction to the drug, the usage of propofal is incredibly dangerous and must be administered with extreme caution. It was Murrays duty to meticulously calculate the toll propofal can have on his patients. It has been proven that Jackson was in a frail state at the time of his propofal injection, which exponentially increased his physical vulnerability to the side effects of the medication. In fact, Jacksons feeble condition has been veried through a voice recording of a conversation he shared with Murray only weeks before his death. The audio le explicitly reveals Jacksons inability to speak intelligibly, implying that his speech has become seriously impaired due to his critical health. It does not require a doctors degree to conclude that treating a dangerously weak patient with such a lethal remedy is an act of pure idiocy. Jacksons premature death could have been avoided should his negligent doctor had been more attentive and logical toward his patients bodily state. Murray h a s aggressively denied his charges of committing involuntary manslaughter by highlighting that it was Jackson himself who begged dearly for propofal. Shedding tears, Murray also made an emotional plea in front of the jurors, claiming that he considered Jackson a close friend, and that the loss very much upset him. His apparent attempt to mask his blunder by arousing pity is absolutely sickening, especially with so many concrete evidences that have been presented in court to conrm his misconduct as the killer of Jackson. For example, the courts investigations have exposed that Murray neglected to monitor Jackson with the utmost care in the hours preceding his death. Murrays personal phone records indicate that the doctor spent a great deal of time talking to his girlfriends after he dosed Jackson with propofal. Furthermore, Alberto Alvarez, a bodyguard who was stationed at Jacksons residence at the time of his death, testied that Murray tried to hide vials of propofal before even attempting to dial 9-1-1 for emergency aid. This suggests that Murray immediately comprehended that his administration of propofal was the reason of Jacksons heart failure and urgently attempted to eradicate the evidences that would eventually prove him to be guilty of killing Jackson. It is time the American court system recognizes the true culprit of this tragedy. Murrays failure to carry the most basic duty as a professional and trusted doctor of Jackson is nothing short of deplorable. It was unquestionably Murrays acts of recklessness and indecency that took the life of the worlds most respected and beloved King of Pop.

The magnitude of Murrays irresponsibility as a personal doctor almost extends to the point of absolute absurdity.

An Apple a Day Keeps Competitors Away

Rose Kim Contributing Staff Writer In this day and age, technology has become so scarce that the only company carrying out its duty to the public has been Apple. For some time, Apples competitors have been so wrapped up in providing their customers with new products at affordable prices that they have lost sight of what consumers want: an abundant amount of various similar products with different names at exceedingly high rates. Apple has perfected the art of satisfying the needs of its customers and in doing so, has rightfully achieved the number two spot on Business Weeks Tech 100. Since 1976, Apple has made customer satisfaction the essence of its enterprise. Generating billions in revenue each year means little to the company which only does what it does for the sake of its people. Our current generation has cultivated an unquenchable thirst for technology and most companies are unjustly refusing to satisfy it. For so long, companies in the eld of technology have been caught up with giving the public fresh products at reasonable prices that it takes years to churn out a single item. This blatant disrespect for their customers needs and wants does nothing but alienate their clients. Fortunately, the world has Apple, the one company that honorably carries out its duties by catering to the needs of technologydeprived Earth. Apple defies the conventional quality over arduously to provide them with products that are worth the bricks of cash that they will inevitably spend. Most notably was in 2005, when Apple released their ingenious iPod Shufe. Just several months after this release, Apple sent the public into a frenzy with its most revolutionary

Blazing Trails of Satire

quantity by consistently spewing out hundreds of different models, each slightly better than before. At rst glance, the popularity of such a phenomenon is hard to grasp. However, the logic soon settles in as one realizes that numerous small updates will add up to one big update. Consumers, with all the money in their wallet, do not necessarily require grade-A products. However, there are times when Apple will labor

development: a built-in clip. This new 2006 iPod Shufe: Second Generation was hailed the most wearable iPod ever, the highest honor of its decade. In 2011, Apple generously shaved off a largely noticeable nanometer of width from last years iPad for its new iPad 2. Some will even say that such a grand achievement deserved far more than what was actually asked of customers. Apple is charitably paving

the way for revolutionary technological advances by consistently offering the public devices that barely overshadow their predecessors. This Company of the People knows that one cannot possibly go on living wielding an iPhone4 when the iPhone4S is just around the corner. Announced in the June of 2010, the iPhone4 was released, equipped with a ve megapixel camera and webcam ability. The following year, Apple released the iPhone4S, in which the one letter made all the difference. The iPhone4S came fully loaded with a grand eight megapixel camera and the Siri, a voice command program. Though a voice command program is a basic application installed in all phones of all carriers, Apple outshines them all by giving the program something that no other company has dared to do before: a name. Apple is a company notorious for putting its consumers first and going against the orthodox business ideal of putting money first. Earning billions of dollars every year is a triing gain next to complete customer satisfaction. The 98 other companies of Business Weeks Tech 100 would do well to educate themselves on what makes Apple such a success.

The Art of Asking

Xing Yen Quek Asst. Photo Editor Are you curious about how some students asked their dates to Homecoming? Or are you collecting information to prepare for Prom? Whichever one it is, you will surely nd what you are looking for here. We sent one of our members out to collect some info about ways people have been asked to Homecoming and here is what we got! Sophomore Philip Lee gathered his group of friends, including sophomore Allison Thuang, to arrange a grandiose Homecoming asking at the main lunch area. After a week of planning and rehearsals, Philip and his friends prepared a musical ensemble to the song, Secret. During the asking, they were all dressed in suits and dresses. Thinking she was part of the plan, Allison hurried to her assigned position. However, Philip singled her out and asked her to Homecoming. It was a great surprise to everyone, even the people who participated in the asking. The elaborate preparation ended up paying off when she said yes!

Accio Pottermore!
Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor As an avid follower of the Harry Potter series, I realized at one point in my life that some of the worst parts of being a Muggle included my inability to shop for potions at Diagon Alley, indulge my sweet tooth in Bertie Botts Every-Flavour Beans, and of course, attend the wizarding school of Hogwarts. Little did I know that the day would come when I nally get to immerse myself in all these enchanting activities that were once forbidden to anyone of non-magical ancestry. Although virtual, J.K. Rowlings new interactive web site Pottermore lets its users fully experience the spellbinding tale of Harry Potter in a whole new perspective. Readers and supporters of all ages are allowed to actively participate in a variety of magical fun through their very own computers. Pottermore rst introduced its concept on June 23 through Yo u T u b e . S h o r t l y a f t e r, Pottermore announced its launch of the sites beta version and proposed a unique way of summoning its lucky one million beta testersthe Magical I must highlight. As soon as I accessed my new account, I was greeted with an Adobe Flash-operated tableaux of the rst chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. I fervently clicked every nook and cranny of the page, as various objects often yielded pop-ups with details on character backgrounds and trivia facts that were never revealed in the novels. The textual content was actually incredibly rich and fascinating. Before Pottermore, I never knew that Professor McGonagall was a star Quidditch player, or that Mr. Ollivanders rst name was Garrick, and I am sure that all of the Harry Potter fanatics reading this article would nd these facts extremely interesting. My true adventure began when I nally arrived at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry via Hogwarts Express, which I conveniently boarded at Platform 9 3/4. Like every other wizard who has ever attended Hogwarts, I had to undergo the House-selecting ceremony with the Sorting Hat. I actually found it to be a delightfully suspenseful process. However,

Deviating from the stereotype that boys ask girls to Homecoming, Senior Jessica Yam went out of her way to ask her friend and former Diamond Bar High School student, senior Justin Shen. Yams friends seniors Carol Huang, Audrey Tran, and James Sutanto escorted Shen to ve hints in this Homecoming scavenger hunt. Each clue led Shen to a new location, eventually taking him to a park in Chino Hills. Shen found a big cardboard camera waiting for him, and Yam popped out from behind it and asked him to Diamond Bar Highs dance. This creative asking that dees social expectations was a huge success.

Are YOU Brave Enough?

Prisca Kim Asst. News Editor People say that if you enjoy the thrill of getting scared and the feeling of wanting to pee your pants, you should go to Knotts Scary Farm. Every year around Halloween, Knotts Berry Farm transforms its park every night into their infamous Halloween Haunt. There are mazes lled with surprises and monsters, and several rides are altered for a scary effect. I definitely did not expect to be scared at all for this trip. Even though I had heard that it was scary, I did not think it was anything I could not handle. Boy, was I wrong. At rst, I was ne. I was not frightened by anything and I felt confident that the night would be fun and completely laid back. Before I knew it, I was screaming my head off from seeing a monster suddenly appear at my side. My heart was beating so fast I felt like it would pop out of my chest. From then on, I just could not relax. I felt tense and scared with every move I made and started cautiously making each step, looking around myself at all times. The mazes and rides were actually less scary for me than the actual park and the wandering monsters themselves. In each maze, people walked through rooms that were remodeled to resemble a labyrinth and each had a different theme. Inside of each maze were more monsters and creatures dressed up, waiting to scare attendees. There were also realistic props inside that pertained to each mazes theme. Since people walked in a line through the mazes, there was always someone in front of me and behind me, so I denitely felt safer. Even though people continuously popped out from the sides to frighten me, I was not as scared since I knew I would be able to walk away in a matter of seconds. The rides that incorporated the Halloween haunt were thrilling and safe at the same time. There were a few times when I jumped a little, but overall they were not nearly as frightening compared to the rest of Knotts Scary Farm. This trip was really a oneof-a-kind experience. It is not everyday that you walk through a zombie apocalypse. I can still feel the sweat beads on my forehead forming out of fear of turning around to see a monstrous creature trying to torture me. You better come preparedor else.

Quill Challenge. For seven consecutive days, a challenging trivia question related to each Harry Potter novel of the series would be posted online, and those who solved the question would be granted a special early access. I am proud to say that my years of devoted following paid off when I proved my loyalty to the series by successfully answered the first days question. The answer to How many owls are on the Eeylops Owl Emporium sign at the Diagon Alley? was ve. As an ardent hater of spoilers myself, I will not disclose too much information about my personal journey at Pottermore Beta, but there are a few features

much to my dismay, I was sorted into Slytherin, because I am apparently a dark and heartless person. But all was wellat least I was not sorted into Hufepuff. The rest of my journey mostly consisted of typical everyday wizarding activities, such as brewing potions and dueling wizards. The beta version of the web site currently lacks certain features, like background music, but the actual version scheduled to be released at the end of October promises to be nothing short of perfect. Whether you are a wizard or a Muggle, I can condently say that Pottermore will serve as an excellent source of innite Harry Potter knowledge and entertainment.

BLOODY MARY your baby I killed

Angie Zhang Asst. Feature Editor Once upon a time, there was a happy couple. The two lived in a small cottage a little ways from the local village. The husband and wife had a small child, who was about six months old. One day, while her husband was out working, the wife was making an apple pie but had just discovered she was out of apples. Her beloved baby was sound asleep, so she considered leaving for a while to go and buy some apples. Wanting to nish the pie before her husband came home, the wife nally decided to go. The sun had just started to set when the wife returned to her home. The house was deadly quiet. Thinking that something was wrong, she hurried in to check on her baby. She walked into the bedroom and saw an empty bloody cradle, then, she screamed. It was already dark when the husband returned home. He looked and saw that all the lights were off in the house. He cautiously opened the door. Honey? he called, Are you there? Thinking that she must his wife huddled in a corner, covered with blood, whispering a stream of incoherent words. Unable to see the bloody cradle, he urgently asked his wife, Whats wrong, honey? Staring at him with crazed eyes, she whispered, Give back my baby. The husband, confused and frightened by his wifes actions, took a step back. Give back my baby, the wife whispered more loudly. She got up and started towards her husband. I said, GIVE BACK MY BABY! With a high pitched scream, she lunged towards her husband, knife in hand. The next morning, the sun found both the husband and wife dead. In grief, the wife had committed suicide. However, she did not pass on. Her crazed soul was left on Earth and she started possessing mirrors, killing anyone who spoke of her. If you are having a tough time deciding on what you or your pet should be, then you have come to the right place. Here we present just some of the many things that you can do for Halloween. If you are feeling especially festive, you can dress up your beloved pets in spirit of the holiday. Fluffy can celebrate in style with costumes ranging from police ofcers to tacos. There are even costumes of recognizable characters such as Shrek and the Power Rangers. Your pets might not be huge fans of the idea, but you will have tons of cute pictures to show off to your peers and friends! Some people get their Halloween inspiration from popular media. Everyone from politicians to reality stars is up for grabs. Costumes can be as simple as a recognizable hair style to an elaborate cupcake themed costume. Rock a fake, orange tan for a night and be Snooki or wear a totally outrageous outt and impersonate Lady Gaga. I would not recommend raw meat, though. You do not want to smell like a fast food joint. Some anime lovers use the holiday as a way to express their fandom. On this hallowed night you might nd a couple Ichigos, Gokus, and Allen Walkers running around. There are even special colored contacts that draw inspiration from anime such as the recognizable Sharingan from Naruto. And do not be surprised if you see some blue hair as some female cosplayers dress up as Vocaloid Hatsune Miku who recently gained international popularity due to her Toyota commercials.

Kindling the
Fire
Vivian Tang Staff Writer Amazon has been off to a rocky start. Despite being warned by Apple to stop using the Appstore as the official name of the Amazons own Android application marketplace, Amazon has failed to take heed of the caution, which has led to a lawsuit. To recover from these recent failures, Amazon has introduced various new gadgets such as the Amazon Silk Browser, Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, and the Amazon Cloud Drive. Powered by Amazon Web Services, the Amazon Silk Browser successfully takes a split browser approach. This allows it to send information pertaining to the users command to its Cloud server which will do the majority of the complicated work. Then, while the server is working on processing the information, the Web pages will be produced. As a result, the internet browsing speed is greatly accelerated. This advanced technology tries to guess the next move of its user for certain Web pages. The browser is able to do this based on information that has been collected about the users specic behavior and choices on the web. The Amazon Silk Browser may be exceedingly faster than other web browsers, but it falls behind because it is only available on the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet was first introduced in September, but will not ship to customers until the middle of November. Although this Android tablet has a seven inch screen, a dual-core processor, a multitouch display, and a compact weight of 14.6 ounces, it fails to compete with the Apple iPad because its lack of a camera and microphone. Creators of this new tablet hope to attract customers with a consumer friendly price of $199. It has also been leaked that an estimate of 500,000 preorders for the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet are being received daily. If these numbers continue to rise exponentially, the presales of this tablet will surely exceed the sales of the Apples iPad 2 tablet. With the negative situations that Amazon has faced, their new products symbolize the effort they are putting in to try and keep customers satisfied with their products and service. These new technology devices are different and unique. Amazon is looking forward and hoping to use these new technology devices as an incentive to keep its business flowing and their supporters satised.

The MacArthur Fellow Grant is a prestigious award which recognizes people annually for their achievements and creative minds Jeanne Gang received a Bachelor of Science in 1986 from the University of Illinois and a Master of Architecture in 1993 from Harvard University. In 1997, Gang successfully established a firm known as Studio Gang Architects. Studio Gang Architects is seen as a successful firm, honored with being chosen to be one of ve firms to participate in a 2012 exhibit called Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream. Gang also works as a visiting professor at various schools such as the Yale School of Architecture, the Princeton University School of Architecture, and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Also, since 1999, Gang has worked as an adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Gang is known mostly for her innovation and ingenuous use of the materials around her. She focuses on the practicality of objects and their properties. When asked about her famous 82 story tower in Chicago, named the Aqua Tower, Gang explained that she sees concrete as a liquid rather than as a solid object. antagonist, who is neither a monster nor an insane man, but rather a more creative character that sends chills running down the audiences spines. On the other hand, the flicks with the lowest ratings tend to be the recent ones like Zombie Nation or Unearthed, both of which hit box offices in 2004. Ironically enough, as technology advances and the limits of cinematography expand, the quality of our thrillers seems to plummet. The complaint most often heard from critics is that modern horror movies rely too much on the new technology and special effects while completely disregarding the need for a good plot to captivate the audience.

Lea Chang Feature Editor Every year as Halloween rolls around, many eagerly stay up late nights with eyes glued to their televisions as they look for the scariest and bloodiest films available. What these channel surfers in search of an adrenaline rush will nd is that the exceptionally frightening horror movies are generally the older ones. The most popular icks are classics from the 60s and 70s; Psycho, The Exorcist, and Rosemarys Baby are a few with the highest ratings. Critics and general audiences alike have applauded Psycho for director Alfred Hitchcocks atypical

According to them, this is the biggest difference between successful oldies and crash and burn modern lms. For those thrill-seekers, we will see soon enough what upcoming horrors will be like, as Paranormal Activity 3, Resident Evil: Retribution, and Faces in the Crowd will be released later this year and in 2012. Hopefully in these coming years, directors will be able to learn from their peers mistakes and rare accomplishments. The seemingly repetitious and unimaginative movies will come to a halt, and the aforementioned directors may even be able to raise the bar once again to the standard of Hitchcocks renowned thrillers.

Cross Country Gets Over the Hill

Jenna Chay Asst. Business Manager Diamond Bar High Schools varsity cross country team participated in its second league meet on Wednesday, October 12 at Bonelli Park. The girls varsity team placed fourth while the boys varsity team placed fifth of the seven teams in the Hacienda League. Due to the hot and dry weather, the meet started at a later time and also affected the runners overall performance. The course at Bonelli Park was approximately 3 miles long and consisted of grass and dirt with many obstacles such as the bridge and the rough pathways. The runners ran this course twice and paced through an inclined hill. Under the circumstances, as a team, we pulled through, commented junior Kelly Kuo. Kuo, of the girls varisty team, came in 16th place overall and came in first place for DBHS, completing the course with a time of 21:34. NBA Lockout
Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor The National Basketball Association is coming off one of its highest rated seasons in recent years. The underdog Dallas Mavericks left its mark in basketball history as they beat the reigning champions, The Los Angeles Lakers, and the starstudded Miami Heat. However, the season is threatened by the dispute between the owners and players, formally known as the NBA lockout. The NBA lockout is due to a feud over the renegotiation of the collective bargaining agreement. It said that the players and owners share a 57-43 split of the total revenue the NBA makes. However, the owners want significant rollbacks in existing player contracts because 22 of the 30 NBA teams were not turning a profit. The amount lost in the 2010-2011 season was approximately $300 million. As a result, they are pushing for a fairer split of the income and rightfully so. If the majority of the teams are not making a profit, then it is necessary for the players to take a smaller percentage of the revenue. They must look past their salaries and focus on preserving the game they love. The 1980s is considered to be a period of revitalization. The rivalry between Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan saved the NBA from low ratings and viewership. However, when they retired, several fans stopped following the NBA. The league just recently earned back its fan base and is gaining even more notoriety with its influx of superstar players. If a deal is not made and the season is cancelled, all of the progress made will be undone. The players and owners are looking at the situation in terms of black and white when there is a grey area. Both sides have to be willing to negotiate if the NBA season is to be saved. A similar situation occurred in the 1998-1999 NBA season when the league and its players could not agree on a new contract. This caused the NBA season to be shortened to 50 games. In the following months, ratings declined and remained below pre-lockout ratings in the following seasons. History suggests that having a shortened season would set the league back three to five years. Most significantly, a lockout will thin the talent in the league. Due to the current cancellation of the NBA season, players Wilson Chandler, Kenyon Martin, and J.R. Smith have committed to play overseas with or without a 2011-2012 season. Furthermore, the older athletes in the league may have to consider retiring if the lockout continues. Thirty-nine-year-old Jason Kidd stated that he would retire if there was no 2011-2012 NBA season due to his health. Players that have shaped the NBA for the last decade who hope to win a championship cannot afford to waste a year sitting at home. The lockout may be a sad beginning and end to many players. Having no 2011-2012 NBA season would be detrimental to the leagues popularity and talent. It would undo the work of past and current players while infuriating those dedicated to the NBA. The loyal fans of the league should not be punished over a discrepancy between the wealthy players and owners.

Girls Tennis Wins Again

Sarah Cho Asst. A&E Editor The Diamond Bar High School girls varsity tennis team had a very successful week earning two big wins against Diamond Ranch High School and Valencia High School. Both of these games were away at the opposing schools and improved the teams record. The girls defeated Diamond Ranch and Valencia 17-1 and 12-6 respectively with the singles teams and doubles teams performing well. The team beat DRHS in a league match on Tuesday, October 18. The girls tennis team has yet to lose a league game this season with a record of 11-0. The team defeated the Panthers 17-1. The two singles players played well as both junior Christina Georgescu and senior Erica Alcantra bageled their opponents. The number one doubles team, which composes of sophomore Evelyn Wang and junior Melody Chen, played well. The team bageled all three of its games. We played really well. We played strong, said Coach Shavers. The October 19 game continued the teams winning streak. It was the first time the girls had played against the Valencia team which was rumored to be extremely tough. DBHS, however, proved to be much stronger. All of us were very nervous to play them since we heard they were a Division 1 team, but as we played, we learned that theyre just like any other team, said Chen, a co-captain. The number one doubles team of Chen and Wang, bageled once and so did the number one singles player, Georgescu. In addition, Alcantara played strongly and only gave up one point to her opponent finishing with a score of 6-1. The match went by smoothly with little difficulty. There was a minimal amount of dispute between the two teams barring a few minor arguments over some questionable line calls. The Diamond Bar tennis girls, however, managed to overcome this obstacle and defeat Valencia 12-6. The Diamond Bar girls tennis team has consistently been one of the schools strongest sports and has always been a shining point in DBHS female teams. It has an extremely strong record in both the CIF and Hacienda L e a g u e . These two wins against D i a m o n d Ranch and Valencia prove that this years varsity team is no different. Both Coach Shavers and the girls on the team expect to do well in CIF. I think we have a pretty good chance this year, we just have to try our best, said Lee. The next varsity girls tennis team is an away game versus Rowland High School on Thursday, October 27.

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor Senior James McCreary has proved to be adept both on and off the cross-country course. Even as a four-year varsity athlete in both crosscountry and track, McCreary has managed to find a precarious balance between a staggering schedule full of five Advanced Placement courses and hours of conditioning. In addition to his loaded days, McCreary also participates in numerous extra-curricular activities, many in which he holds leadership positions. McCreary actually did not start his athletic career with running, but with soccer. During this time, he discovered that he had an incredible amount of endurance. Soon after, McCreary dropped soccer in order to focus solely on running. I have a lot of friends on soccer team who always tell me about hurting their ankle or something. I just cant risk that for my running, said McCreary. In the seventh grade, he took part in the Los Angeles Marathon which consists of 26.2 miles. McCreary cited it as one of his most memorable accomplishments of his running career. Additionally, McCreary recently broke the 1982 school record set by senior Chris Shrum. This impressive feat took place at Mt. San Antonio College during the San Gabriel Valley Invitational on Saturday, October 15, where he finished the three-mile course with a time of 15:59. McCrearys impressive schedule boasts a multitude of demanding classes, such as Advanced Placement Calculus II B.C., A.P. Environmental Science, and Spanish IV A.P. Although his courses are undeniably challenging,

he maintains a remarkable unweighted grade point average of 3.9. I dont procrastinate at all and get work done as soon and as efficiently as possible, commented McCreary. McCreary also holds notable leadership positions for a variety of clubs on campus. He is the president of the California Scholarship Federation, secretary of the National Honor Society, and a leader of the Aftershock Christian club. However, McCreary still wants to do more. Even though I have a lot going on, I still want to become more involved in my church. Right now, Im aiming to become more of a leader in my high school ministry, stated McCreary. Furthermore, after six years of participating in Boy Scouts, he has attained the distinguished Eagle Scout ranking. Eagle Scout is the highest attainable rank in Boy Scouts requiring a minimum of 21 merit badges, hours of community service, and a wide range of service projects. All of his effort in high school will pay off during his search for a perfect college. As of now, McCreary does not yet know what he wants to major in, but has stated that a great cross country team is imperative to finding his dream college. Instead of complaining about the huge number of tasks that lay before him every day, he embraces all challenges with open arms. Especially in high school, Ive come to believe that hard work really does lead to whatever you put into it. [] You just need to have the heart and work ethic to get your dreams, commented McCreary.

Another League Championship

Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor After going 8-0 in league, the Diamond Bar High School Girls Golf team won its second straight Hacienda League championship. Due to the teams strong play, ve players qualied for the League Individual Finals. The two-day match, which took place at the Diamond Bar Golf Course and at the Montebello Country Club on October 18 and 19 respectively, pitted the top players in the Hacienda League against each other. The Lady Brahmas had another fantastic season going 18-0 overall capping the season off with its seventh straight league championship. They have won 44 straight dual matches and are considered to be among the top ve teams in the entire state. Although only the top three teams can compete for the coveted state championship, Coach Tony McCabe believes that the DBHS girls golf team has the makings to be the best in the state. All players placed in the top ten indicating that the team is made up of extremely talented individuals. Yang was among the top golfers the rst day as she shot a very strong score of 75 strokes. I played alright and since its our home course, I didnt make the same mistakes [as I normally do], expressed Yang. Although her score slightly slipped by seven strokes the second day, she still placed fth out of 25 players. The DBHS girls golf team is consistently one of the most successful teams on campus. It has won the league championship for seven straight years and is among the top teams in the country. The Lady Brahmas will be competing tomorrow at the CIF Team Divisional where they hope to continue their success.

Megan Quiamas Contributing Staff Writer The Diamond Bar High School varsity volleyball team earned another win on Tuesday, October 18 against Diamond Ranch High School. With this victory, they brought their overall record to 17-6 and league record to 7-1. The Lady Brahmas overpowered the Panthers in three straight games to claim the victory. In the rst game, the girls came out strong and condent, winning with a nal score of 25-9. We were really healthy and strong throughout the game, commented senior cocaptain Kathleen Torres. The middles were very involved by getting every block and hitting all the points that we needed too. There was a loss of focus and communication from the rst game compared to the second and third, but the Brahmas retained a slight edge, winning both sets, 25-14 and 25-21 respectively. However, throughout the third game, the Brahmas struggled to take the lead. We won, but we didnt play to our full potential, commented senior co-captain Francesca Essile, We could have won with a larger margin. When the Brahmas rst faced the Panthers this season on Thursday, September 22, the games were not nearly as close. They won each game with the nal scores of 25-6, 25-3, and 25-11 respectively. Compared to the second match, there were less errors and higher hitting percentages. The second

game doesnt even compare to the rst game, it was not a great performance, commented coach Becky Bevans, The rst game was near-perfect, and we had few unforced errors and we played to our full potential. In the second game, we never really found the intensity to get in a rhythm. The team had more errors and we gave a lot of free points. On October 15, the team competed in the Gabrielino Tournament. The team dominated in the tournament defeating ve out of the six opponents they played, which brought their overall record to 17-6. The Brahmas fell short in the Gold Finals Gabrielino Tournament, losing to San Gabriel High School 1-0. We should have won. The game was really close, we only lost by four points. Both teams were aggressive and had a lot of energy, commented Essile. California Interscholastic Federation Preliminaries are two weeks away and the Brahmas are second place in the Hacienda League, behind the undefeated Bonita High School, and fourth in division. The Brahmas have an enormous amount of talent and the ability to be successful in CIF. We have two huge matches coming up on the last week of league against Bonita and Los Altos. We are planning on working hard and creating complicated strategies so we can become co-league champions with Bonita and to go deep into CIF, said Bevans. The team is scheduled for an away game tomorrow against Rowland High School.
