Billy Graham is a hero of mine. Marvalyn and I heard him preach at the Graham School for Evangelism in Cincinnati in 1975. We sat in the first pew of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Billy Graham up close and personal! By all standards, employed to define a hero,.. Nobility Character Courage Achievements Service Billy Graham fits! He is one of the (Great) generation of heroes swiftly passing off the scene. How very unfortunate for all of us. Heroes are in short supply and in great demand. Hence, the summer series (June): June 10: Gideon: From Ordinary to Extraordinary June 17: Elijah: Odds are Not a Problem June 24: Naaman: Seven Dunks in a Dirty River Depending on the interest level, we may add a few more heroes. Jay Beichley is Chapels youth pastor this summer. Siera Richter placed second at the conference golf meet. We wish Barbara Beichley well in her retirement from the college! Jo Svendsen received the UMW Mission Recognition pin May 6 during the worship service for her faithfulness to UMW. Congratulations to Bennett Mann, Austin Groth, Emily Havelka (three events), Mikaella Koster, and Madelyn Newcomb (alternate) on qualifying for the State Track Meet! And to Austin for qualifying for the 110 high hurdles where he got 4th place! Congrats to GMG sophomore Chad Plaehn for qualifying for State Golf. Congratulations to Morgan Burt, GMGs valedictorian, and Austin Groth, salutatorian, and all Chapel youth who have excelled this year! Congratulations to Joel Vint, who received his masters degree in theology April 29! Erica Van Wyk, Otley, has been job shadowing Ron Groth, especially working with the cows; daughter of Wendy (Hamilton) & Curt Van Wyk. Marla Hlas spent part of May in China while working for John Deere. Mike and Cathy Vint visited Ireland recently! The North Central University baseball team, with Jay Beichley and Eli Odle, played in the NCCAA College World Series at Prasco Park in Mason Ohio. Randy and Mark Beichley were spectators for the tournament. Chapel presented Bill & Cindy Ormston with a monetary donation for expenses with their cancers. Here is an update on what will be going on with the youth this summer. First I will tell what activities will be going on. Saturday, May, 26 was the first SNCAL hangout. The address is 2011 C Ave, Gladbrook. The house is one mile north of Union Grove Lake. This will happen every Saturday night this summer, unless I notify people otherwise. All youth, grades 7 and up are welcome to come. In the next couple weeks, the youth are also invited to stay after church for pizza and we will meet in the church basement, date to be announced later. Also on that same Sunday I might be starting to teach the Y.F. Sunday School class. So that is what is coming up as far as activities. I just want to briefly share why I want to do these things. I grew up going to Church and learning about God, and I always wondered why God spoke to people so much in the Bible, but not as much now-adays. I wanted more out of my relationship with God. When I went to North Central University I really committed to my relationship with Jesus and I started to realize that God does speak to us still. I found out how fulfilling it is to have a fully committed relationship with Jesus, and that there was more to being a Christian than I had experienced. Luke 11:33 says "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. So I want to share what I have received, and would not be surprised if a lot of students feel the same way about God that I did in high school. My hope is that I can share what God has done for me to the youth and that they would all have a fulfilling relationship with Jesus. Womens Trip Planned
Chapel UMW invites all women from the church to a day in Traer & Dysart on Thursday, June 28th. We will leave from Chapel at 9:00 am and also pick up ladies in Gladbrook at the United Methodist Church parking lot at 9:10 am. First on the schedule is a coffee break in Traer at Cookie Mom Cookies at 9:30 am. At 10:30 am we will tour the Shaker Gallery in Traer. This is the second largest salt and pepper collection in the world. We will eat lunch at The Special Tea Room in Dysart at 12:00. For those who want to browse, there are several shops in Dysart, Traer and Gladbrook. If you have questions or are interested in attending, please contact Karen Collins or Karen Handorf.

Fellowship Hall Floor

Have you seen our new Fellowship Hall floor? Stop in if you havent, and we think youll be impressed! The goal was for it to be completed for GMGs Baccalaureate May 16, and that was accomplished. Accents in Concrete from Newton did the work, and we thank trustee chair, Leon Lamer, for keeping the project on schedule. To clean, use just plain waterHow easy is that?! Stop in and see it in person!

Mothers Day
Thank you to the Witness Committee for giving all mothers a potted container of violets. Barbara Burt, chair, gave several prizes to women who fit the bill from her descriptions, including her mother, Kathryn Burt, who ended up with several prizes! The recognition was held a few minutes prior to the worship service May 13.

Our Sympathy:
Reverend John W. Christy passed away on April 28, 2012. Service and burial was on May 2 in Davenport. He served Ryan Golden Congregational, Union Community, Manson UCC Congregational, Nashua Little Brown Church in the Vale, Green Mountain UCC and Chapel UMC during his 47 years of ministry. Baccalaureate
Chapel hosted GMGs Baccalaureate on May 16 at 7 pm with 132 people attending. GMG Secretary Ila Jean Boerm and Sue Koster played an organ-piano prelude. Senior Madelyn Newcomb welcomed the guests, we sang a couple of praise songs, and then teacher Ann Jackson asked curriculum-type questions to a few seniors. She asked if the curriculum of Christ has prepared them for their future. Morgan Burt read about The Cleaning Lady, and several girls sang Amazing Grace and then added Austin Groth for Hallelujah. Siera Richter read The Mirror and then passed out small mirrors to the seniors to remind them to find light in dark places. Sierra Winters read the scripture, and Pastor Dean preached on CongratulationsKeep Moving! We will all remember KM! Emily Havelka closed with the benediction. Twenty-two seniors lined up to greet guests who then had bars and drink, which were furnished by the Chapel Volunteers. Thank you to all who helped in any way. June 2012

Ice Cream Social {June 19}

We've had a taste of warm weather and you know what that means - ICE CREAM! Remember, it is Tuesday, JUNE 19, this year. We'd like everyone to wear their purple Chapel Ice Cream Social t-shirts again this year. We had a lot of compliments on them the last two years, and it also lets people know who to ask if they have a question: Go to someone in a purple shirt! Deadline to sign up is this weekend, May 27! There may be some people who have not yet ordered a shirt but would like to. Sue Koster agreed once again to entertain the hungry crowd upstairs. If you have any kind of a talent youd like to share, contact Sue. Because lemon ice cream is our biggest seller, we are again making 20 more gallons of it and ten less of the chocolate. Here is the plan for selling quarts: Chapel people can order up to three quarts of any kind of ice cream per family up to noon the day of the social. They will be set aside in a separate freezer so those who ordered will be assured to get theirs and not be mixed in with others to be sold. There will absolutely be no ice cream sold in the shed. There will be runners inside (by the cashier) who will go to the shed, bring the ice cream to the cashier's desk, and give it to the eating customer. Ice cream will only be sold to those eating supper at Chapel and to those who call in with a food take out order. No ice cream will be sold to anyone who calls in that night for ice cream only. Dan Steen will be at the church the following morning (July 20) at 8:00 a.m. From 8:00-9:00 am Chapel people can call in and order (641-71-7334) or come in and get ice cream from what is left over from the night before. After 9:00 a.m. anyone, including both Chapel and community people, can call and order from the remaining quarts. There should be plenty for everyone but it will give us a better handle on needs.

Love in Action {Team Belize}

we must not love with word or speech, but with truth and action. 1 John 3:18 The Chapel mission team to Belize will meet Sunday, June 10, following worship in the Fellowship Hall. Team members will need to bring $700 toward airfare to this meeting. Dan will have the lesson on culture shock. Eli will lead singing and devotions, and Sonya will have the sign language lesson. Sonya will prepare song sheets, so prior to the June meeting, team members should give Sonya any songs they want included. Tyler, Jay, and Sonya will provide lunch.

Vacation Bible School {June 11-15}

This years Bible School will be held Monday through Friday, June 11-15, 8:30-11:45 am at the Garwin United Methodist Church. The VBS program will be on Sunday, June 17, at 9:00 am at the Garwin UMC. Remember, no Sunday School or church at Chapel on June 17. To register, complete the registration form & return it to the back bulletin board envelope, GMG Elementary or High School, Attn Larae Edens. UMW
Chapel UMW met Thursday evening May 3, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Marcia Wiese welcomed Lori Odle who presented a program entitled Stepping Stones, A Mission Story. She explained her spiritual journey of her decision to go to Ghana and Tanzania. She had several pictures of both locations in her presentation. In closing she handed out stones for us to remember her in her travels this summer. Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order in the absence of president Susan Beichley, and vice president Sue Koster. Eleven members and one guest answered roll call by telling something their mother considered very important. The minutes of the March meeting and spring breakfast were read and approved. Thanks were conveyed from the Caring Center for the monetary donation and from Cindy Ormston for remembering her and Bill these last several weeks. Shirley Svendsen gave the treasurers report and it was placed on file. Marcia Wiese made and Cindy Ormston seconded the motion we pay the expense for the spring breakfast when it is presented. Motion carried. Cindy Ormston presented a project to help the House of Compassion. Myrene Appelgate made and Harriett Fleming seconded the motion to send $100 to the House of Compassion. Motion carried. Karen Collins presented the itinerary for the June trip. We will go on Thursday June 28 to the Cookie Mom and Shaker Gallery in Traer and then on to the Dysart Tea Room for lunch. Kathryn Burt reported she sent six cards and one book. Marcia Wiese gave her Spiritual Growth report. She read scripture from I John chapter 4, God is Love. Prayer requests were received. Kathryn Burt closed with prayer and read a prayer from Dr. Jeremiah. Janice Collins and Marvalyn Kelly served a delicious cake from a table decorated in a May Day theme. Chapel Ladies Cemetery Aid May 9, 2012 Minutes The Ladies Cemetery Aid met Wednesday, May 9, 2012 in the church parlors. President Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order at 1:40 p.m. Phyllis Mann led devotions by reading two poems about mothers and closed with a mothers prayer. Roll call was answered by seven members telling how they like to celebrate their birthday. The minutes of the April meeting were read and approved. There was no correspondence. Shirley Svendsen gave the treasurers report. Her report was accepted and placed on file. Old Business: The cemetery placards that were damaged are being made.

New Business: The avenue of flags will need to be put up for Memorial Day weekend. We need to make sure the trustees help us with the flagpoles. Six cards were sent. Funomics for this month is $.25 if youve planted a garden, and $.50 if you have not. People mentioned for prayer concerns were Gladys Appelgate, Vaugn Kloster, Jim Svendsen, Dick Svendsen, Elaine Plett, Vera Hall, Pastor Dean, and Nancy Peshel. Kathryn Burt entertained us with a Mothers Day word search, and a Bingo game with items belonging to May. Summertime for Jr. Sunday School

All Jr Sunday School children will meet together in the Fellowship Hall starting June 3 and ending August 19. A different teacher will lead the multi-age class each Sunday of the summer: Teachers, feel free to look at the multi-age teaching books that are on the bottom shelf of the bookcase by the copier. Please copy the lesson you will use, write the date in the table of contents, and replace the books. We hope all Jr. Sunday School children will attend summer Sunday School!

Iron Sharpens Iron

Chuck Rosacker, Randy Beichley, Ron Groth and Dan Steen attended the Iron Sharpens Iron mens conference in Cedar Rapids May 5. They each reported on their highlight in church the next day: Like it or not, we are all going to leave a legacyWhat kind of legacy will you leave? Unchanged leads to unchanged. If we want to improve, we MUST change. Men must take active roles in their families. We must satisfy Gods call to better serve God, our families and our community. Promise Keepers
All men are invited to the Promise Keepers Conference in Cedar Falls at the UNIDome on Friday night and Saturday, July 13 and 14. The speakers will focus on what men need to hear, how to achieve their goals, how to be the husband and father they should be, how to be the man God wants us to be, and how to avoid being pushed off track. The total cost to attend both days is only $63, including the conference, transportation to and from Cedar Falls both days, and lunch on Saturday. Bill & I want to thank all of our wonderful church family for all of the prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits since I was diagnosed last June with breast cancer and Bill was diagnosed in November with liver cancer. He is done now with his treatments and mine should be done in August. We know you all will keep the prayers going for us. We also want to thank you all for the donations of money. We can never thank you enough and you will never know how much you all mean to us! We could never find a more thoughtful and caring church family! IMAGINE NO MALARIA
Every 45 seconds a child dies from malaria in Africa. One in five of all childhood deaths in Africa are due to malaria. Malaria traps communities in a downward spiral of poverty, as it disproportionately affects those who cannot afford treatment or have limited access to health care. BUT, it is preventable and curable. The Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church is one of twelve conferences taking on the Imagine No Malaria project. It is the next step forward from Nothing But Nets, which provides treated mosquito nets to subSaharan Africa. Imagine No Malaria goes beyond nets in five ways: Partnering with communities in Africa: empowering African people to be part of the solution. Prevention: using bed nets, access to diagnostic tests and medicine, draining standing water, improving sanitation Treatment: Improving infrastructure (the hundreds of churches, schools, clinics, and hospitals operated by the UM Church in Africa) by making sure the facilities have the equipment and treatment needed. Education: Outreach to those who need it by local people trained to reach their communities. Communications: Upgrading communications equipment and networks with new radio stations, handcrank and solar powered radios to reach larger numbers of people with life-saving information. So what do you do? Are you going to just know that malaria exists and kills 880,000 people per year? Chapel Churchs Administrative Council has committed $500 to be given to the project at Annual Conference during the first weekend in June. God has put on my heart to give an amount equal to taking my family out to eat in a restaurant so that I can be a part of saving lives in Africa. What has God called you to do about malaria? Perhaps its an amount equal to your donuts with coffee or your concessions at the ball game. Whatever it is, listen for God and be willing to act, rather than just know. Donations to Imagine No Malaria may be given to Chapel Church with the word malaria in the designation.
