Loudounspublichighschoolshaveseenadropinonenationalrankingfrom2010tothe2011 schoolyear.Evenso,Loudounspublichighschoolsrankedinthetop9percentnationallyon theWashingtonPostsChallengeIndexasopposedtothetop6percentlastyear.TheChallenge Indexmeasurestheacademicrigorofschoolsnationwide.Thisyear,TheWashingtonPostlisted 1,900schoolsinthecountry. ThethreepointdecreasemayhavebeenduetoschoolssplittingwiththeadditionofTuscarora andWoodgrovehighschools,WaydeByard,LCPSspokesmansaid. Itsalwaysacomplimenttobeonthere.Theremighthavebeenafewwrinklesthisyearbecause wedontknowtalkingtothemiftheycountedalltheAPteststhatwenttoschoolsthatdivided, Byardsaid.Thatmighthaveaffectedtherankingslittlebit. JayMathewsofTheWashingtonPostcameupwiththeideain1998.Theindexusesaformula tocalculatetherankingswhichincludesthenumberofAdvancedPlacement,International BaccalaureateandCambridgeteststakenbystudents.Thatnumberisthendividedbythe numberofgraduatingseniorscreatingtheChallengeIndex.Eachstatisticiscompiledfromthe 20102011schoolyear. Ithinkitsgreat,yearafteryearourschoolsarerepresentedinthatchallengeindex,David Spage,directorofHighSchoolEducationforLCPSsaid.Sometimestheymoveupalittlebit, sometimestheymovedown.Obviously,thathastodowithenrollmentsthatarecontinuingto fluctuatehereinLoudounaswegrowandopennewschools. AccordingtoSpage,eachhighschoolhasanimprovementplantoencouragestudentsto challengethemselvesbytakingcollegereadinessprograms,suchasSATprep,Advanced Placementcourseworkorhonorscoursework. Previously,thelistwaspublishedbyNewsweek,butaccordingtoByard,thePosthadsold Newsweekcreatingtwoseparateliststhatmayusedifferentcriteria. Itsalwaysnice,whatevercriteriapeoplemeasureby,weseemtofallintothetop10percent, whichisgreat,Byardsaid.But,ofcoursestatisticsmeannothingifwedontdeliver.Andwe feelwedodelivertoeverystudent. Belowisthe2012listofallLoudounCountypublichighschoolsthatfellwithin9percentonthe ChallengeIndex,alongwiththeirnationalrank.The2011listisalsoprovidedinparentheses.
