The Imp of Perverse and its opposite: The conscience Every single person in the World, could said

that, by not obvious reason he/she did something that now make him/her feel regretful. Theres people who affirm that they quite know what made them do that regretful thing. They said that they heard a special voice inside their head, that told them to do it, that no matter what it would cost them, they should make it so that they could know, they could feel a new experience. Reading The Imp of perverse, by Edgar Allan Poe, we found that that voice inside their head has a particular name: the Imp of perverse. Poe describes it as the ghost that has so long overawed us... consumed us with eagerness to commence the work, with the anticipation of whose glorious result. It persuades us by delighting us, we imagine, we desire to do it, we fantasize with its result, yet we know we cant and thats what make it more interesting, that we mustnt do it. It impulses us do it right now. And if we postpone it, itll turn out to be more desirable, more delightful. We can do nothing, but do it. Otherwise we feel as dying. We are now confronting a special being that is inside of us, that impulse us to do thing we know we can not do, just for the pleasure of doing something that we must not, yet we are not aware of it. We cant fight it, because we didnt know it exists. We do know about what could be possible its opposite: The conscience. The conscience is that voice inside of us that told us not to do something, merely because we must not do it. That voice restrains us to do something bad, harmful, or that we must not do, because its results wouldnt be good for us and well regret it later. Conscience persuades us to be calm, to think what were doing, to considere whether its consecuences will be regretful. At the end, we give up. We restrain ourselves. We remain calm. We grew up watching t.v. I remember watching once a toon character, with an devil in one shoulder and an angel on the other. Both the devil and the angel were trying to seduce the character, the devil to do something that was bad, and the angel not to do that bad thing. In this image they pictured, the angel

represents the conscience, and the devil represents the imp of perverse. But, are they just as we watch them on the cartoon?. I dont think so. It struggled in my head the idea that what we call conscience, and the imp of perverse are just the result of evolution, of living. What we call conscience its just experience. Its in our genes, as everything we got from our ancestors. Conscience is the most delightful way in which nature teach us the way we should live. It protects us from harm, it preserves us to the futur. On the other hand, the imp of perverse is just the curiosity we had for doing something. We want to experience what others had known. We want to taste the marvelous flavour of experience, no matter what it will cost us to obtain it. And that way is how we acquire conscience. Taking this into account we should just reflect about what is worthier, to have that specific experience or to live a peaceful tomorrow. We got the answer inside of us.
