1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media product developed and challenged forms and conventions of real
media products by using these conventions such as mise-en scene, interview
framing and cinematography. This includes everything that is in the camera during
interviews as well as cutaways that are essential to the purpose of our
documentary. When filming our interviewees we chose to put fashion props in
the background that related to our documentary. For example in the shot below
(image 1) we have a fashion teacher Maria Loney, for her interview we chose to
film in her office, we included her computer, fashion poster and photographs she
had of various things in the background to maximize the fashion aspect of our
documentary. Also for our interviewee the fashion student we chose to have her
in her classroom with the fashion products people had made in the background
again for filling the fashion aspect. Many other conventions of a documentary
were used such as various cutaways, footage, facts and images all of which you
would expect to be shown in a documentary. The conventions used also related
to the voice over.

Our media product is something that is not seen all the time as a documentary so
I believe we are challenging the media as a whole. Our main question throughout
our documentary is also challenging to society “is society affecting the way you
dress” is an open question which can be answered in many different ways and
also opens peoples minds when watching the documentary to a wide variety of
concepts people can feel or be preserved as through the way they dress. As we
only had five minutes to do the first part 1 to our documentary, we had to make
sure we included all nessercary interviews and get the information we wanted
across in this time. This included facts, figures and genetic conventions (Shown in
image 2). We needed to get people to interview that had some relation to the
topic we chose. Each of our interviewees had their own view that gave the
documentary a broader view and made it appeal to all audiences, although we
had a topic that could relate to all different types of social groups and cultures.

Image 2:
At this current time between social groups and the media fashion is a big issue
with the ‘size zero model’ also a lot of bullying in schools and colleges even work
places sometimes involve the fashion element, when we researched into possible
topics this one stood out seen as we couldn’t really find any other documentaries
on it. As a group we thought this was different and not like any other, we had
seen before, therefore this was a challenge to other Medias. Most things on
fashion these days have a negative view but we wanted to show both sides to it.

As this is a documentary for the BBC we worked along the lines of their News
Night analyzing some if their documentaries to give us an idea of what to aim for.
We followed the lines of their documentaries to achieve the best possible, and
make it look professional. This was essential because if someone were to view
this that is a regular viewer of documentaries they would expect to see certain
conventions so it was vital we included these. Therefore if we follow the
necessary guidelines of true documentaries we should be able to obtain a quality
documentary.
