LAKE TAHOE, USA

Rare Gar Wood in the shop for restoration

On the shores of Lake Tahoe, the American mecca for vintage runabouts, a rare, perhaps unique Gar Wood boat is being nursed back to glory. She’s a triple-cockpit, 28ft (8.5m) Flagship Streamliner, built in 1941, just one of two, and perhaps the only survivor left in the world today. Her Classic Boat-reading owner has sent her to Sierra Boats for restoration.

“The Flagship Streamliner was the final pinnacle for Gar.” The bottom was restored over the 2018/19 winter and the yard is now working on the deck. “All the wood is in great shape, and she has the original 300hp Scripps V12. She’s all original.” The next job will be replacing the leather seating in the original, patriotic colour theme of red, white and blue.
