Turn down and enjoy the silence, advises Ruth
Everyone who has ever seen me play knows how much I love to play with lots of energy and enjoy rocking out on stage. This often comes with loud volume, not just from me but all of us on stage. Playing loud can make you feel a certain way and create a special type of energy on stage. Recently, however, I have enjoyed exploring the opposite approach, playing at low volume. I want to see what happens on stage, within and between the audience and performers, if we play very quietly. I actually think both approaches share a very similar energy.
This leads me to the music of my new trio, Skylla, which features three voices and electric bass. I play mostly harmonics on the bass, so it really isn’t loud
