The Med diet is a cuisine and a way of life, not a fad diet promising unrealistic weight loss or health benefits in one week. It‘s plant-based — although it includes meat and fish — with a plant–to–animal food ratio of 4:1 by weight. By comparison, the typical Western diet has a plant–to–animal food ratio of 1:1.

10 KEY PRINCIPLES OF A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

1 Fresh vegetables, especially leafy greens and tomatoes, are consumed in abundance. Teas made from fresh herbs are also common, as is Greek mountain tea (ironwort).

2 Fresh fruit is eaten every day, and nuts, seeds and dried fruit as snacks between meals.

3 Lots of legumes provide a key source of protein.

4 Dairy is eaten in moderation — although fermented dairy foods
