SA’s poor corruption ranking comes as no surprise

FOR opposition parties, it was no surprise that South Africa ranked poorly in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI).
The CPI, known as the leading global indicator of public sector corruption, looked at 180 countries based on perceptions of corruption. For 2020, it also looked at corruption and the impact it had on countries’ ability to manage the Covid-19 pandemic. The CPI used a scale of zero to 100 – where zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.
The results were released on Thursday. South Africa scored 44 and is among the top 20 most corrupt countries in the world.
